Because I have bad knees and can't get down on the ground we built ours above ground.  We used the landscape logs (we call them Lincoln Logs) from Home Depot and made them about 2 1/2 feet deep and lined them with liner.  I can work on them easier this way.  Not as nice looking as an in ground pond but you have to do what you have to do with what you have to work with.

Pond Chat / Re: something on back of lily pads, help.

Thanks for the help.  I throw the snails out of the pond when I see them and do take the goo off the back of the pads or just toss the pad.  I am now wondering about the parasites.  I have lost 2 small koi and one large one in the past 3 weeks.  The two small ones has a similar gel on  them in one spot.  I removed it and underneath was a little funny looking place almost like it was becoming an ulcer but not red looking or deep, just on the surface.  On the large koi I found nothing to indicate what might be wrong.  The other fish in the pond became very lathargic.  I did a salting to hopefully get rid of parasites.  It has been four days since salting and they are acting back to normal now.  I hope that was the answer.  I am going to be very diligent now trying to check for the snails and tossing them.  Thanks again for all of you input.

Pond Chat / something on back of lily pads, help.

I have found a jelly like substance on the back of some of the lily pads.  It is clear in color and about the size of a 1 to 1 1/2 long worm.  I can peel it off easily.  Sometimes it is straight and other times curled in a half circle.  Anyone know what it is.  Thanks.

I tried to find in 'search' for the information on using Oxy Clean.  If John Johns is still on this forum would you please tell me about it again.  Thanks.

Yes Karen J I am the cambria koi from the old forum.  I have been popping in for awhile but haven't done any posting.  We built this pond last year and had it running for about 4 months.  It is an above ground pond built with the landscape lumber that looks like Lincoln Logs.  We thought we had it strong enough by using $50 worth of long screws to hold it together, just didn't calculate how much pressure between 900-1000 gallons of water has.  Anyway it started to come apart on one corner so we shut it down for the winter and rebuilt this spring.  It has been going now just long enough to get through the pea soup algae after start up.  We had, I thought, enough plants that everything would be great then the string algae started.  It did the same thing last year too.  We had to shut it down before we knew what to do about the string stuff.  The water is very clear but the sides and the plants have it growing on them.  It choked out the WH and is working on the parrot feathers and the lilys.  Very discouraging.

I am having a terrible time with string algae also.  What is the dosage used for peroxide?  My pond is about 900 gallons.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
