agree with Craig

Nope guys, you were not confused.
I was in such a hurry when I posted before going to work each day I mislabeled. It is actually the Terri Dunn I bought in late October. I wasn't trying to be a pain. I just was trying to do too much in too short a time. I apologize.

Hopefully I will have more pix of the real Rhonda Kay in a month or so. I think it is just starting to put up the first pads. I'll double check tomorrow morning.

I have fed them for the last 10 years. I have 4 that have returned for the last 2 years. They are territorial so there is always this air battle going on. They seem to stake a claim to certain feeders and the alpha bird tries to stop the others from feeding. I had to separate my feeders a bit so that all have a chance to feed. They also feed off the nectar from my hibiscus, firecracker bushes, butterfly bushes, butterfly weed, cannas, fuschia, milkweed, and daylilies. They also feed on small insects so in addition to being fun to watch they are also a good insect vaccuum.

Pix taken yesterday. It looks like I'll have my first Colorado bloom outside of the greenhouse in a few days. Its out of the water but right now we are going through cold stormy days so it may stall a bit. If it pops I'll get a pic.

Terrestrial Gardening / Re: My papya plants.....
« on: March 13, 2007, 07:46:58 PM »
Quote
Flowers: The five-petalled flowers are fleshy, waxy and slightly fragrant. Some plants bear only short-stalked female flowers, or bisexual (perfect) flowers also on short stalks, while others may bear only male flowers, clustered on panicles 5 or 6 feet long. Some plants may have both male and female flowers. Others at certain seasons produce short-stalked male flowers, at other times perfect flowers. This change of sex may occur temporarily during high temperatures in midsummer. Male or bisexual plants may change completely to female plants after being beheaded. Certain varieties have a propensity for producing certain types of flowers. For example, the Solo variety has flowers of both sexes 66% of the time, so two out of three plants will produce fruit, even if planted singly. How pollination takes place in papayas is not known with certainty. Wind is probably the main agent, as the pollen is light and abundant, but thrips and moths may assist. Hand pollination is sometimes necessary to get a proper fruit set.
The info came from here...

Thanks Kay.

Steve, The azolla came out of nowhere 2 years ago and has never left. I get it totally eradicated for 2 months and then it comes back with a vengeance. Fortunately it is in propagation pools and buckets. I've managed to keep it away from the ponds with lilies and koi. The darn frogs and dragonflies take it from place to place as they travel.  >:(-
It's funny, I've seen it for sale by the cupful on the net. I'd be happy to give it away if I could get rid of it all. It's really kind of neat looking but in my climate it propagates so fast it chokes off a water filled area in a matter of days. It spreads even faster than water hydrangea here.

Here are a few pix of true signs of spring.

Ooops...I just checked the pads... These are all actually Terri Dunn as well. I wondered why they had they purple tinge. I planted a bunch in late fall from vip pads. I thought it was from Blue Bird ... you see most of the pad had disintegrated. Now that I have good pads again they are all Terri Dunn. Sorry for the mislabeled pix. I reloaded with correct names.

That in itself is kind of cool since I bought it in November and now have at least 3 bloomers.  ;)

Very nice little lily. Seems to be a prolific bloomer too judging by the buds in the shot. Is it small because of it's possible parentage or that it is the first bloom on a young plant?

I got a newsletter from the Nelson's today. For those of you who had read about the Lindsey Woods story on how it was named for the young cancer patient I have an update. Mike Swize discovered it in 1998. 50% of the proceeds from the sale of the lily through the Nelson's Water Gardens. $7195.00 was raised last year in 2006. That is a total of $31,000 donated to Texas Children's Cancer Pharmacology Research Group since the lily was introduced in 2000.

For those of you who have gotten the Pond Magazine that has attracted so many new forum members, there is an article in that magazine from Anita Nelson on how to build disappearring fountains. Just an FYI for those checking out the mag.

I don't. I live in Houston so the coldest we usually see is the 20's or high teens. I just needed to keep some of the ambient water temp from leeching out overnight as we normally warm back up some throughout the day. We only had temps below freezing a 1/2 a dozen times this year. I would get home in the evening, set my electric smoker in there and plug it in for 2 or 3 hours to raise the temp inside some and then unplug it before going to bed. I am really fortunate in comparison to my ponding friends to the north. They have really been hammered this year. If I did not buy so many one of a kind lilies last year I might not have needed it but I felt it was better to be safe than sorry as I spent a lot of $$$ last year on new lilies.

Technology Talk / Re: How do I get the URL for a photo?
« on: March 02, 2007, 04:43:42 PM »
Right click, select properties and then highlight and copy the full URL. If it is a really long URL, you may not see all of it initially. Click in the address for the URL, use the right arrow to get to the very end and thengo backwards, selecting the entire address.
Be aware that since you will be linking to it, if it ever gets deleted or moved you will get the dreaded Red X box wherever you are posting it to. Sometimes it is easier to copy and upload it but if it is someone else's intellectual property please make sure you ask for permission. Not only would that be taking their intellectual property but it also takes some of their bandwidth and some people get more cranky about that than the use of their photo/ Gifs etc...
 :)
