Hi!
Sorry it's been long getting back.  My rose bushes are not to close to the pond. 2 are about 8 feet away and 3 are on the other side of yard. My husband wants me to try a 7 spray he uses in our garden before some things start blooming. I am not sure of exact name because he just says 7 spray. So I am going to try it on the front yard ones. I will let you all know later this weekend.

Thanks!
Kim

Lu Ann and Tink,

Thanks for answering!! This is my first summer with these roses. They are the only roses I have. I am not sure what to do!  :-\  What is the name of the chemical you mix with water? I am willing to try anything. Mine are also being eaten from the bottom upward too.  I have read about Neem Oil and using this with water, have you ever tried it? I am thinking about it. The jap. beetles are starting to show up. I found 2 this morning. What do they not like eat on my rose leaves?

I use baby powder to keep ants out. They will not cross it. I am wondering if I should try something like that around my roses on the ground.

Thanks for your advice! I need it!!!!!!!!!!!

I am having trouble with my knock out roses, they are being eaten by something. I know its not beetles. I dont really see any bugs on them. I do see some bugs in the bloom but nothing on the leaves. It's the leaves that are being eaten. Holes in the leaves. Can I use a rose dust? Is there a home remendy?
Thanks for your help!

Hmmmm, you run outside banging pots and pans together, screaming at the top of your lungs...all to chase off a heron (and none of your neighbors talk to you anymore because they think you should be commited!)

Kathy,

I was at work and my next door neighbor called to let me know that my dogs where barking like they wanted to get ahold of something and bite it,( I have very mild tempered beagles that spend their days in a 25' x 25' pin built in the woods beside my home) so she went to see, she reported the largest bird in the middle of my pond, she wanted to know what to do, she was going to keep going to shase it off, but it was "HUGE"  :o...great neighbors! o(:-) She didnt know about the containers in the middle holding the lillies and thought it was standing in the bottom!I said get a gun! She said she asked her husband if she could but they are protected here. So she stood guard for a few days until my scarecrow came!

You would fit right in here!!!

What a great job! It looks like you can set inside your home and view also!! I wish I could do that one. But I chose a more private spot and I am happy just the same. You did a great job with the rocks too!!  @O@

Missy,

I use MelaFix for my pond. It has always taken care of what problems my fish might have. It does not hurt the beneficial bacteria. It does not hurt my frogs or salimanders. It does a different smell for a day. Not bad just different.

Cath,

Yes!  @O@ I do hope you find some tiny little sprigs coming to life! I am very much willing to pay for them and the shipping. I am so excited! I having been thinking about this plant for two years and just decided to take the leap this year. I have a grape harbour with out the grape vine  :'(  So there is plenty of room for it. I am thinking about planting some type of ornamental grass on the sides to cover the posts.

I chose the Bonanza for the post at my pond. I need some extra color there and thought the purple would look great.

I have a clematis that is light pink with 4 rounded edges similar to the dogwood bloom. I would send you some of it if you are interested. I don't know the name.

Tink, you can have some too. O0

Have a great day!

Hello,

I am looking for a clematis that I have seen listed as two by two names; Terniflora and Sweet Autumn. I am also looking for Bonanza clematis. I would like to buy the plants not seeds. My thumb is not so green.  :(

If you have this plant can you tell me if you have ever seen it with another fall blooming clematis. I know this plant is a knockout by itself but I am just wanting more than white to make the show more of a bang!

I have a wooden post with a birdhouse on the it beside my pond. I want to plant the Bonanza there because it is very colorful and not a big vine. It is only to grow 10'. I think that would hide the post and make the birdhouse stand out. :o
Thanks!

Tink,
I have mine in full sun. I also have clay soil. This will be the 3rd summer and the limbs are just starting to bud and a few are opening up! The limbs are 2 1/2 feet tall and I hope they will grow another 3 feet this year.  :D Mine is beside my pond so I add a little water from the filter when I clean it out each time. Even after the hail storm it came back even filled in alittle. The bark has the marks from the damage but it didnt kill it.  @O@

You have me very interested! I love my pond but not cleaning the filter weekly will be a benefit! I did a search and found some on bizrate from Ward's Natural Science. $24.95 for 45 of the little creatures! How many do you think it will take? 200??? (2000 gal.pond)
Though I don't really want to change my filter, and I really dont have the room, I am thinking of putting a screen over the out pipe to keep them in and giving it a try!

Wow!  :D

What a beautiful shrub! I dont plan on letting mine get much more than 7' tall. I plan on trimming it to fit the spot. I do need about 3-4' to fill in a spot. I cant wait for mine to look like that! I have day lillies in front of mine. Thanks for sharing the picture.

I wanted something different for around my pond and I found a Black Lace Sambucus elderberry bush. On June 22, 2008 (my son's birthday!) we had a hail storm here and my bush was only on its second year being planted, and it had severe damage and it survived!! @O@ I like Japenese Maple trees but didnt want a tree beside my pond so I found this in a Garden Gate magazine I subscribe to. This will the third summer for it and I am looking forward to it! There are several different types of elderberry bushes. It would be different and it is worth the try.

Pond Construction & Filtration / Bio Filter
« on: April 03, 2008, 07:05:36 PM »
Hi!

I want to replace my filter this year. I need an external bio filter for a pond 2000 gal. I am looking at the Tetra ClearChoice Pressurized 2500. Does anybody use this one?? Do you like it?  Any advice is welcome! I do have several goldies! o( o(  No koi. I am not sold on the back wash really cleaning the filter. I have salamanders in the spring and they seem to get in my pump and can clog up the filter sprayer. I have thought about making a filter but I really dont want to. Soooo what filters do you recommend! I have no bottom drain.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!

I will put your addy to great use. I have a wooden box that surrounds my filter now and I plan to put this one inside it also. The lines come up between some rocks and are hidden. I drain the filter in the winter and put hoses back under the water until spring. I bought the first one and plan to make my own for the extra one. It doenst need to be perfect just  usable. I liked your advice and will try to get some very sturdy plastic.

Thanks!

Hi!

I would like to make an extra filter to help the one I have. I want more fish!!!

I use an external filter box and love it. It has 3 foam filters and bio balls in the bottom.

My ? is do you think a walmart tote will hold up to the heat in the summer. I live in zone 5 and max heat is 100 but not usally more than a few days in a row, the average heat is around 90 in the middle of the day.

I was even thinking of using two, the second for a reinforcement but not sure.

Thanks for your advice!

Jennie,

Thanks for posting this demo!

Did you put anything around the wire and the tip you added?
I am thinking of the black tape I see my husband use.

I do believe I can do this! I am going to put 3 lights on one transformer for my pond. I do understand to use enough watts for the lights. But it will be great to have them on one timer and my other lights around the pond on another!

I am really tired of unplugging them and I even bought a timer for out doors but I could not get all 3 plugged in on it. And one summer was the limit for it.

So YES!  I am excited!
Thanks!!!!

Hi!

I tried the Yerba Mansa. It bloomed a little. I think I drowned it though.  I would buy more if I found it again in my area.

Good luck!!!!!  O0

Pond Chat / Koi Clay
« on: May 25, 2007, 06:39:58 PM »
Howdy!

I have read where several ponders write they use koi clay for alge. I am starting to have a hard time with string alge. I want to stop it before it gets worse. I have used peroxide but it is not helping this time.

My ? is, do I need to look for a certain type of koi clay? or a certain brand is better than others?  I don't know anything about it and would like to learn more.

Thanks for the info!!

Kim  :)
