I've had the same UPS guy for about 5 years. Every time he comes he looks around and goes..."That's new, that's new etc." He swears he is going to bring his family by for a picnic at the park..LOL.

Two more. Colorado is the one hardy that I have that is a standout. It holds its head up high for me like a tropical.

I had to go look at Sean and some other poster's profiles to figure out how they got it there. Seems helpful in giving plant advice so hopefully many will benefit from this easy how to.

Teresa,
The bulbs I bought at the plant sale were monsters. At $15 bucks each though I can't buy a ton of them. I am glad they are beginning to bloom. However... how much can you cut a bulb and still get a plant in return? In half, in quarters or even further? I might just have to ginsu a bulb in the future if I know it will result in many new plants.

Terrestrial Gardening / Stinky Bulbs
« on: November 14, 2006, 08:54:31 AM »
My UPS guy delivered some new bulbs yesterday. I ordered them 6 months ago after my wife came back from Germany visiting our oldest son. The driver's comment was that he thought he was delivering a skunk. I just ordered them. It's not my fault he drove them around warm and humid Houston in a metal box with wheels...LOL

It is a lily but the bulbs smell like an allium (onion). They say that the musky-scented bulbs repel rodents.

They look like upside down tulips with a green hair-do.

This pic is from Dutch Gardens site. Since I just got the bulbs yesterday it will obviously be next spring before I have some good pics of my own.

Ahhh--Choo...
All animals seem drawn to me. The only problem is I am allergic to cats. They always want to be next to me even in a new situation or someone I don't know. I seem to be a magnet but all I want to do is sit on some wooden furniture to avoid their fur...
This is what I look like at holidays at my In laws...  {nono}  :o  :'(

Technology Talk / How to show your location and zone in your posts.
« on: November 14, 2006, 08:19:22 AM »
Several people have commented that they do not know how to show where they live without someone having to go to their profile. I had the same problem initially. I had put my location in my profile but it did not show up. The trick is as follows...

Open your profile.
Choose Forum Profile Information
List your location, zone etc in the Personal text box. It is below the area for your personal pic and above where your Birthday and location are listed.

The cool thing about it is that if you change it or adjust something in your profile it retroactively updates all of your current and past posts.

azreno,
I am going to post in Technology Talk how to get your location to show under your name. Not trying to make you search for it but most forums don't like cross posting.

Joyce - Variegated amaryllis.... Hmmmm... would I like one.... Oh Yeah!!
Kay & Teresa - It is one of two varieties I bought at a plant sale in October. I also got a Pasadena. It is a double red with a white stripe. It will probably bloom in the next month.
This was the first time my wife was able to go with me to a plant sale. I go to at least two major functions a year. Somehow with her along I spent twice as much money. At least I can "blame" her for that...sounds good doesn't it.  {:-P;;

Here is the pic I was talking about.
I copied the page so Kit would get credit for the pic. I wouldn't want anyone to think I was posting a pic I took in this case.
Some may like it and some may not. I just like the contrast it shows.

Craig, Are you growing any of the white second day Victoria amazonica that Kit showed on the WGI site earlier this week? It really intrigued me. I am thinking about sending off for some of it's seed.
I have grown the longwood hybrid before. Is the V. amazonica much harder to grow than some of the hybrids or Back-cross Hybrids out there?
Any info you can share would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. I thought it looked enough like my ampla that it wasn't just a coincidence. I got two Director Moore's earlier this year and love the way they look. I hope to get them to tuber. It is alternating between cool nights and warm days here now so they are still producing but not as heavy as a month ago.

Craig,
My own reason for liking the vivips is that I can recreate it almost at will without going through a growing/ starvation season. I had a business license but never thought it worth thr hassle to get an Ag license. Almost $200 in fees in Tx. plus all of the red tape. I tried to contact you months ago inquiring about your lilies but since no Ag license I was not a candidate for you to do business with and I understand that but that makes it tough and expensive to get some of the harder to find lilies. I even worked on Rolf Nelson for over a year to try and get him to get me some of your stock. I finally got some through the members of this board just a few months ago. Terri Dunn is an example of the expense. It is a beautiful specimen but I had to pay full retail...$59.99 from Rolf. Having acquired 20 new varieties and species this year you can see how expensive it has been. Now if I can turn around and grow out and sell some lilies it helps offset my growing costs.

As an aside, one of the lilies I got is supposed to be your Caliente. Your site shows it as pale yellow. The one I have is white, it tinges pink when it gets cooler nights but stays white if warm. The pads are multi colored reds. I have it setting next to my ampla right now and the flower stucture is very close except for the Caliente has more petals. Can you confirm or deny if this is the Caliente?
