Now, to answer a few questions. :)

Here is a very crude diagram of the plumbing circuits.

1. 4" bottom drain in the shallow end (1.5-2' deep)
2. 4" bottom drain in the deep end (3-4' deep)
3. Savio 16" skimmer, modified with 3" bottom drain looping under pond floor via 3" flex pvc to hole where bottom drains are currently popping out.
4. Sequence 4200 GPH pump
5. Savio 31" Filterfalls
6. Undergravel filter in bog
7. Sequence 4200 GPH pump

We may also add in some TPRs in the shallow end to direct debris toward the bottom drains. Future filtration such as a sieve from the bottom drains to a bead type filter.

I hope the bog will eventually look like this photo from a Helen Nash book. Just ordered two lotus from Craig for delivery next week!

Photo updates! 8)

Underlayment - light weight and easy. :)

Holy smokes this liner was heavy! About 360 lbs, DH and I could barely unroll it. Much easier to move once unrolled!

Bottom Drains - there are two and each is 4".

Time to fill it up!!

We've been watching the water meter as we have filled and it's about 5000 gallons right now.

Looks like we will be swimming tomorrow, regardless of temperature. Thankfully it's going to be warm and sunny with a high of 83!

Was just poking around in my container ponds and noticed that Bull's Eye, Lindsey Woods, and Ostara have all sprouted (Ultra Violet tuber was firm, no growth yet)! I kept these guys just a few inches from the surface over the winter...and we had some intense winter weather, with 4-5 days with high temps below freezing. These containers had solid ice for the top few inches for days at a time.

P.S. Bottom drain plumbing was finished two weeks ago, skimmer is nearly set, and I hope to have the liner in before the end of spring break.

Ponding life is good!  @O@

Very nice! How far below water level is the stacked stone on the inside of the pond? Do you have a photo just before water was added?

I also saw the show at Fairchild in 2006. We also have a stunning piece in one of the imaging centers at the medical school here.

Mikey, I ran out of time and attempted a corvette logo and font. It's so not my best work...but the recipient was thrilled!

She did a great job! I have not yet tackled fondant!!

Made a cute giraffe cake for a baby shower last week and am making a 'corvette' b-day cake tonight.

Are the Ostara I sent you alive in there? They surprisingly survive the winters here.

Not a tease, just brief when typing on the iPhone. If you have a dvr, set it to record the series, the episode airs occasionally.

There is a program on PBS called Nature which has a fascinating episode on hummingbirds. I purchased it on DVD from amazon for $12 or so. It really is interesting!

Good!

I mostly check in via iPhone and don't always catch the spelling/autocorrect things... Lasagna is the iPhones way of correcting Lawanna! Sheesh!!

Didn't you work in a specialty sector of the auto part industry? Any possibilities for using eBay to start up your own business? Things happen for a reason. Hang in there!!

Absolutly, LeeAnne! Water Gardening magazine brought me to the water gardening forum in about 2000 or 2001 and I have been around the group ever since.

Many thanks to the Speicherts for their contributions to the hobby. My sincerest condolences to Sue and family.

Pond Chat / Pipe for bottom drain (3" vs 4")
« on: October 12, 2010, 05:05:41 PM »
So we glued together a bunch of 4" PVC for our bottom drains this weekend. Essentially all glued joints failed. We think it's because the schedule 40 pipe diameter is just a little too small. Moving on. We decided to buy some 4" flex PVC to try to simplify things. A 50' roll is pretty reasonable from the online retailer we use; however, they are out of 4" pipe and the distributor is not going to have stock available until the spring. We have plenty of 3" flex PVC on hand. Would it be too much of a compromise to use 3" flex PVC instead of standard 4" PVC?

Awesome!!! Are you running your new sequence pump(s)? Have any photos of the plumbing/construction phase? I need to put a sprinkler box in the ground between my skimmer and waterfall and am researching how others have done it.

Pond Chat / Shopping for waterfalls. Suggestions?
« on: October 11, 2010, 05:05:16 PM »
I'm looking at both the 36" and 48" Atlantic Fastfalls as well as the Savio FilterWeir 31". We bought the savio skimmer and think it's great--quite durable. The savio filterweir looks to be of the same quality. Does anyone have any of these? Care to share photos of your waterfall in action?

Thanks in advance!

Awesome!

We finally had a rain-free weekend last weekend (first one since Labor Day) where the pond was dry enough to work on. I spent Sunday morning digging out a ledge on one side of the new pond and filled the wheel barrel with dirt as I did this. My two boys worked to spread out the loads of dirt as I dumped them behind the concrete block wall on one side of the pond (we dug into a slope). Dh worked on one of the trenches to the bottom drain, so it was great to have the whole family working on it most of the day. We're getting soooooo close to filling it (only 5 months after starting....)!  lol

We are still in process of building our mega pond....we bought bottom drains from a guy named Billy on koiphen for $25 each. He may be worth contacting for his latest deals.

Considering we broke ground around memorial day and are still working on it...and with all that you have going on, I second the suggestion of getting a large stock tank. There are some pretty good deals over on koiphen in the trader section.
