Ahhh yes, good old Mr. Davis! I remember him. Thanks for the nice words, I'm going to miss that pond. We're in New Bern now.

Pond Chat / Hey everyone! Happy news, sad news
« on: April 12, 2014, 02:26:18 PM »
The good news is that we've finally completed our move from Il to NC. The bad news is that (because of the time frame) I left EVERYTHING at the old pond. All my lilies, lotuses, dwarf lilies, several varieties of horsetail, marestail variegated sweet flag... everything. I have a whole new canvas of plants to learn about, and will have to scope out the pond scene here. Maybe go with something small. Don't know if these pics will show, but this is what I left behind:

The buyers said "Oh our dog will love playing in there!"   :(  Life goes on. On the plus side, I found extensive parrot feather in a ditch and giant pennywort by the river. Locals call them weeds--- I paid a fortune for them up north.  :D

Pond Chat / Re: How to combat snails?
« on: June 03, 2012, 02:17:41 PM »
YO YO LOACH. It looks strange (looks like the stripes say "yo yo" on the side, hence the name), and hides whenever you come by, but it eats ALL the snails.  We had an infestation (hundreds) in our aquarium and that little fish ate every single one.

It's just a Wiki article, but it is pretty accurate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoyo_loach
Mine hides a lot, but completely eliminated our snails.

If you come over to my house, I can make you some genuine real donuts! :)

They are pretty cute, though!

They are all stunning. Curious, though- how do you keep your labels from fading? This is a common problem. I've tried everything: aluminum markers, stainless steel markers, plastic markers, sharpies, etchings, you name it! They all fail with time. It's amazing how you keep track of it all.

« on: December 10, 2011, 08:03:13 PM »
I've had a very bad pond year. I didn't divide my lilies, many jumped from their pots, and are now spreading all over the pond bottoms. Unfortunately, I have many reds, like Perry's baby red, etc, that all started growing together and I cant tell what's what. Spent some big bucks for those named lilies and now I can't identify them. I didn't clean the ponds, I didn't get one of my two streams going, and have hardly cleaned the filters at all. AND I have weeds- big prairie weeds that supposedly have roots 12 feet deep and I have no idea how to fix that.

However- my lilies did great and my fish are all healthy and had plenty of babies. :) Go figure!

I love it. It has a very clean and contemporary look, and I like how you put that fish fountain in the corner- it breaks up the symmetry for a nice surprise. Love the tile!

I'm sorry, Sarah. I haven't been on here too much lately, but have had discussions and trades with Scott. Always a pleasant, knowledgeable, and generous person who was a great presence here. He will be sorely missed.

;D That was funny. I like this one:
4. You end sentences with a preposition: "Where's my coat at?"

That is so true. I've been here 13 years now and sometimes it still gets me. "I'm going to the post office. You wanna come with?"

Pond Chat / Re: My lamb drowned
« on: April 03, 2011, 08:51:23 AM »
Sorry about your lamb.  :'(

My sister used custom cut lattice. The lattice is cut so it rests on all edges of the pond and can be weighted down with a heavy rock. They take it off when they're home and put it on at night & when they're away.

I've often thought about doing that. Or maybe use a large powder-coated metal grid that can be installed just under the water's surface.

5' is a dream pond--but, with 5' deep water how do you plan on keeping that bottom clean--my pond is 5' deep and I would hate to think I had to keep it vacuumed out...I have 2 bds and would NEVER be with out them...they really are super easy to put in and not awfully expensive...Now the pump sitting in a hole in the bottom---just a couple of problems arise right off--the gunk is going to stop that pump up and your going to have to be pulling it out ALL the time and cleaning it--not to mention that is really hard on a pump...2nd--what if something causes a break in the hose outside of the pond--your going to totally drain that pond and your fish will be dead....if you plan on doing the pump inside the pond I would suggest putting it up off the bottom so if there ever is a break then you still have a bit of water for the fish to survive in....again I really would reconsider a bd---alot less work will be involved if you put one in and you will NEVER have to do that hard on your back spring cleaning because the pond will never have accumulation on the bottom....not to mention having to move fish out to do that cleaning....and I would say yes the sod would wick the water out...
Lawanna

That is a VERY good point.  I have a gravity fed bottom drain (where the pressure and gravity moves the water up and out of the pond at a halfway point. Pond would never drain). And what will you do with all that muck?

I second what Jerry said... it looks great! Can't wait to see it filled. I suspect you'll need waders the next time you're standing there. Congrats!

Now that the snow is melting, I'm able to see a few fish. Unfortunately I see two dead frogs that I can't quite get to.

Happens every spring. The frogs go into the skimmer for no good reason in the fall, and they end up dead. Dumb frogs. :-\

My heart goes out for them. It's so devastating. Earthquake, Tsunami, and then nuclear emergencies. I can only imagine waking up normal and going about the daily routine and then everything changes. Horrible. Can only wish them the best.

However, I have no doubt about Japan's ability. They've been through a lot and they will recover.

TOKYO – Japan's central bank pumped a record $184 billion into money markets and took other measures to protect a teetering economy Monday, as the Tokyo stock market nose-dived following a devastating earthquake and tsunami.

That is pretty amazing.  O0

Pond Chat / Running water... :)
« on: March 14, 2011, 08:19:40 AM »
Yesterday my hubby was able to get a pump in the pond (with a broken hand to boot) and get the skimmer & TT up and running. It had been non-operational since mid-December. There is still quite a bit of ice on the pond, cant see the fish yet. But we noticed immediately that the birds and critters came back to the stream and haven't left since.

We'll have a massive cleaning this spring and we ain't no spring chickens anymore. There is a lot of creaking in the bones lately. :(

Yipppeee........another Karen  @O@

Karen

Ditto!

There was once another forum member named Joyce who actually did have sod right up to the edge. That may have been a preform though. I think with a liner that yes, the sod would leach water out- but as long as you're willing to add the water back then it could work. However, with a pond 5' deep you may need reinforcement of the edge in something like concrete. "Coping", like for a swimming pool. What kind of soil do you have?

I missed 6, but I still passed. I'm ashamed to have forgotten that it was @#$%^&* who said "Give me liberty or give me death". I was thinking @#$%...

That was a good test! I'll have my teenage daughter take it when she gets home from school.

« on: February 21, 2011, 09:36:52 AM »
I'm sorry. That is a huge amount to lose, but don't give up hope yet. Maybe some babies survived.

I'm expecting a lot of losses too, as one of my deicers got flipped over by the wind and tripped the GFCI so that both deicers got shut off. We also lost a pump. Most of the snow from the big storm is gone but we're expecting more tonight. I haven't been able to see anything yet. Not a good winter.

Mikey, that was a really nice tidbit & photo.

Unrelated... I once visited my brother in Monterrey when he was going to the Naval postgraduate school. I loved it there. I had pie and coffee at a cute little place in Carmel, I lost my sunglasses at Pebble Beach, and I hit a rock that was jutting out into the roadway and did 1,600.00 worth of damage to my brother's car.  @O@

Anyway, Here is what Helvola looks like. It's color is actually a little bit more yellow than the photo shows.

Excuse the little plastic boat, this one shows the pretty mottled pads of Helvola

I wish I was creative enough to design such a pretty thing.

Either here or over on Koiphen there was a group Hens & Chicks purchase. They purchased a wholesale lot from a grower (overseas?) and then divided everything up between the participating members.
If I remember correctly the minimum buy from the grower was 100, but there were several different varieties. Anyone else remember that?

I didn't participate, but the folks who did got a very nice variety for a very reasonable price.
(just an idea.... spring is coming!  ;))
