Pond Chat / Re: Pond Bog Idea
« on: July 14, 2007, 10:55:25 AM »
Can't blame you for the "Bog" idea, they are quite tempting. Tim God has a thread started in the "Bog Gardens" section and can give you his personal expierience and suggestions. He linked a site about pond constuction http://www.nelsonwatergardens.com/data/resources/other/1_Bog%20Filter%20Construction.pdf and from what I understand from them is that your bog area needs to cover 10 to 20 percent of the surface of your pond area however they suggest having no standing water above the gravel.... good luck and keep us up to date on the make over.

Pond Chat / Re: How Do You Catch Fish Out of Your Pond?
« on: July 13, 2007, 03:19:57 PM »
I recently relocated ours and found this to be true in my case..... the bigger the fish, the easier to catch. I found that the drag of the net through the water limited my snatching ability so if I wasn't able to snatch him in the first 6 to 12 inches of movement in the water then the fish was gone.

After about a dozen fish the best tactic for me was to cut off the angles of the fish escape areas from a distance and then to slowly move in continuing to react to his movement and continuing to cover the angles from which he can escape.... fish moves... net moves to reduce angles of escape.... fish moves.... net moves to reduce angles of escape.... eventually the fish will make a mistake and he can be easily netted with no harm to fish or fisherman.

Good luck and happy fishing :)

.........so if I understand correcty,

Tropicals are more sensitive to temperature and depth than Hardy's?

Gradual steps in lowering the depth over the crown of tropicals?

The bigger the pot the bigger the plant in both tropicals and Hardy's?

First of all Tim thanks for all of the photos and how to's on the Bog.... we all but built one this year and don't doubt we end up with one in the future.... I think they are great.

Do have a question on your flower pot that is on its side, I assume it is clay or ceramic and has water trickling out of it so the question is how did you make the hole for it, where is the hose coming in, do you have some gravel in it etc. etc.

Thanks Jim

Thanks for te replies. Yes I clean inside the cover and remove the propellor and all... I was wondering if I was missing something as all by itself it increased its output to 100%.

unfortunately, upside down it says: SHADOWS do 77VM, and that just doesn't make much sense!

It would make perfect sense if "SHADOWS do 77VM" was the name of their Album/CD

Pond Chat / Submersible Pump Flow///Cleaning the pump
« on: June 19, 2007, 03:27:24 PM »
I have a question for those familiar with submersible pumps as ours has me stumped. We have a 1 year old Pond Master 950 submersible and roughly 3 months ago it lost some of its output volume. I cleaned it by running the garden hose spray through it and even took the Vortex off to make sure everything visible was removed. It helped some but the volume was less.

Roughly 2 weeks ago the pump resumed to its origianal output volume by itself and now two weeks later it looks like it has lost a little output........

The question is, How do you clean your submersible pump and or is there a trick to keeping the output volume up?

Chit Chat / Re: Rain
« on: June 03, 2007, 08:03:42 AM »
3 1/2  inches of Glorious rain Saturday thanks to "Barry" the God sent tropical storm.... it was absolutely wonderful to hear it, see it, and smell it.......... almost forgot how it was...............

Toads loved the rain so much that they had them a "Love-In" in the pond...... they had eggs everywhere and weren't through when I went out there early this morning........ Grabbed the net and removed 15 toads (1 "Love-In" fatality....drowning victim) and finaly stopped when I realized the herd was coming back to the pond and jumping back in "Piggy-Back"..... the fish will again love the toadscargoe this year.
