Pond Chat / Re: Is Perry's Baby Red lazy?
« on: August 04, 2011, 06:51:42 PM »
Perry's baby red has always been a good bloomer, but I have it in full sun and I usually have 4 tubers/pot with lots of growth, i.e. this tuber branches and forms colonies readily.

I had not heard them called swamp mallow, but rather Rose Mallow, which are quite common and found in the wild around the Cheaspeake area.  Most are white, but I have some red/pink varieties on my shoreline. Since they are just starting to bloom they are putting on quite a show with the Crepe Myrtles.  i will have to take pics next weekend.

You have a lucky neighbor.  You may want to try optical fiber for lighting, which I found does not really foul like the lights.  However, even with lights fouling usually wasn't that bad, i.e. clean them when you are in the pond taking care of plants.

Nice work.  Did you leave the bracing under the deck?  I built a couple of ponds similar to this, it looks like you used 4' on center for the 4x4s.  Did you put underwater lights?  Also the night bloomers with the serrated edge give it a nice look!

Pond Chat / Re: ***WARNING*** on planting media
« on: July 22, 2011, 04:47:06 AM »
Anaerobic decay is always special. In South Florida there is a lot of sulfur so even when water sprinklers are on you smell H2S.  To me its bad when you don't smell it in Florida, because it means you are getting to lethal limits.  With that said one way I eliminated this issue is by weekly spiking of the pots (take a tie spike and just go to the bottom of pot multiple times in different areas.  Hey I was in the pond anyway de-leafing/budding.  Note it also makes fertilizing easier too. Since then I have not had a malordorous pot up in PA.  As far as planting media I like to use a heavy clay since it supports fertilizer better, those technically inclined clays have a lot of zeolites that improves  essential metal uptake by the plants.  I will have to scan in an atrticle I read about this years ago that was in an industrial trade mag.

Yes Rich has done a nice job.  The Nelson's in Houston were an inspiration to him, but he also has some very unique hybrids.  But when I last visited him a few years back he had given up his hybridization since he had too much on his plate with his aquatic gardens and I can't remember the public garden in Nawlin's he also maintains.  Maybe Sean remembers if he catches this thread.

Mayvonne:

Beautiful bloom and photo.

Unfortunately my SLR got knocked into the Cheaspeake a couple of weeks ago with all of my lens, ouch.  Body and 2 lens shot I will miss my Tameron 15-85!  I just ordered replacements and can't wait to take pics.  I had a lot blooming this weekend white Odorata, hermine, Chubby, Wow, Crimison Red, Georgia Peach, Layderkeri Lilaca, MU, Perry's Orange Sunset, Little Sue, and Red Spider.  It's prime time in VA!

Annette:

Don't let Jerry scare you its only 3 days back and forth...straight driving though.  With Jerry, Mikey and Mike it shouldn't be too bad.   lol Maybe we could have West coast party out in Chadds Ford.

Jessica thanks for the suggestion, I will have to give Tim a call.  My other approach was to go to local dealers and swap out for things I need.

Pond Chat / Lilies, water plants and containers must go!
« on: June 10, 2011, 06:12:42 PM »
The good news we are going to contract on my PA house.  The bad news is the new owners don't want the ponds.  I find it hard to let my collection go on a trash heap so those of you in the tristate area shoot me a pm and we can set up a time to meet to get what you want.  Clearly I have already taken what I want to VA, but there are a lot of varieties  of lilies: Colorado, Sunny Pink, Crimson Red, Mayla, Peaches and Cream, Georgia Peach, Yellow Comanche, Wow, Almost Black, James Brydon, Perry's Baby Red, Hermine, Hevola, Masinello, Little Sue,  Perry's Fire Opal, Red Spider, Texas Dawn, Dallas, and others that I can't remember.   Lots of Eloda, Water Celery, Variegated Water bamboo, Corkscrew, Water Hibiscuss, LA Iris (Brazo Gold, Gamecock and Knockout).  Also lots of comets and fancy tails.

While I would like to ship, this is a once in a lifetime pick up and go offer only, i.e. I'm too pooped to do anymore!

Hey Sean:

Both Krista and you look good!  I noticed your pond is just starting to leaf out.  I hope to see more tropical pics this season!!!

We will be in Vancouver next January for a couple of days, I think 4-7, at the Sheridian before heading to Whistler.  Hopefully we can meet up for dinner our treat!  Is Maryvonne still around or did they move to the island yet?

Cheers,

Gary

Looking good Lady Gator!  it looks like you have adjusted to Texas life.

I think I have Pond envy.  I have always gone for static ponds, but then again between winter and Herons I don't have a heavy fish load either.  I take it you will have plants as wel as Koi.  Anyway I look forward to seeing th efinished product!!

Greg and Sue were outgoing, frienly and always willing to help with plant information.  It was unfortunate that finanical problems caused them to abandon the magazine as well as the website we all enjoyed.  I'm quite shocked by the news and it happened in my back yard.  My condolences to Sue and the rest of the family.

Hi Maryvonne:

Good for you...I think I need to be on that bike for the next year or so...LOL, I would probably keel over at this point.  Is Pete confused, I thought he was putting together a helicopter or is he just looking for a new toy?  Is there a landing strip on the island?  It would be fun to get one of those water planes I always see taking off in Vancouver Harbor.  I wonder if they are easier or more difficult to fly?

We are hopeful, but without luck at this point  4 months into selling our house.  the relators indicate it has nothing to do with price, there really are no buyers out there right now.  Hopefully the economy will pick up soon for both our sakes.

Good luck,

Gary

Hey Maryvonne:

Very nice, you always have a green thumb getting things to bloom in Surrey.  Is it warmer on the island and how soon will you guys move?

Hey Sean:

I'm sorry to hear about the chest pains, but there a lot of things it can be.  A few years ago I had a similar problem and it turned out it was too much yard work ( excessive branch and twig chipping) that made my chest muscle very sore!!!  But I remember EKG, stress testing with imaging, etc.  At least I  got a clean bill of health.  So hopefully ths will happen for you too.

Good luck and best wishes my friend,

Gary
