Pond Chat / Frog or toad eggs .... 2nd opinion
« on: April 23, 2009, 09:27:03 AM »
I think frog eggs seeing as how they are in a clump not the long strings I get from the toads.

The tadpoles you see around the clump are toads, they are not from this batch of eggs. I had LOTS of toads.

Pond Chat / shipping lotus tuber question
« on: April 19, 2009, 06:47:01 PM »
How do you prepare tuber for shipping?
Do you wrap the tuber in damp paper towels, put in ziploc baggie & then package in a box?
 Or what?

All of this carefully of course.

Pond Chat / It bloomed
« on: September 12, 2008, 03:15:34 PM »
The lily from Lawanna, I love it. My first tropical (unknown), it took a while but it bloomed & has bloomed every day since the first one.

Some pics ... one was taken on a sunny day & so looks washed out, the other was a rainy overcast day.

Pond Chat / Thanks Lawanna
« on: August 31, 2008, 10:08:01 PM »
I wasn't sure what the stuff was that came with the lily. I at first thought some kind of algae but discarded that idea real quick but I figured it must be something that liked water. Anyhow, I tossed it into the water container garden up front & forgot about it. I later found out it was a water plant of some sort & that it was called bladderwort .... either by a conversation between you & someone else or a search or a combination of both (probably this one).

Well, it has a flower. Glad I didn't throw it away. LOL

The lily is also getting ready to bloom. It has one bud breaking water surface & 2 more coming up.

Pond Chat / costia question
« on: August 07, 2008, 02:04:54 AM »
Didn't know where to put this, sorry if it's in the wrong place.

Anyhow, do costia affect minnows?

If so & you get an outbreak & you have minnows in your pond wouldn't they be the first to go because they're so small? It wouldn't take as much on them because of their size.

I'd think they'd be like the canaries of the pond ... anything that goes wrong with the pond you'd think would affect them first due to their small size or am I way off?

Pond Chat / What are your plants (pond) planted in?
« on: August 03, 2008, 12:16:05 PM »
I read somewhere they could be planted in pea gravel so that's what I planted mine in. Now I'm starting to think that that may be the reason they're not doing so well.

Pond Chat / Couple questions
« on: July 20, 2008, 06:07:14 PM »
Do anchor worms looks wormish or are they more mucusy ... like a piece of white mucus?

Also, can water lilies grow & be ok in a little more than foot of water? .... I want to move them to my shelf & out of the center deep (a little more than 2 feet) part of my pond.

Pond Chat / N. Pymaea question
« on: June 09, 2008, 06:01:48 PM »
Sushi sent seeds out.

Anyhow does this plant come back like regular lilies, from roots or does it come back from seeds only every year? I know it'll make seeds, I was just wondering if it also comes back from roots or does the plant die off & restart every year from seeds.

Am I making sense?

I was going to get one I found at Home Depot for $30 until I saw it was a grafted one.

Are most of these grafted or was this one in the minority?

How many of you who have J maples have grafted ones?

Terrestrial Gardening / star jasmine question
« on: April 11, 2008, 06:51:21 PM »
I got a star jasmine today. The tag says hardy to 10F, that should be ok here (or so I think) but when I do a search on it the net says it's hardy to zone 9, maybe zone 8.
Which is it? Does anyone have this & if so, what is your experience with it?

Places shouldn't sell non-hardy plants unless they're blatantly marked as such.

I got a cement mixing pan & mixed some of my clay soil, peat, sphagnum & sand in it. Put it in the ground near the pond.

I'm wanting to put CP in it. I got one of each of what Lowe's had, got home & realized a couple aren't what I was hoping they were.
The pitcher plant is a nep not a sarr ... sounds like the butterwort won't work either .... not sure about the sundew but hey the VFT should work.

I hope.
