whis4ey,
Any idea why they call it giant rhubarb?
I know it is different families but the foliage is very similiar and everytime I read about them they warn of prickly points, sharp edges and allergic reactions.
That is why even in a different family I have been wary of it.

I keep looking at that. I think it is a cool plant. However I am allergic to the regular red rhubarb. If it touches my skin I get blisters like someone has thrown acid at me. I figure this plant is just to much of a chance. As it is I get stuck regularly by all of my palms etc. etc.
Working in my yard can be a real "pain" sometimes...LOL

Pond Chat / Re: High Definition Pond

Definitely not for the dial up folks. At 140 Mb it is still a 4 minute download on my cable modem.

Very nice quality on the close up shots with quite a bit of definition. I think Windows Media Encoder was your enemy though. It was really jerky whenever the camera panned.

What type of HD camcorder are you using? How long have you had it? How much was it? Give some info please.

I am a lily guy all the way... Turtles are "Bad". LOL

We had one an hour or so drive from here about 2 hours ago. It was on the edge of the Alabam-Coushatta Reservation which is near Livingston.
Most of the ugly stuff came through during the night and early morning. We still have a chance of some freaky stuff tonight but we did not get hit as hard as west Texas.

I had spent the last 2 days digging out a new pond for my wife's Koi. It is about 1500 gallons. It was 2/3rds full by the time it stopped raining. It took two hours to pump it out so we could re-lay the liner this evening.

What is your web address? I don't see it on your profile. What formula do you use to create your rocks. I've been thinking about trying but you read so many different formulas and thought processes. Do you Hypertupha, concrete, mortar, colors... spill the info to us please.

Very pretty lily Craig. I like Islamorada but I am in the very small minority it seems so I would guess another splotched lily wouldn't get too much attention in the long term. I really like the colorsin the more mature pic. Any idea on the pedigree or is it an unknown seedling?

Terrestrial Gardening / Updated Hey Joyce - Tree ID Help Needed
« on: April 24, 2007, 09:29:33 PM »
I bought a tree at an arboretum sale last spring. It had no tag and no one seemed to know what it is. It is highly variegated in the spring. It was the way it looks in the photo when I bought it. In the summer it lost the variegation and was a solid green. In the last year it has doubled in size. It is about 5' tall now. It was just over 2' when I got it so it grows rather quickly at least in the last year.
Any ideas???

Ok, I have to admit... she's actually for my wife... She loved the big proud yellow flower. I had to buy another hardy to keep peace in the family.

Hybridizing How To's... / Re: First blooming new tropical hybrid

Hi Lou,
Very pretty color. You got any shots of a 1st day bloom? I'd like to see the stamen view or a straight on shot from above the bloom if possible. For some reason my preference is a 1st day on most lilies.
By the way , did you have any luck tubering the white one you showed a while back that is also on the front of your site?

Kathy,
It looks like there is not much compression on your jpg. For a small pic it is a pretty large file size. Try a little more compression when you create the jpg. You should be able to get much bigger shots posted, you just have to mess with the compression settings sometimes.

If you are the one of the ones who is using the resize option in window explorer I realize this is not an option.

You need to understand that the darker or less colors used in an image then that means the smaller the size will be in a jpg. If you can't get one below the 200 Kb size threshold for the pond board, look at cropping it to make it smaller before you resize it or crop out extraneous areas of the shot. If none of this makes sense to you, don't worry, just let me know what photo viewing or editing software you have on your computer and I will help you work it out. In a worst case scenario you can even crop and save as a jpg in Microsoft Paint.

I've never tried to do cuttings of my vines. That's probably why I've lost a couple. Mike do you ever take cuttings? If so I might be interested in getting a few from you.

The last shot is a special one...It is the progeny of the master... That is a pool full of Craig's creations. I can't wait for that to be in full bloom.

As you can see in this picture, not only is it evergreen and lush, it has no shyness in it's blooming ability.

I actually don't know for sure. My wife bought it as a gift for me. It wasn't even labeled as a passion flower. I knew that it wasn't a mandevilla as the label said but I planted it next to a trellis to wait for the surprise a couple of months later.
It has large flowers about 3" to 4" across. Very flat flower shape and rather heavy when you think of most passion flowers as looking lacy and delicate. A major plus for me is that it seems to be an evergreen. It never lost leaves and has been green and lush throughout the winter.
If anyone knows what variety it is I would appreciate the info for my own knowledge. Sean??? Anyone???

Kay, I'm glad the you enjoyed the shots. As I said I will have another variety in full bloom in the next few days and will post when it is open.

Joyce, The variegated one you sent me in the fall didn't make it. Any chance you have any pix of what I lost and the name so I can look for one again sometime.

I have the papilio I got from ebay growing on the front porch. By the looks I don't think they will bloom until summer here.

I ordered a set from Dutch Gardens the other day along with a bunch of other summer flowering items...
It includes 1 of each of the following...
1 Papillio
1 Elvas
1 Exotic Star
1 Santa Cruz
I am looking forward to these arrivals from Holland in the next few weeks.
