Chit Chat / Re: More dog and cat food recall....

It was in both pet food and livestock feed according to the FDA:

FDA officials believe the pet food and livestock feed were produced usingcontaminated wheat gluten and rice protein that were sold to a U.S. pet food maker by two Chinese companies. U.S. officials believe the companies added melamine to the grains to boost the protein content–and the price–of the wheat gluten and rice protein.

Now here is something that is REALLY, REALLY scarey . . . . that hasn't been publicized nearly enough:

It's possible that other melamine-spiked vegetable proteins have been used in other products such as pizzas, protein bars, and baby formula, and the FDA is continuing to investigate this possibility. In the meantime, the Center for Science in the Public Interest has called for a total ban on grains from China.

I use Scott's Weed'N'Feed and went I treat my yard, I tend to treat some of my neighbor's yard as well!   {:-P;;  {:-P;; That seems to help me more than anything...They may not like the extra growth, but I don't like the dandelions.. Needless to say, I spread an extra 10 feet to each side of my yard...

It would take a good bit more than 10 feet, but I think that might be the only solution to your problem . . . .

Maybe you should send out some cuttings of it to me and Joyce so she can ID it and I can have it!!!  Does it live in the pond?  Does it tolerate shade (could be a great beach plant . . . .)?

If you manage to kill what's on the rock, it's a start!  And when you pull the extension off and let it dry, the sa on it will die too.

They actually live in a terrarium in the bathroom window . . . . and they like it.  I'll put them in the waterfall when it gets running, at least for the summer.  Then they'll come back in, but they'll need a new terrarium as someone has claimed the jar that they are in for her own terrarium . . . .

One year we had so many swallowtails and fritillaries here that it was amazing (I grow lots of parsley and p.lutea to insure that we'll have plenty.)  The girls and I would go sit next to the plants and watch them laying their eggs . . . they fold themselves completely in half when they lay them.  I tried to get pics, but the camera I had at the time wouldn't take macro shots.  Would love to try again this year and see if I can get some good ones.  Gonna hafta go buy some more parsley plants . . . .

why the heck are they feeding chickens food for carnivores in the first place? I know it is high protein and much of it is really grains not meat but still, ICK

They didn't feed the chickens dog food or cat food, the chicken feed was also made with the tainted ingredients.

And there are pigs out there that have been fed food with the same ingredients, some have made it into the human food chain and some have been quarantined so as not to be allowed into the food chain.  But when they slaughter the animals that have eaten the tainted food, there is nothing to stop the slaughtered animals from being used as feed for still more livestock.

I'm just looking forward to the Mint Juleps!!!  Got the silver cups out and washed them this morning!

The Early Times Mint Julep Recipe

2 cups sugar
2 cups water
Sprigs of fresh mint
Crushed ice
Early Times Kentucky Whisky
Silver Julep Cups
Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Chit Chat / Re: Gas is $3.19 a gallon today....
« on: May 05, 2007, 12:07:11 PM »
I paid $3.39 a gallon when I filled up on Friday, but that's for hi test.  It's going up every week now and I guess that will continue for a while.  Almost talked my husband into a new car today . . . . he said he'd buy what I wanted when he found out that what I want is a pretty cheap car (as cars go . . .).  Gets much better gas mileage than what I'm driving now too . . . .

I remember having banana trees that produced fruit in the yard when we lived in the Virgin Islands . . . . remember trying a green one - yuk!

All I have is shady places!!!  When the pond was up and running, the waterfall was filled with moss covered rocks. . . but since it hasn't been running for so long now, the moss is all dead and gone.  I know where to get more tho and hopefully there'll be enough left on the rocks for it to regrow when I get the water moving again.  These ones Tammie sent me will do fine on the fall too, but I think since they came from hawaii, I'll bring them in over the winter . . . .besides they look so good where I have them in the window.

Hunter's moon looks like a lily I would like . . . I love the blues and especially the ones where the petals are tipped with darker blue than the center . . . not sure why I love that, but I do.  Glad to hear that the pretty little reject will have a happy home with someone who appreciates it!

The mountain land is in north Georgia and it is near Helen.  That isn't an alpine building, tho in that shot it does look a bit like it . . . it's mom's little weaving/knitting house, full of yarn and looms and needles and books and such.  It is a very nice tranquil peaceful place with neighbors that have always cared a lot about my parents.

Mom's doing fairly well.  She got pretty depressed there for a little while . . . the two nasty sisters were nasty again and she didn't think she was recovering from her broken hip quickly enough and walking was difficult, but she seems to have perked up a bit the last few days . . . we are hoping that it will continue since we've got her going to rehab 3 days a week now and all her other children are calling her more regularly.  I also gave her number out to all her friends and neighbors yesterday, so some of them should be calling her too.  Tim finding her song on the internet didn't hurt either . . . .

Mike . . . . after reading the link LeeAnne posted, I went and checked on the pet food that I've been buying.  They do own and run their own manufacturing facility for dry food.  Since Casey so loved the dry food, I've quit giving her canned with every meal.  Two of the three cats only eat dry.

Read this  . . . . they are going to start a facility to make their own canned food and have complete control over it.  Until they do, they have someone onsite watching everything that happens with their food . . . .

This is really horrible and frightening.  I have to go buy more food for my furry friends today.  I check the fda website and the manufacturer's website every day to make sure that my brand hasn't been recalled.  Beyond that I have no choice but to trust that the food is safe . . . . I worry that this same thing will happen with my brand.

174
So very sorry to hear that . . . . it's so hard to hope things will happen your way and then have those hopes crushed.  Got my fingers crossed for you . . . .

What is sad to me is that you would consider that  a throw away while I would give an awful lot to have a few flowers like that a month . . . . but that's neither here nor there.  I do understand where you are coming from and I think you understand where I come from - that, to me, is a lovely flower.

And there are not words for Cactus Jack . . . . I surely wish he would stop frustrating you and cooperate so he could have the fame he deserves.

Um, no, cattails are not my strong suit . . . . .

Pond Chat / Tammie's Moss Covered Rocks

These lovely moss covered rocks are from Hawaii . . . . not the best photos, will try for better when the sun is out tomorrow (if it comes out, forecast calls for rain) . . . .

178
if and when it gets done, I'll post some pics . . .

179
Now Tammie!  I may not be able to grow lilies (which require sun), but I can damn sure grow those plants that don't like sun . . . . like mushrooms and moss . . . . they love me and my yard!

If all else fails, give him a gift certificate for whatever he wants . . . . then let him decide what he wants.   I know it's not the most romantic thing, but hard to buy for is hard to buy for . . . .
