I have several in my yard (I'm zone eight). I love them and so do the hummers.  o(:-)

They need full sun and they take a couple of years to really take off once planted. I don't fertilize mine (although it probably wouldn't hurt) but I do make sure they get lots of water when they start to bloom. I find that extends the blooming period for me.

Good luck and I hope you get some nice blooms.

btw, I tried to post yesterday but the computer gremlin was messing with me.

I just had to post that I purchased two trops from Kat that arrived yesterday. Like I told Kat, these are the nicest plants in my pond right now and the nicest lilies that I have ever purchased. Thank you.  :)

I'm finally getting a few leaves that stand above the water now.  :) I was beginning to wonder if that was ever going to happen with the crummy weather we have been having here.

Now my thinking has turn to fertilizing. My questions are, when to I fertilize again and can I use fertilizer spikes?
I put Osmocote in the pot when I planted but from what I read lotus is very heavy feeders and that may not be enough for the growing season.

Sounds like a water skipper to me if the bug does not actually "fly". Does it look like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerridae

I've had plenty of aphids in the past and they do not skim across the water from one pad to another that I have seen, they are slow moving like Frogman says. They only move from pad to pad when I help them with a blast from the hose (which is only a temporary measure  >:( ).

Do you have room for one more ponder here?
I dug a hole and filled it with water 12 years ago and here I am still asking questions today.
I live in southern Ontario Canada about 20 miles west of Niagara Falls.
I was told about this site by one of your members, so here I am

Hi WW and welcome  :) Nice to read you and hope you get to share that beautiful pond of yours!

Chit Chat / Re: One of my completed projects for this year...
« on: May 05, 2011, 12:49:57 PM »
It took many years of buying parts and waiting so I could afford it all, but I finally got my old Plymouth on the road a few weeks ago.  And if you're wondering... yeah, it's fun to drive!

Love the old Mopar. We have a 66 Charger. Those old Mopars had lots of brute muscle under the hoods. Glad you got it all back together and with some nice parts too.  O0

« on: May 04, 2011, 07:46:16 AM »
We have a sawzall and I LOVE it. I don't know how we got by without one. We have the Dewalt but don't use it daily as Greg said he does but we have not had any problems with it and we have owned it for about 4 or 5 years now. My hubby also uses it to cut metal tubing for different projects he has done and it worked perfect with the correct blade. We have the 12 amp corded and it is heavy but it cuts like no tomorrow. I use it for all kinds of things, even used it to limb up trees. We also own some Milwaukee power tools and they are good ones too. Both are now made in China though which made me kinda sad.

Pond Chat / Re: Yerba Mansa = Lizards Tail
« on: May 04, 2011, 07:36:42 AM »
The link that I posted had me totally confused. I searched the lizards tail and it looked different to me when I compared the pics but the wiki said otherwise.
I'm glad to find out that they are two different animals as I wasn't wanting the lizards tail in the spot I had in mind.

Thanks all for clearing this up and the planting pointers along with the aquatic link.

I am trying to figure out how to plant this as it's new for me.

I have read that Yerba Mansa is aka as Lizards Tail. Is that right?
Here is a link to the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerba_mansa

How deep is your soil?

The soil in the tub is 9-10 inches deep.

Pond Chat / Newbie Lotus Questions
« on: April 17, 2011, 11:28:30 AM »
I planted the lotus that I got from tranquility and I have some questions. The last time I tried to grow one it was a complete flop. :swear:

Does this look like the right amount of water above the tuber? The tape measure is sitting on top of the tuber. Should I add more?
You can see the aerials in the pics and the one to the left is very tall, maybe close to a foot. Do I need to keep these aerials underwater or let them go like they are.
We probably will have some cold nights here in the next couple of weeks so I suspect I will have to raise the water level to keep it from freezing at night. Will I need to lower the level again during the day or just leave it till the cold snap passes?

TIA

Theresa

This one I put in for funzies. I will remove the one round rock after I fill the pot.

Say, what's the very low ground cover in the foreground, inbetween the flagstones, in pic #2?

I will have to go pull up the little name stakes cause I can't remember off the top of my head. I have two different types of ground cover I'm trying to get going and one is a creeping tyme that you can't see and I'll get back to you on the other I promise. :^)

The plant you were asking about in pic 2 is Vinca. It spreads very easily and stays nice a green most of they year for me. I love it! And, you can see the creeping tyme in that pic.

Today is Veterans Day here in the US!

I would like to take a moment today to say thank you to all those that took time out of their lives to serve our country, to help keep me and my family safe and bring us the freedom that we all enjoy. This is something that I do not take lightly. :-)

THANK YOU!

Pond Chat / Re: Vacuum question
« on: September 29, 2010, 09:05:58 AM »
Does anybody have any experience with the muck type vacuums that use suction and are hooked to a water hose.     :-\

Sue, do you mean this type of vac? http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=12830
My experience with that type of vac (I had this one) is that they suck  >:(-. Now to be fair, I have well water and not much pressure to the little pond that I had at the time. If you had super good pressure it might work OK and get you by until you could figure out your power situation at your pond. I don't know how deep your pond is but my little pond was about 18 inches and not very big at all. Every time I used this vac I would cuss like a sailor. I couldn't count on it to work correctly. Sometimes it would bless me by doing it's job for a few minutes and most of the time it was stubborn as a mule. The other thing is that you have hoses all over the place to trip on while doing your pond chore. I think I would try to save my sanity and health and figure out a way to get some power out there so you can use your shopvac. Even gettting a heavier extension cord is better than standing out there swearing and scaring the neighbors ;-) Like I said before, if you have super good water pressure you might be fine but the shopvac will save you time and not give you as many gray hairs.

Don't forget to flush out all your water lines, filter and pump before filling your pond if that is the route you go.

How many of you use it on a regular basis and since many claim it has mutiple benefits for fish color and water quaility why do you use it?

I use koi clay Froggie  ::)

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. How heartbreaking it must be and not a good way for a new pond owner to start out. Sounds like drift from the spray or if you had lots of rain/water that could have run off into your pond that could had done it forsure. Not good anyway you look at it.
How many gallons is your pond? Do you have plants in there?
If it were mine, I would pump ALL the water out and flush the pond really good and then refill. I am lucky enough to have a well so it wouldn't be a problem for me at all. There may be something that you could buy that may soak up the pesticide or weed killer. If you decide to pump the pond and then refill, I would only add one fish just to make sure that you got all the nasties out.

Good luck and don't give up!  :)

Oh, and keep a sample (clean and sterilized jar of course) of the pond water for testing incase you end up in a lawsuit over this.

turtlemike, I see a piece of wire that is about 2 feet off the ground in all the pics that Tink posted, is that your fencing?

You do have some nice looking "friends" there and I am surprised that "Spud" is as mellow and loving as he is for a stud. You are so lucky to have such sweet guys (and gals). Those types of horses are truely a pleasure to be around~ for me anyway. You can tell that they have not suffered any harm at your hands . I will stop here as I could talk about this all day ;-)

Nice horses!  o(:-) They look pretty happy there. I have to say that turtlemike lives in a little piece of heaven right there and is one cool dude  8). Flowers and horses, life doesn't get any better than that!

Thanks Tink (and turtlemike)

Technology Talk / Re: Windows 7

I have 7 and LOVE it  O0 O0. I had been using XP and really liked it but needed to upgrade my old out dated computer and I'm not sorry I did. I did have to make sure that all the stuff I had was compatible (via MS website) and did have to get some new software and printer (old one was completely worn out anyhow). It was the easiest switch I've made so far with transferring the old stuff to the new computer via the transfer cable. I would never go back in a million years.
