i use a rectangular kitchen wash plastic bin that is about 8 inches long, 16 wide, and 5 inches tall

i keep irises and rushes
they are in a mixture of garden soil and black dirt, and grow like crazy
i use burlap and pea gravel over the dirt to keep it from going into the pond and causing an algae bloom

do you mean potash?

or actually ash from a pot?(no joke)

yes potash is very beneficial

what you want is an npk fert that is preferably high in nitrogen

most grasses they sell are very aggresive
most of theses prairie plants are very
passive and wont spread much
except for jeruselum artichoke
and maximilian sunflower O0

thanks for the posts!
our pond is about 14 feet by 20 feet with a 4 foot deep section.
It actually was a toad, i saw him lunge ate it. no disrespect, but i do know the difference between toads and frogs ::) besides, we havent seen any frogs around the pond for ages :-\
flyhawk-not much of a story- when i was young i loved red tailed hawks-still do!
they are my birth animal!
so when i was young, while i was playing a fighter jet game on the computer, i came up with the name "flyhawk" :)

Pond Chat / Re: Do you feed your fish?
« on: June 13, 2008, 10:37:31 AM »
i have 4 large goldfish, 2 bluegills, and a young bass. i never feed them on a daily bases. {nono} i do occasionally give them a nightcrawler treat. as long as you have either snails, tadpoles, algae or plants, the goldfish will feed off those. my gold fish are fat, and theyve never tasted flake food! :)

Pond Construction & Filtration / Re: Hiding a filterfalls

dont get me started..... ok we have an old 55 gallon little pond, at the top of the water fall, filled with lava stone. its a great filter. its sorruonded by rocks so its totally natural looking, and it cost us......$5.00!!!

my pond has a 2 foot, 1 foot, and a three fot section. the 1 ft is covered in small gravel, but theres not alot showing because i have alot of marginals. My 2ft is covered in a thin layer of gravel, but theres also a layer of muck for weed growth. i also have alot of lilies so i cant see the bottom. my 3ft section under the water fall, has large stones for fish to hide in and cool of in in the deep waters of the pond.
