Pond Chat / I have had an awful summer with my pond
« on: October 18, 2016, 09:39:37 AM »
I've had my water garden for 10 years but never a summer like this.

My pond averages 15-20" deep and contains about 800 gallons of water - various water plants (lilies, some marginal) and just a few small goldfish that I rarely feed.

I changed my filtration set up this year. I had been using a skimmer - Pond Mag 9.5 pump and the atlantic filto falls with a UV lilght too. I changed to

OASE AquaMax Eco Classic 1200 Pump
and Oase Filto Clear 1600 filter with UV.
(and had to put my skimmer back in)

This system should be able to handle my pond size and fish load.

Two things happened this year. One was not my fault and one was.

It was REALLY hot ! It got hot early in the year and stayed hot - so the water temp was higher than normal.
The dumb thing I did. With the new pond set up, I thinned my water lilies too much, hot water, lots of sun, little surface coverage. :(

So I have this floating scum that rises during the day and goes away at night.
I got into the pond and vacuumed 95% of the debris off the bottom. This thing is clean folks.
I tried all types of Micro lift products recommended by my pond store.
I did not feed my few fish at all.
I added extra aeration for the hottest months.
I did several major water changes (40%).
 All this to no avail.

I ordered a pond test kit and checked water parameters. (When did they stop putting KH testers in the kits ? - I ordered it separately.) All test results were fine except ph was high. No amount of baking soda would lower it.

We had almost no rain. No runoff goes into the pond.

My pic was taken very early morning - scum just starting

Now fall is here. Pond is cooling. Still floating yuck on warm days. My plants are slowing down but I find it curious that my water hyacinths seemed to die in the pond very early. This season is over but I need some pond expert advice for next year. I would hate to have to tear down the pond but I don't want to fight this again all summer. Should I drain it this winter ? Wouldn't that be worse for the fish.

 Any suggestions appreciated.

 {:-P;;

Well, I've bitten off to much work for the summer.  Need to thin out a pond that I plan to redo later in the year.  I have named and labeled hardies to sell  (no trades as I dont need anymore plants).  These are not fresh starts but well started plants some even have buds.

I'll sell the lilies for $6 ea plus a total of $8.00 postage.  ( max of 4 lilies per box)

You must order a minimum of 2 lilies :  this cost $12 plust 8.00 =  $ 20.00 minimum amt

I will choose what to send as I dont have time to seperate varities.  If you will tell me which ones you already have I will try to not duplicate unless that is what you want.  The lilies will be chosen by me from the following varieties: Almost Black, Perrys Baby Red, Aurora, Andreanne, Chrysantha, Perrys Orange Sunset, Perrys Fire Opal.

Pond Chat / tropical lilies without new starts ?
« on: October 05, 2006, 09:59:52 AM »
Last year I overwintered my tropicals by taking a new baby plantlet from each pot.  This year... I do NOT have a baby on Green Smoke or Electra.  I've had pretty good luck with tubers from Electra but I hate to lose my Green Smoke.  Cant hardly take a gallon size root ball and put it in a small pot to fit in the aquairum.  Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Pond Chat / white lily photo
« on: August 30, 2006, 09:48:10 AM »
I love the form of this lily. It doesnt get too big and the petals in number and form appeal to me.  This is the one that I orginally thought was a tropical - it came from a collector several years ago...  Does it look familiar to anyone ?

Pond Chat / do you see double in these lily photos ?
« on: August 30, 2006, 09:45:53 AM »
Finally a bloom on both lilies at the same time.  The one on the left is supposed to be Chrysantha.  ON the right Aurora...  The pads - top and bottom look the same to me.  On one hand the flowers look alike but yet not  :D

Would love some lily expert guidance on how to differentiate between the two or do you think they are the same ?

Pond Chat / poorer pond performance this year....
« on: August 27, 2006, 08:15:05 AM »
My pond/lilies and other plants have performed poorly this year in comparison with last year.  I think this is my 4th summer with the main pond.  I have done the same things as always with 2 exceptions....

1) string algea was rampant this spring - I mean pump clogging wild - I used hydrogen peroxide twice.

2) I added a pinch of potash early in the season..

I have had lily blooms but they have not seemed as generous as normal.. and my water hyacinths... usually I throw heaps in the compost bin but this year they have almost wasted away.  (I gave my Mom some for her pond that is more shady and her's have done great).

We have had some really funky weather and extreme temps.  I realize that water is constantly changing in spite of our interference.

Can anyone offer any comments on what might have been going on this year ?

thanks
charlotte
