Pond Chat / Waterfall rebuilding done, leak fixed
« on: May 27, 2008, 01:57:50 PM »
Our little pond was loosing water slowly last summer and the leak was worse this spring. It turned out that darn tree roots had poked all kinds of holes in the liner. So, the waterfall had to come down. My husband rebuilt it, bigger of course.  It sounds wonderful!  Here are before and after pics. I just planted some impatiens in-between the rocks to soften the look a bit. Once they grow, they'll cover most of the waterfall.

Mine doesn't make it through the winter. I have a small pond, so a few bunches would be enough.

Pond Chat / Hello everyone!
« on: April 01, 2008, 08:36:45 AM »
I've posted in the past but had a slow year last year.  I was pregnant with #3 and didn't do much with the pond. Now I'm staying home this summer and have new energy for ponding.  I had a baby girl in January (girl #3) and have been waiting for spring to arrive.  I just walked up to the pond for the first time in about 6 months and I have some work to do! Anyway, just wanted to say hi! 8)

Pond Chat / Another bird attack! Feel like giving up
« on: May 21, 2007, 06:02:19 AM »
 >:( >:( >:( >:(
Last Friday I went to check on my fishies, haven't seen them for a while since it's cool here at night.  They've been hiding on the bottom.  Looked and looked, only found one of my 5 comets.  Also, saw a feather floating. Nothing else disturbed, not even a pot turned.  My pond is small, about 5x6 feet, 20 inches deep. I have good coverage with huge trees over the pond. A bird of some sort must have gone in and taken 4 comets.... :'( :'( :'( :'(
This happened to me before, two years ago in the winter when the pond was bare with no leaf coverage.  Didn't expect any problems with all the lily pads covering the surface, cinder blocks I have for hiding places and the trees.
Keeping the pond covered year round is not an option, I'd rather not have any fish.
so...I don't know what to do.  I guess I give up keeping goldfish. Thinking about just getting a couple of minnows.

Pond Chat / lotus leaves turning black
« on: May 03, 2007, 04:30:13 PM »
Well, my lotus plants made it through the cold snap.  They look like they are all growing. The problem is that the baby leaves turn black as soon as they start opening. All three are potted in pots outside the pond, in full sun. I potted them using store bought well-composted manure and topsoil.  Added some Osmocote.
They have healthy looking growth tips.  Could they still be recovering from the cold weather? They were covered when it went down to 30's (we had some nights with 20's).  Now it's been warm, highs in the 70-80's and lows in the 50-60's.

Mine has never made it through winter in my shallow pond (about 18 inches); I cut it really short in the fall and there is nothing left in the spring. In the summer it grows so huge I have to keep cutting it.
Does anyone have any extra they could spare for postage or a small fee?
Thanks,
Eija  :)

For all you warm climate dwellers: I would love to buy some water hyacinths for my biofilter. Since they grow like weeds, just a few would be enough. Every fall, I have to compost mine, too cold here in the winter  :-\

Pond Chat / Cold weather next weekend - what to do with lotus?
« on: April 02, 2007, 07:11:53 AM »
Heeelp! :-\

It's been really warm here (mid 70's to 80's) but the weather is going to turn cold on Wednesday and the high temp. on Saturday is supposed to be 40 F :o :o
I've potted my lotus, one in a ceramic pot that can be moved and the other in a whiskey barrel that is way too heavy to lift. They are both looking good and I can see roots coming out.  Are they going to be ok? :-\
It's supposed to go back to mid-50's by next week.
Thanks,
Eija

Pond Chat / I bought waders today!
« on: March 10, 2007, 05:04:19 PM »
Now I can finally get in the pond without getting wet! The waders go all the way up, with suspenders and everything!  Im going to get the pond going next weekend and I'm so excited about not having to feel that cold water   @O@ @O@ @O@ @O@
Need to get the marginal pots up and repot.  All my waterlilies overwintered in the garage, in totes. They look great and need to be repotted as well.

ok, I'm very anxious to get this spring going. 8-)~ I bought  Chawan Basu tubers (thanks Charlotte!) and they were already growing when I received them. Both growing tips have healthy looking starts on them and they growing like crazy in the tub of water I put them in.  I've been keeping them warm since I got them last week.  I know you guys advise against starting lotus inside due to threat of rotting, etc.  Can I still put these little guys in cold water in my garage to force them back to dormancy?  :-\I was thinking about trying to start them inside in a tub placed on green house heating pad.  The temperature outside is 30. Usually by first week of May, we don't get frost anymore.
Thanks,
Eija

Pond Chat / Would like to give a lotus a try this summer
« on: February 24, 2007, 04:50:11 PM »
Hi there!
I'm a long-time lurker coming out of hibernation.  The weather is finally turning a little warmer here in Ohio  and I'm starting to think about gardening again.  My 450 gal pond (about 5-6 goldfish) seems to have overwintered fine.
Last year, I also did a whiskey barrel on the deck, loved it! :D
This summer, I would like to give a lotus a try.  I cannot fit any more plants in the pond, the bottom is covered with lily pots.  I would love to do a small lotus in a pot on the deck.  Any suggestions, ideas, pictures?
I just went to Garden Ridge and picked up 6 flower pots, will go back for bigger ones.
thanks!

Pond Chat / Deicers - Thermo 100 W or Laguna 200W?
« on: September 20, 2006, 06:33:55 AM »
Hi there!
This winter, I was thinking about adding a deicer to keep a hole open in my little pond. Last two winters, I used a air pump and it works for a while.  My pond is about 6x7 ft, only 18 inches deep. AZponds has two deicers, that seem to work for my size pond: Thermo 100W for $39.95 and Laguna 200W for $29.99.
I don't think I need anything with more watts since I only have about 450 gal.
Any recos on either of these?

Thanks!

Pond Chat / Source for pond netting
« on: September 05, 2006, 07:58:14 AM »
Fall is here and it's almost time for me to cover the pond with a net to catch the leaves. Previously I've used garden netting which is too frustating since the holes are too big and small leaves fall in.  Does anybody here have a source for a good sturdy netting that has really small homes?  I've googled pond netting and usnetting.com has net that has 1/6 inch holes.
Any suggestions?
I need a high quality net that will last.

Thanks,
Eija
