Sorry I can't help you much with your dilema Milliemax. You might try just using a leaf net to scoop out the leaves etc. Then maybe a shop-vac for the finer stuff.

You may get more help from other ponders if you post over on the "pond chat" board .  Good Luck!

I've never had a disaster like yours and can't imagine how you felt - hopefully this ponding season you will get it all cleared up! I can only imagine the work it must take. I have a hard time cleaning up after one of my lilly pots tips over ::)

A friend of mine at work gave me a few cuttings from her plant today. She told me to invert the tops in some water with soil at the bottom and they should put out roots. Is there anything else I should do? What temp. and light exposure would it need in the house? I would love to be able to plant it in my pond next spring :)

Pond Water Quality / Re: How important is water testing?
« on: December 28, 2006, 06:49:55 AM »
I only have goldfish and have never tested the pond water. So far have not had any health problems with the fish. If I had Koi I probably would test as they are said to be more sensitive to water quality. I would be more concerned, also, if I was at the max stocking capacity for my pond. So far so good ---- maybe I'm just lucky!

frloplady, that greenhouse looks very sturdy, I'm sure it will withstand anything this winter will throw at you. Hopefully the disassembly in the spring won't be too bad!

So sorry Joyce. How old was Kleo?

We have Pileated Woodpeckers around here also. Such a beautiful bird. Quite often you can hear them striking the trees from a long way off. They have a distinctive call too. Hopefully your Dogwood will survive.

I've heard that they keep deer away too. Is it true? I sure hope so.
I planted my first ones this fall but unfortunately we've had way too much rain lately and I'm afraid that they have been ruined. I guess I'll have to wait until spring to find out :(.

Esther, what size (watt) bulb do you find most effective? I'm in zone 5 and use a 2 bulb system (the socket from an outdoor light). Right now it has a 75 watt and a 40 watt. It worked fine last winter but I'm wondering if I can just use the 75. I guess I'll just have to try it this winter and see :). Our coldest winter temps get to around -20*C which is about -4*F.

Terrestrial Gardening / Re: Any weed experts out there?
« on: November 06, 2006, 04:55:22 PM »
Thanks for the replies everyone. I was thinking about trying black plastic next year Mikey but thanks to Maryvonne I wont be wasting my time with that method. Andrew, because we are on a well, I pretty much try and use organic methods of weed control as well as the fact that our town has instituted a no pesticide bylaw. Joyce thanks for the link  (:o is right!)

What a beautiful collection you have! The fall season is really their time to shine. I especially like the combination of Crimson Queen, Kiri Nishiki and the blue evergreen - perfect!
