Very cool never made fishing lures.  I learned to tie flies.

The silicone mold making material has come a long way.  I made a chocolate corn mold this Christmas.   Looked like an ear of corn just yummier in yellow chocolate.

Sorry I have not been around for some time.  As some of you know my main job at the farm has been caregiver to the owner.  She turned 90 this past summer.  In November she passed away after suffering a stroke.  We were able to keep her home and she passed peacefully in her own room at the farm.  So things have been quite busy out on the farm.  I still managed to get all the Christmas Chocolate packages out to all the family, friends and farmers.  The list of people gets longer every year.  With her passing and the funeral,  I was doing 15 hour days to finish everything.  Even manged to get a package to Kat this year, as a thank you for all the lilies.

Now that things have settled down I  finally got around to start putting some of my soaps online to sell.  Of course I have a few pond related soaps.  lol  A few farm related, also.  Been washing my hands with cows for a while now. :o

Hope all is well with the pond folks.  I have really missed being on here.

very interesting , thanks for sharing . forgive me madam but the '' i don't tolerate attitudes '' , makes it sound like you have aquired one .  .  . sorry about the ''aquired'' which is apparently misspelled  ..twice . . .peace

Attitude is not what I would call what I did to stop someone mistreating an animal. I won't apologize for standing up for what was right.

So well written. I got a huge kick out of it as did my wife. The clincher was  my wife being from Nebraska and me from Philly.    O0

Thanks Jerry.  Too funny so you definitely understand my Philly girl comment.  What part of Nebraska is your wife from?

Thanks Sean.  Big 50 today. Ugh.  Happy Birthday to my fellow AP members.

Moving cattle in the heat and dust is bad...but branding in the heat is worse.

We are praying for rain here.  Hope y'all get some too.

Hoping we have rain coming. It's so bad here now. Hope you get some your way also.  The ponds are just about the only thing green out here now.  If the cows  8-)~ever got to them, no more lilies. {nono}

I refused to help with branding or castration.   ;)There are limits to what I can handle.

I am sweating to death in this heat.  We are moving cattle today.  My lilies seem to be loving this heat.  Maybe rain tomorrow.

We have feeders, mostly mixed breeds that we buy when we get a call from the stockyard and we will buy in a large lot.  They can be baldies, mostly black cattle, which they can be cross bred with anything.  We don't keep bulls anymore, we don't dairy now.  We just raise them as fats and then they go to market, buy them around 5-600 lbs. and when they leave they can be way over 1,000 lbs. but it varies due to body shape and height.  I'm amazed at the difference in them when we first get them, and how well they look when they leave with good feed and pasture.

We don't have as many cattle as in years passed, they price of corn, well, it's hard to feed cattle on corn priced that high!!  :)

Yes feed price are still going up.  Alfalfa was $60 a ton only four years ago,  this year over $250 a ton.  We have reduced the herd last year, because of the drought.  Lucky if the farm breaks even for a second year in a row.

I LOVED your story!  I too am a fan ( as is my husband ) of slow, calm and steady.  We have together and separately put our cows back into our pasture and barns this way.  The frantic hollering, hand waving, whooping tends to scare already jumpy cattle.  I also laughed at your blue air description....as I've turned the air around here a different color also!   lol  AND I won't tolerate meanness to an animal in anyway, shape or form, I don't care how big they are.

Good job, and I love cows!  8)

Thank you,

What kind of cows do you raise?  I can't remember.  They are such funny creatures.  Best part was after we  had shut the gate one of the big bulls mosie up wanting to get in.   I have spoiled him since he was a yearling. I open the gate, let shamus in.  Of course he took his sweet time lol  He stopped for a scatch on the head.  I though mr. Macho was going to fall over.  He moved way away when the big boy got close.   I don't turn my back on a bull, but worked hard when they were small to bond with them.  This big boy who isn't close to full size is over 2000lbs now.

Thought I would share my day on the farm.  When I say it's never a dull moment, I mean it.  ;)

Started off as a normal morning till a call from the sheriff's office. {nono} Cows out on the highway.  So out we go.  Amazing how two words, will kick your butt in gear.

Well it turned out to be 24 Charolais heifers.  Not ours, but you have to get them off the road. Angus are black or red, Charolais are white or very light brown.  So we safely got them into our pasture.  The highway has semi's 24/7.   Poor babies went looking for water because the windmill wasn't working where they were at.  Then the calls to try and find the correct owners.  Now owner located, but we strongly urged them to let them settled down.  Get some much needed water  So the poor heifers got water, grass and a chance to rest.

