I believe this is the reason why a skippy filter is so great. It works like a bog and because its installed above the pond it gravity feeds into the pond or fall. No problems with the roots clogging the pump due to the pump/s are in the pond.

Pond Water Quality / Re: String algae. If you can't beat them...
« on: May 31, 2012, 08:56:16 AM »
I have been battling string algae in my pond for the last two years. In my search for a product to remove the algae safely and not harm my koi, plants,or my biofilter.  I found the most awesome product. Hydra-aqua crystal @ www.hydra-aqua.us.  This stuff attaches it's self to all green algae in pond and cuts off light to the plant. It then drags the algae to the bottom were it can be removed by the pump or by vacuum. After my inisial dose I saw a great difference, and it did not effect my skippy bio-filter at all.I am truley amaized with this product, although it comes from the United Kingdom and takes a while to get here.  O0

a good start would be the perfect biological filter may suggest this http://www.skippysstuff.com/biofiltr.htm
then all you need is a good pump, look for one that will completely turn over the a mount of water in your pond in 24 hours. Keep in mind that if your pond is very deep you need to have a pump on the bottom as well as a skimmer pump and they both should pump to the filter. good luck and post pix as you go.

Pond Chat / Re: winter maintenance

I am well into my first winter in midwest Illinois. Was attempting to keep all going as normal in 4ft deep pond. Though the temps have caused the ice at the end of pond (18 inch deep) to freeze up around the skimmer and pump so I had to remove them. still running bottom pump to biofall all iced over but still flowing. Had sprinkler pump keeping a hole in the center till ice closed in on sprinkler. shut off sprinkler pump and placed in heater to maintain hole. fish seem slow but active.

Thanks for the info. we do have 5 koi in the pond. That's why I wasn't for sure what I had with a couple of gold fish, a shubunkin and the kois. As you say, time will tell, when they get bigger will know for sure. Was just excited to see the little fellers.
Thanks for all that helped.

Hi, just put in our first Koi pond in April this year. We have a couple goldfish, a shubunkin, and butterfly koi. We discovered last night that we have a bunch of little fish of different sizes. The largest baby fish is about an inch long, going from nose to tail.

How can I tell if they are goldfish or koi? Thanks.

Pond Construction & Filtration / red worms
« on: July 06, 2010, 08:08:23 AM »
Hey all,
put in our first pond this season. Lot's of algea, I noticed when I was hosing off the biofilters there are lots of little red worms in the filters. Was wondering if this is normal or could it be due to we're using pond clear enzymes ? Would appreciate your in put.

Pond Chat / Re: Koi eating water lily
« on: June 11, 2010, 09:13:26 PM »
We just put in a new koi pond a few months ago. A friend told me to put clean lava rock in an ice cream bucket with handles. She uses a rod to hook the handles if she ever wants to move the plants. She has big koi fish and they do not like the lava rocks and leaves her lillies alone. Before putting the plants in with the lava rocks, her kois would eat hers too, plus scoot them around.  And oh, her lillies are beautiful and health in these buckets with lava rock.  Just a suggestion, have a good day.

You could also try  www.freecycle.org , if they are in your area you could give them away. It's a really neat web site. Good luck.

Pond Chat / Help, have new Koi pond.
« on: May 27, 2010, 07:19:06 AM »
Hi, we just got our new pond going. It is getting full of alage, but have trapdoor snails on the way to hopefully take care of that. But we are loosing water. Was hoping someone can help. We have a 12x4 pond and in 14 hrs. (starting time pm) we have lost about an inch.  Any suggestions what to look for? No apparanet signs of leakage.
Or is this normal with the alage and the heat?
