I found that it is easy to pull up Jerry, and I've been doing a lot of that! Unfortunately, the "roots" can go very deep and they just resprout. Our town has put in a pesticide/herbicide ban so Roundup is out but thanks for the suggestion.

Terrestrial Gardening / Any weed experts out there?
« on: October 29, 2006, 09:35:29 AM »
My yard is being invaded by Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) which came in with a load of gravel for our driveway. If only I had realized then what it was! Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of it? It has moved into the lawn and a few flower beds. I've tried picking off the reproductive stalks that they put up in the spring and in the summer picking off, burning and spraying with vinegar the vegetative growth. They seem to come back just as strong as ever. I had read that they like acidic soils so this fall I was generous with the lime. I guess I'll find out next spring. Anyone have any other suggestions other than moving :)?

No snow here yet but we had an wild rain storm yesterday with high winds. The power was out for several hours. One tree down and lots of branches. The pond is fine. Good thing the net is on as lots of leaves were blowing around. Sun is out today but still windy. Hope your weather improves and you get a chance to get your plants cut back. Good luck :).

Pond Chat / Re: Have you closed up your pond yet?
« on: October 27, 2006, 05:14:50 PM »
I cut all the plants back a week or so ago but still have the pump and waterfall going. This morning it was 0*C (32*F)  :o. I guess its time to sink the plants this weekend and close it up for the winter! For those of you that still have leaves getting through the net try using shade cloth. The mesh is so fine that even the spruce needles from all the trees in my backyard can't get through.

Joann, beautiful pic!

Hi Red..I'm in New Brunswick and we've had 2 or 3 frosty nights lately so this weekend I hope to put the pond and fish to bed for the winter. I guess in zone 3 (or 4  :)) you will need to go deeper than me to overwinter your fish safely! Good luck with the new dig. Nice pics of your fish. I wish I had a shubunkin.

Where are you located Jim and how deep is the pond? Goldfish are fairly tough and mine have made it through several winters outside in my 33" deep pond in zone 5. Looking forward to seeing the pics  :).

We had a gorgeous Thanksgiving weekend here in the Maritimes. The temps got up into the low 20's. Went for a hike to see the fall colours and got back in time for turkey with all the trimmings. Hope everyone else had a great weekend too!