First attempt to get them back to the corral went well till the train came past,  Spooked them and off they went again.  Second attempt with the owner here, did not go well till we got him to stop helping.  They move cows slowly and gently on this farm. So slow and gentle worked.  All his and our cows in the corral.  We have a loading spot we move them into, so we can put them on a trailer.

While the owner went to get his trailer.  Two women, me being one of them, gently sorted and moved his Charolais heifers.  He came back to them all ready to go.  He looked shocked, and we explained again slow and gentle works.

So while the heifers rested here,  his windmill was fixed.  I can happily report they are now back in their own pasture.  The cows here are happy as can be because they got two bales of alfalfa. O0

Edited out is some very blue air, words I could not post.  >:(- Edited out that I told a few folks off.  >:(- >:(- >:(- I do not tolerate attitudes, when all that was important was keeping the animals safe.  So SW Nebraska heard what a Philly girl sounds like very mad.  lol

Never mess with a crazy animal rescuer.   {nono}  We can be very scary.  ;D

I used to make my own tabs with empty gel capsules.  Kat and Craig turned me on to just mixing the fertilizer right in the pot, before I put the lily in the pot.  Cheaper, easier and is obviously working better. @O@

Kat I switched halfway through potting lilies to using Osmocote,  I can really tell the difference in the size of those lilies.  Can find the other one here.  I will have to try and order it online.

Try a crab drop net trap.  You may have to rig it with smaller netting.  Let them get used to it under where you feed.  Bring it up under them when you feed them.  Might head to one of the fishing docks there.   You may see something that would work for you.

That's my problem.  I probably could find a spot out here to do it.  I think I was better off when I had limited space.  My daydreams weren't so big. lol

Gorgeous pond!  Franklin looks very happy.

Maybe use the seine net to block off part of the pond.  If you feed them in the same spot, might get them in a smaller area to try and net some.

Wow, Kat just amazing.  I was surprised how quick I got blooms here.   :o Of course I shouldn't be,  most of my lilies came from you.  ;D We had snow May 1st >:(-. I didn't even get pond back up till the end of May. Yet I have had blooms for over a month now.  :) Whatever you do girl it sure works. @O@  I see some folks saying they are getting their first blooms the middle of July this year.  Must be your magic touch, that makes the difference.

How deep is your pond?  You might need to drain it down a bit. That might make it easier.  Also, a seine net to contain the fish in a smaller area, might help.

You are not getting rid of Franklin are you?

Well I sprayed weeds  for three hours this morning, so my brain may not be functioning correctly.

I sat down and did my Craiglist search.

This should be my new pond plan.  @O@ I'm just shy {nono} of the available cash to make it happen.  lol

My new enclosure and the pond to go in it.  Remember my brain is on roundup at the moment.  8-)~

Well the larger cow pot was a dairy cow.  lol If you look close you can see I painted over the bell.  ::)

I think I may put the pots beside the lotus tub.  Maybe Mike, the lotus destroyer, will stay away. :-\

Pond Chat / Mutant Vips
« on: July 15, 2013, 11:52:49 AM »
Well, I have figured out viviparous tropical waterlilies love our horrible weather in Nebraska.  The pads have been forming new plants at an unusual rate to me. All of the Vip tropicals have bloomed and grown, much better than any tropical I have currently.  I had moved some plants two weeks ago to a different stock tank.  I pruned a few pads and tossed them in an empty tub of water.  Out of ten pads tossed in the bucket ten have plants forming.  They are either from a Key Largo or Hoku Kea.

Now for the  ::) mutant.  This is exactly two weeks from removing it from the parent plant.  The buttons were just fuzzy and no swelling when I dropped them in the tub.  This seems to have three plant starts from one pad.

Pond Chat / Water depth for small starts
« on: July 15, 2013, 09:37:49 AM »
I have a number of small start waterlilies.  I have usually tried to match the water depth with height of the pad growth.  I am trying to consolidate all the small lilies.  Trying to clear space for some stock tanks.  They will hopefully be moved to the yard in two weeks.

So to my question.  Can I put the small starts in deeper water for about two weeks? It would be a least a foot over the pads.
