Aquatic and Terrestrial Plant Exchange / Re: Looking for toad lily
« on: June 01, 2007, 04:09:32 PM »
I have some, but they are new and not large enough to divide.  Also, not sure offhand what cultivar they are.  One thing I did want to pass on to you was that I just read a big article about toad lilies and they are saying that there is a new virus infecting them.  http://www.perennialnursery.com/tricyrtisvirus.html  Such a bummer and I hope mine are ok.  I have not have blooms yet.....

John, it is wonderful.  You are one of my all time favorite DIYers.  Thanks for maintaining such a great website too.

Looks like that bench is a great spot to sit in the shade with a tall glass of tea and enjoy the gardes.  I hope you take advantage of it often!

Joann, your pups are gorgeous as ever.  And the water clear as a bell.  It always looks so lush there and I envy the exotic garden retreat.  It is so hard to keep things green here on the zone 3 prairie.

I went on eBay 2 summers ago and bought an old gumball machine.  That is where I keep the fish food.  Planning on painting a little sign at our garden entry pergola that says: "Pond Tours 25c" with a vintage can nailed to the plaque.

Here is our gumball machine

Hi Tammie!  Are the lilies all trops?  Also, how hardy do you think the S/P Pickerel would be?
Thanks!

Jen, I have a wooden construction basement pond for winter use, and also ponded in raised ponds before we dug our large one.  I am not sure I understand your question.  Can you try again and give a little more information?

I missed this show last year and was bummed big time.  I decided that I am just gonna plan to set aside the time and go this year.  Anyone else interested??
It would be fun to roadtrip with any Montanans and meet up with some American Ponders!

Gorgeous Shubs!  I have them and love those trailing fins.  My favorite is mainly white with a bright red spot on her head over her eyes.  Her body is freckled with black spots, and she has the most gorgeous white trailing fins.

I grew up in Shattuck, OK.  Our house had no A/C.  There were many hot summer nights lying in bed with the thunderstorms brewing and the windows open to catch *any* breeze.  The sheer curtains billowed with the wind.  That is what those fins remind me of....

I re-did my HF pond lights so that I could connect them to a low voltage timer.

Here is how I did it:

1) Start with the basic HF light set up. Toss the transformer--you won't need it again.

2) Clip off the end of the light that plugs into the transformer. Strip the ends of the wires.

3) Put connectors on the ends of the wires. My particular transformer needed these O-type ends.

Just for safety sake, I have no other lights hooked up to the transformer other than pond lights, and I have the transformer plugged into GFCI

Pond Chat / The new Wakin herd
« on: September 28, 2006, 02:23:38 AM »
We spent the Labor Day weekend on a Pond Road Trip.  It was nice to get away.  We went to WA and visited Becky at Wakin Works.  What a treat to pick them out in person!!

Here is a shot of the group in Q-tank.

This is the largest of the herd--I think it is a female

The pics may not do them justice, but the red is beautiful (not orangey!)

Cheerio....so named for the perfect white circles on each side of his head

Some of the medium sized kids...

I have more pics on my Wakin Page

Happy Pondering, Ya'll!

I fixed the link so the page is uploaded now

Aquatic and Terrestrial Plant Exchange / Re: Plant trade etiquette
« on: September 19, 2006, 12:16:30 PM »
I agree.  Anything can be traded.  It is just important for all parties to know what is being sent.  Upfront discusion is the best way to prevent backside dissatisfaction.
The other thing for me is that I try not to have really high expectations.  It is a trade, not a sale.  Another ponder and I are just sharing the bounty of our ponds.  If the lily I get is small...it will grow.  Just means I have more time to kill before I have to lug it out and divide it!

Tink,
I have my water set up so that I can bypass the biofilter.  I also have a flexible 1 1/4" hose on the tank drain so that I can drain it for cleaning and winter.  I discovered that when I want to run the filter but bypass my waterfall, all I have to do is divert some of my water away from the biofilter and then drop the filter drain line into the pond too.  (I drain any dirty water off the bottom of the tank first)  Then I can run the biofilter on about 1/2 to 1/3 capacity and it still does not run fill fast enough to overflow into the waterfall pools.

RG, Myrtle and Meg luvvvvv earthworms.  As we have not had Meg long I have not tried other things much yet.  Myrtle loves fresh or frozen peas (they float!), and shrimp is a favorite.  Any green leaves that make it into their pond disappear quick.

It was so funny!  For the first few weeks after we got Meg, she hid from us completely.  I found some earthworms while I was completing their stream and sat down to feed them to Myrtle.  Meg figured out what was going on and she ate most of the worms from my fingers before Myrtle could get any.  Now when we go out to the Turtle pond, rather than hiding, Meg comes begging.  It was amazing how she went from completely hiding to completely 'there' in 3 minutes.  Wow!  That just makes me more sure that she had been someone's discarded pet turtle.  Glad she has a home now....

Pond Chat / Re: Need pond design input....please!
« on: September 05, 2006, 11:11:25 AM »
Krista, I am still kicking around ideas for the filtration flow.  I would rather not run 2 pumps if I don't have to.  When I look around the yard, and I see 1 pump in the turtle pond and 2 in the main pond, then I consider the cost of running 2 'more' pumps, it gets painful.  LOL  Maybe I need to take the plunge and get a larger external (more efficient) pump for the main....

Cath, I'm sending you big ++ thoughts!  I hope he is able to hang back and take it slowly.

My dad had the exact same aneurysm 5 yrs ago.  He had identical surgery to what you are describing and huge long incisions.  His surgeon, a very excellent one, was so confident that the surgery would be successful as my dad was pretty healthy.  I'm sorry to say that despite everything the surgery failed.  Dad is a longtime smoker and it affected the veins enough that the graft would not take.  It took 4 months of struggle but the end result was an above-the-knee amputation.

Please don't think I say this to frighten you.  Not at all.  Maybe pass this on to your FIL.  If my dad had been able to do as the Dr asked and laid off the smokes, it may have supported the site enough for the graft to take.  But instead, he only made it as far as the hospital parking lot before blazing up. &-)

Chit Chat / Re: They Disgust Me!
« on: September 05, 2006, 10:30:46 AM »
It is all so sickening and sad.  Like a plant grown in a bog of hatred and cultivated with spleen, their spirits  are so twisted and contorted.  I would have a perpetual stomachache if I had to live with the hate and anger the KKK seems to be steeped in.

Montana and N Idaho have had many troubles over this issue.  As an infertile couple, we have long planned to adopt children. Any children, of any heritage would be welcomed and loved in our home. But it does frighten me to consider what lengths some of my fellow Montanans would go to in order to spread this ugliness.

I can't stand the term 'race' being used to describe culture and heritage...we are all one race--the human race.  The fallacy is that there is a 'white race'.  I am Caucasian, American Indian, and English, but mostly Irish.  I was born and lived in California, raised in Oklahoma, and have lived in Nevada and now Montana for 16 yrs.  I have picked up a little bit of something from everywhere it seems, so that must make me a Heinz 57??   LOL
