Great shots Lou,
My Lynn Ellen and Charlie's Pride are monsters right now as far as bloom size and really putting on a show here as well.

A pretty blueish purple. Small though. Not large like a Victoria bloom.
It has a habit though of blooming and self pollinating under water a lot though.

Although that is not always the case... check this shot out...

The aussies are really cranky about big temperature fluctuations.
They really like it warm to hot.
If you get an influx of cold water it can just try to go to sleep if it is not a good sized established plant.
I've had 2 plants that were blooming fine. I had to do a 25% water change in the pond they were in and they went down on me.

I've had 3 buds so far but as is often the case, the plant is stubborn about breaking the surface with them.

That first lily is a new seedling of mine from this year.
It looks a lot like N. Panama Pacific but the color shade is a little different, closer to N. Tina it's pod parent.
It's not remarkably different and it also is not a vivip so I'll just enjoy it and maybe try crossing back through it later.

The second is obviously N. Jack Wood. This painted effect is cool. I am using it as my computer background at the moment because it really caught my eye even before I snapped the shutter on the camera.
Oh BTW, the filter is called Snap Art 2 by Alien Skin Software.

Here were a couple really nice shots from the other day that I decided to try with a new painting filter in photoshop.
It gives a painted on canvas look that is kind of cool.
I am putting up the original untouched files so you can see the difference the filter makes.

Pond Chat / Re: nightbloomer with mottled pads?
« on: July 26, 2009, 09:01:24 PM »
Not mottled distinct bands of color like day bloomers.
N. Celon Pink has some flecking on it especially when juvenile.
The true N. Red Flare has some darker flecks on an adult plants pad.

« on: July 26, 2009, 08:55:18 PM »
You will probably not get anything from it.
They grow horizontally and keep on going like a Louisiana Iris does.
If it is going to split, it usually still does it at the front or growing point.
I've had 3' root stock and very seldom does anything come up from there.
Usually when you think it did, you can find another plant has changed growing direction and will kind of run over the other one.

Hybridizing How To's... / Re: Is it the same DNA or not?
« on: July 26, 2009, 10:58:45 AM »
If it is a form of vegetative reproduction from tubers, viivips etc then it is essentially a clone and the same.
A seedling is not the same in most cases.
If it is a species plant and it has been totally isolated or emasculated and covered to ensure only it's own pollen has a chance to set seed then you will get essentially the same plant.
A plant that reproduces itself exactly from seed is one of the main determinations for whether or not something is a species.

Pond Chat / Re: How many pads can you remove?
« on: July 26, 2009, 10:49:05 AM »
The biggest fear we have for waterlilies is usually killing it.
Lilies are however a lot tougher than most of us give them credit for.
I've had lilies totally defoliated by gypsy moths, assorted animals etc and as long as they had a healthy rhizome or tuber and a decent root system they always came back unless it was really adverse weather...ie. extremely cold or hot.
As Joyce described, you can basically take almost everything off of a hardy and there is enough energy in the rhizome to put up more pads as long as you do not damage the crown.

If you are timid, hack off 1/4 or 1/3 and see the results. Then you can guage how much more you want to prune with a new found confidence.

Experience was the best teacher for me. People told me the same and until I tried was afraid of killing them.

So far it is in an 8' pool and is taking all of it.
I may have to do something else soon.
I wanted it to bloom for sure but I did not plant too big as I need to control it for space reasons.
It is in basically an 18" lotus pot that is about 8" tall.
The problem is I have a 2nd plant just behind it in size.
Roughly 1.25 cubic feet. Ken grows the monsters in 16 cubic feet.
I just don't have the space. His plants get about 25' wide at that point.

Thanks Lorraine.

Kat, I run them whenever I am home to get the chance, which is not too often.
That was about 11 in the morning.
With the early summer heat blasts this year and all of the surface area I have, I have been really battling evaporation.
We've been in the 100 degree range since the end of May which is early even for us.

Did you have any new material coming up that you were watching for first blooms?
If so I hope they faired okay.

Good luck to all who bid.
Even the one's from Dr. Sam are a great deal as most of his material has not been widely introduced to the states.

The bloom on N. 'Ultra Violet' is awesome but the pads are also a killer.
They are mottled red and a sort of red/olive color... very distinctive.

Ostara is pink so that is not it.
It seems too light for Foxfire and too much color I think for Avalanche.
Did you get some of his other's that are not released yet?
I have seen pix that resemble that.
Hopefully he will chime in and lock it down.

Pond Chat / IWGS Online Waterlily Auction
« on: July 14, 2009, 04:35:01 AM »
Hi all,
The IWGS has a number of rare and new waterlilies and waterlily sets that are up for auction now.
This includes N. 'Ultra Violet', N. 'Bull's Eye' that no one has yet as well as a bunch of Dr. Slearmlarp Wasuwat's hybrids that have not been introduced to the trade in the United States.

If you are interested, the Auction goes from now until Sautrday.
Click the picture to follow the link to the pdf for more details.
It is a 549 Kb PDF file. If you bid, good luck.
By the way, this is open to all. You do not have to be a member of the IWGS to have a chance at this.

Debbie Ann is a hybrid I registered last year in honor of my wife.
Go to my IWC site to get more info.
http://www.internationalwaterlilycollection.com/The%20Plants/TropDay/debbieann.html

Extremely strong vivip in lavender shade with mauve tips.
Cold resistant. Bloomed in 60 degree temps here and at the IWC.
Longwood is growing it to see how it handles their weather now.
