Pond Chat / Re: Ugh, sometimes I hate my fish
« on: May 31, 2010, 09:55:08 AM »
Oh Missa...I'm in Shawnee...got 2" of rain last night and wind.  I am a gardener/plant nut with a goldfish pond and watergarden...more plants  @O@  I feed my goldfish zucchini cut in half and floated.  They do eat the roots of my floaters.  Love them anyway.

Dan...this intrigues me.  I do have a question...this area what function does it serve for your pond?  Water does not appear to be flowing through it.  Beautiful, I look forward to your reply.

Wow...I'm so sorry about your loss.  Shade is the villain until you learn to work with it, then to lose it practically over night...Bummer.

I'll probably get BAD feedback for this, but what about the lowly and hated Mimosa or Silk Tree?  My front flower garden is on tricky red clay that hardens into something like bricks when dry.  Some friends advised me to contact a tree trimming company and have them dump several loads of chips, which I did 5 loads.  They composted over about 2 years and I now have a lovely garden.  However, I got Mimosa trees in the mix.  I hate that they seed so freely, but they do grow quickly, look tropical and provide some shade in a wide open spot.  They can be pruned into almost any shape you'd like. Just an idea.

This is the USDA home page for invasive species...you can search by type or area.
Hope this helps.

Wow...so lush.  That's one lucky duck.  In the picture with the pink rose there's a plant with tall stems and pink flowers...what is that?

I have it in my zone 7 garden...would love some volunteers.  With our weather and my clay soil...a plant has to be borderline invasive to make it!!  8)

Kat...if you cannot over winter the entire plant, you might try cuttings.  John would know more but I read that somewhere.  Deborah

Sue, I grew up in that other side of Texas.  Tall pine forest, rolling hills, and winding creeks---the piney woods.  Shelby County, the northern most county with the Sabine River for eastern boundary.  I tell people, when you look at a map of Texas the eastern border is straight then gets crooked...that's where I grew up!

I'm no expert, but I usually cheer for the under-dog....would pot her up anew, put her in a warm sunny spot and envision her flush with blooms!!  We all know the power of positive thinking.

I had a beautiful giant papyrus that I've over wintered several years.  This year after I put it outside, it declined and died.  I would like another...purchase or trade.  I have large and small umbrella grass and another unidentified grass that does very well here & is hardy.  A local pond shop had this plant several years ago, it was unmarked but I bought it anyway because it reminded me of a medium cattail.  Just found this site, my local water gardening society has disbanded so I was looking for an online group...   @O@ Happy to have found you.
