Pond Chat / Ugh, sometimes I hate my fish
« on: May 31, 2010, 09:30:05 AM »
The water is all muddy looking. We had a pretty good storm so thought maybe that was it but I couldn't figure out how.
Then I see the floating heart I received & potted up a few days ago floating ... I knew then it was the fish. They had found it & dug it up.
I was really hoping they would leave it alone or at least not find it, no such luck.

Yes, there were rocks on top. Little brats, LOL.

My koi have never spawned till this year.
I wasn't expecting it as they've not done it before & it was a surprise. So on a whim I decided to collect some of the eggs as they were munching em up & I wanted to see some babies.
Well, now I have teeny tiny little fish in an aquarium & no idea what to feed them.

I've heard boiled egg yolk ... can I crunch up some flakes or koi pellets real fine for them?

Thought about looking for bugs from the pond but they'd be too big or maybe collecting some string algae from the pond & letting them eat whatever may be in it.

I'm kinda excited.

Pond Chat / worst year yet for string algae
« on: May 01, 2010, 10:58:04 AM »
I have never had it this bad before. It is horrid this year.

Maybe the cool weather stunting the growth of the other plants. IDK. The warm then the cool again.

All I know is it's bad this year.

Pond Chat / lotus seedling
« on: April 28, 2010, 01:07:01 PM »
I started 2 seeds & they were doing good. Had 3 leaves each. It was warm so I put them outside in their permanent home, half a 55 gallon barrel.
It then dropped & the temps got cool for while, now it's fluctuating temps. They got stunted or something. The leaves are still there, small but it hasn't done much else.
Will they be ok & spring back when it gets warm or am I gonna have to start over?

Terrestrial Gardening / Mint
« on: April 22, 2010, 12:40:29 PM »
I didn't know mint was like this when I planted it. I put it in with some cannas. The mint has gone nuts & I don't see any sign of life from the cannas.
Could the mint have caused this or did the cannas just maybe die? We did have a bad ... cold, wet, snow, ice .... winter this year & where the cannas are it can stay pretty wet.

Anyone grow this?
I got some & thought it was full sun but a search yields differing recommendations. If you grow this where do you grows yours ... sun or shade?

I bought a small pot of 5 or 6 different kinds.

Pond Chat / wind & water level
« on: March 27, 2010, 06:54:23 PM »
My water level was noticeably lower today. I checked everything, no leaks, no water anywhere ... but it has been extremely windy last night & today. Going to be next week, too.
So I was thinking it must have been the wind blowing the water from my waterfall all over the place instead of dropping back into the pond.

What do y'all think? Can strong wind cause water levels to go down?

Pond Chat / growing lotus seed qestion
« on: March 26, 2010, 03:54:11 PM »
I have 2 lotus seeds in water that are doing really well. One of them has roots. Will it be ok in the water for a couple more days?
It's supposed to be chilly & possibly rainy this weekend but then is supposed to get really nice after that next week. I just got the tub I want them in put in the ground (not very well but it's in) today & was thinking that if they can hold out till Monday or so then I could put them straight into their tub. I'd rather not pot them up into something smaller & then move them again a few days later.
They only have one small floating leaf each so far ... with another heading up.

Pond Chat / azolla hardiness
« on: October 07, 2009, 03:02:40 PM »
I'm in Okla. (zone 7, I believe) & I was wondering if azolla will come back here or if it dies away.
I also have some duckweed & how does that do here as well.

Thanks.

How do you keep your fish from eating it all up? Or do they leave it alone for the most part?

I heard koi eat it & I'm getting ready to receive some.

Pond Chat / tropical lily tuber question
« on: August 19, 2009, 01:55:00 PM »
Is a tropical lily tuber bumpy or smooth? Or can they be bumpy?

I'm having trouble explaining what I mean. LOL. I want to say like a bunch of tiny tubers fused to make a big tuber but that gives the wrong visual/impression, I'm afraid.

Do they self seed?

As in you only need one flower to get seed, every flower will give seeds?

Pond Chat / vivip question
« on: July 16, 2009, 05:05:47 PM »
I get a vivip it has little pads & a few little roots. I put them in a pot & they just sit there & don't do anything. They don't die but they don't get bigger either.

How do you get them to grow?

Should I try floating them in bags longer?

Pond Chat / Baumea rubiginosa variegata ... variegated rush
« on: July 15, 2009, 09:24:25 PM »
Anyone have this? Is it hardy in zone 7?

A local nursery had some ... she wasn't sure what it was called but thought it was tropical. I came home & did a search, finally found it but got differing information on it. Some said zone 6, some said zone 8. *Shrugs*

Thinking about getting some.

« on: July 12, 2009, 07:35:16 PM »
I'm sure this is a weed but I'm curious what it is. It just popped up.
The leaves are not serrated. Upon doing a search, it looked similar to elderberry except for the serrations.

Sorry about the pics, it was dusk & too dark without the flash but too bright with it. If needed, I can get better pics tomorrow.

to send me a vivip pad (leaf) or two from a purple like Lindsey woods or Dir George Moore?

I'd like to try my hand at growing a vivip.

Thanks.

Pond Chat / Cattail
« on: June 20, 2009, 07:04:08 PM »
Am I right in understanding that the difference in cattail & mini cattail is the width of the leaves (& catkins , of course) .... & that dwarf cattail is shorter?

Pond Chat / New frog at pond
« on: June 12, 2009, 08:42:00 PM »
It was small, maybe 1- 1 & a half inches, tan, spotted & made a buzzing sound.

Couldn't get a pic ... it was dark so couldn't do flashlight, camera & move rock slightly by myself .... I tried, he hid. LOL

Pretty cool, though.

Pond Chat / tropical lily question/problem
« on: June 11, 2009, 07:54:37 PM »
I got a tropical last year that did great.

Well, apparently I did something wrong as I lost it ... it died. Guess it didn't make it through winter.

I did get a couple vivip babies off it that survived (if you can call it that) .... they're still tiny & not growing but look alive.
They have tiny little leaves, How can I get them to grow?

They're in small pots in water outside ... I think they even have teeny tiny little tubers .... do they need to be fertilized? Should I maybe try the floating in a baggie thing? Or is it just a lost cause?

Pond Chat / Little baby red eared slider

I went out to pond today & there was a little red eared slider in it.

Anyone have one of these show up and stay?

I hope it stays for a while at least. It's so cute.
