Bummed.  Waking are so terribly expensive.  More expensive and harder to find than koi.  Finally bit the bullet and got more koi.  Not like I have many waterline to protect anymore....

Yep, Bob.  I have been looking.  Rain Garden has them, but such a steep price.  Blackwater Creek has a few, and I have a line on some from Koi to the World, but that is about all I am finding really.  Most folks I am finding that sell them other than RainGarden get them from Blackwater Creek.

Shanna, I am so sorry!  What an absolute bummer.

I am so lucky that our water is not chlorinated as we are on a rural water line.  However, my hubby kept leaving the hose running in the barnyard and woould pump our cistern dry.  Yikes!  I can not count the times he has done this.  I finally got a water timer and have loved it.  I can set it for 15 mins and top off my quarantine pool.  It cost less than $20 and it has been a sheer pleasure to use.  Mine is bright purple (highly visible so I can't lose it!) and is shapped sort of like a barrel.  I think it is by Orbitz.  Wondermous!!

Understood Wayne.

I was just thinking about how much of the USA is just baking right now with record high temps.  Lots of fish are probably ripe for some relief from the heat.  If the tiny droplets would breakup that flat surface and decrease the heat collection in the pond, it might be helpful.  Just a thought...

I remember a gal that used to be on the pond forums.  She was from the NYC area (debbie??).  She was in her pond and slipped on a large rock and broke her ankle.  Her husband was weed-eating around the other side of the gargae and the kids were all in the front yard, so no one could hear her yell for help and she could not get out of the pond by herself with her injury.   :o
I live 13 miles from town and have no neighbors close enough to hear me yell.  For those reasons I never get in the water if I am home alone.... {nono}

Be safe everyone!

Suh-weet.  I wonder if the tiny droplets would help keep the water cooler by preventing some of the heat build up that happens when the surface is very still.  then the light and heat penetrate allll the way into the water.
When I was a kid in Oklahoma, my neighbor had a teeny pond for fishing minnows.  It had a tiny jet sprayer that sprayed across the surface all the time.  I am thinking that is why they did not bake/boil in the OK heat.

I had this same problem when I had to get in my pond to do maintenance.  I even ruptured a disc in my neck trying to avoid a fall.  Then I got some of those water shoes they use at the beach or at the lake for skiing. n They have a really rubbery bottom and boy do they make things better!  end of season good ones can be had for very cheap.

« on: July 25, 2011, 09:06:15 PM »
Thanks TG.  I wanted to get something completely different because the others I am looking at are all traditional red, white, black, etc.  This one reminds me of a metallic pickle!  LOL
One thing I don't understand at all is what the desirable shape is?  Many koi that I see (adults) are shaped almost like a long teardrop and their head is very blunt.  Is the the shape that is considered better conformation?
I have shown rabbits, but will never show a fish, in all likelyhood.  The only person I am pleasing is me, but I would also like to learn....  The koi comes from Blackwater Koi Farm and the seller describes it as a chagoi.

Thanks!!

I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I also know that there are some standards for conformation for koi.  I have not had any koi for a while, but am having a yen.  Is this considered a poor specimen.  Love the metallic scales....a girl's gotta have some bling!  ;D  This is a 6" youngster.

Thanks Guys!

TG - you are right on the nose with that.  Beauty is such a fickle thing to each person. I just like long fins...period!  LOL  I also despise those 'white' goldies that are neither white nor yellow.  They just look dirty.  And that yellow head on a mainly white fish...  blech!

Most of the sarassa pictured are ones I did not choose, though I did pick the one you are indicating.  I also picked the yellow one just beneath the watonai for the color and sheer size.
I was not really happy with any of the shubs she initially showed me, but she has since netted several nice ones.  I love the freckles, like the one that is my avatar.

Tracey - Can't wait to add some of your fish to the pond too!  I did like the red wakin with the nicely spread tail....

Thanks Lawanna.  Her watonai price was $25 and $35 for the 8.5" calico.  The wakin were $20. Shubs are $5.  I thought the prices were very reasonable.  I plan to hold the best looking of them in a seperate area when they spawn, if possible.  If nothing else, they will make pretty baby mutts, with the occasional really nice fish.
I lost every fish in my pond.  It is empty.  There is no way I can afford to go to Steve at Rain Garden to restock at $40-100 per fish.   However, I can place a 2nd smaller order with him for some select ones.

Jeannie, it wasn't free. I paid 35.00 for the pair.
I would probably expect to pay, Jerry.  all of the rescue organizations need support.  I just hate to add to the problem by buying from a pet store....

Thanks so much Kat!  This is exactly the information I am looking for.  It is hard to catch the wakin and watonai in good position so that the full glory of their tail shows, isn't it?  I will email her back and see if I can get some diff choices and looks.

Help.  Does anyone have any thoughts?  Poor quality, decent, good??

Hi HollDoll!  I (virtually) toured your garden tonight.  Very nice!  I would love some of the hyacinth, but maybe just a handfull.  Also interested in the celery, parrot feather (Yes!!), pickerel, and pennywort.  Happy to have anything that is extra to save it from the compost!!
