Chit Chat / Re: Trying to find garden welcome sign
« on: December 03, 2006, 09:09:26 PM »
I like a lot of Coldwater Creek stuff, but didn't know they had anything garden-related at all.  8)

Is there a particular style that you like? Country, modern, retro, deco, French Country, Contemporary... etc? What was your last sign like?

Chit Chat / Painting stinks
« on: December 03, 2006, 09:03:55 PM »
I decided to slap up some paint in the kitchen- just a quick color change. This really stinks.
All I wanted was a cheap can of paint for a change in color (it was ALL white). Of course, my better-half-groom insisted on painting the ceiling (cha-ching). And of course, some light fixtures had to be replaced (cha-ching), and the walls were a mess (must fix!), and we must vent the kitchen properly (cha-ching: stainless steel Island Fan  &-)), and why not change a few things around to make it more functional (major cha-ching)?! All that and still the same old dumb cabinet faces.  :D

So, a few minor (major) changes in the kitchen? Few thousand bucks.
Not spending time with your kids? -Priceless.  :'( >:( :(

I love, love, love those cute little mini-pendant lights...  o(:-) But why does kitchen stuff have to be soooo expensive??? Used to be one or two hundred bucks for an exhaust fan. Now, it's 1,500.00 to 10,000 for an exhaust fan! Yikes, stop the world please.... I'd rather live in a tent.  :o

Sorry about the rant!  (8:-)

Argos5, Wow, wow, wow! I'm so jealous.

I readily admit that we had great fun playing in the snow today, but secretly I'd rather trade it for your lovely pics in real life.  :)

Joyce, that looks great. Wish it was in my own yard.  ;)

Kittyzee, I don't know about "far out" on the North Fork where Joyce is, but it was my experience growing up on LI that it was all sand.  >:(

If I could, I'd get a few Elephants to stomp around on my clay front yard... what a nice pond that would make!

It's beautiful, summer or snow. I love how the cover of snow defines a pond. Everything else is gone, only the pond remains. That first snow is one of my favorite things.

What is that building on the right of the picture? Is it a part of your house or an outbuilding? Whatever it is, it's lovely.

Pond Chat / Re: FYI on O2 and well water
« on: November 19, 2006, 05:50:30 PM »
Brain Fart?  Old age?  naw couldn't be that one.... ::)

Nope, it's not age. It's that CRS syndrome. I have it too.  (8:-) Nothing to do with age!  ;) Of course, it could be that dreaded disease called OptoRectilitis. That's where your optic nerve gets wrapped around your... never mind... and you can't see Cr@p.  ;D I have that one, too.

Yes, this is a good reminder thread. Spraying or misting the water is always the best bet. Even with city water- it will help to dissipate some of the chlorine and add O2. At least well water doesn't have the chlorine to worry about, but is devoid of O2.
There have been times that I've needed to add a lot of water as fast as possible, without regard to the lack of O2 in the water. Adding an airstone cranked up on "high" does the trick.

Esther, thanks for posting your pics.  O0

Jessica, yes you are right. I'll take a pic from "way back" tomorrow. The wierd thing about the color scheme is that we have awful-colored brick in front, and a fairly new roof- so the colors are very limited. Neither my hubby nor myself were ever particularly good at picking out colors, so that is definitely the worst part.
Don't know about the door yet. I want to replace the solid wood door with a door that allows light in. It's on the North side and very dark.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  :)

I'm with tracey_shafer- your mess does not look messy at all. Very organized and logical. Thanks for posting the pics. The tile you picked is very similar to the tile my Sister has picked for her bathroom renovation. Nice.  O0

Our mess is a lot less messy today, as the (very nice) workers are cleaning as they go. They actually have a great system for cleaning up all the small bits of debris/nails/etc and it seems like it only takes a few minutes at the end of the day. It is precisely because they are cleaning as they go that they only have a tiny bit to do at the end. Got a lot of good tips just watching them.  (8:-)

LilithFair, Don't be scared. They've gotten most of the cedar off the front and found no more surprises.  O0 I even climbed out some windows and checked it myself. I was so sure that there would be lots of rot- but none! That 36 year-old cedar is warped, cracked, checked, split, and some was even peeling away. So I gotta say that it protected the house wonderfully.

Esther, please do post some pictures!

Now I'm excited. Without the rot that I was expecting, maybe we can get a new front door!  @O@

Our 36 year old house is getting a much needed facelift- new siding, gutters, downspouts, soffits, fascia. We are thinking about "Hardie Board" instead of vinyl to replace the original cedar. The "destruction" started yesterday.  :D What a mess!

We're discovering all kinds of things! There was one area that had no sheathing at all underneath the weathered cedar siding... holes... rot... $$$$$... &-).

We had some bees living in the wall of my daughter's bathroom a couple of years ago. This is what we discovered about those bees-

All in all, it was an 8' x 4" "cubby" that the bees had occupied completely.
Once they get around to the front of the house, I'm sure there will be plenty more suprises.

Timgod, that was a very interesting story. Reminds me of that little saying my Dad used to use "I used to complain that I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet".

LilithFair, I think your thoughts on life are interesting.

After reading this thread and looking at my hair more objectively, I'm thinking I need a change. The top is mousy brown, and the bottom is all different colors from being in the sun all summer. Looks silly.
I don't want to damage it like my Mom did hers, though. :o

Chit Chat / Re: Need some help - pretty please?
« on: November 11, 2006, 03:41:40 PM »
Esther, you and your husband are industrious. You are always working on a project. Good for you.

Tammie, I need my house cleaned too. It's not the cleaning here that is an issue, it's the clutter. It just keeps getting worse. Junkmail is the worst of it, yet the easiest to deal with. Yesterday I bought a 1946 McKee Glassbake Fish Baker dish at a garage sale. I know that I will need it for something... someday.

I wanted to paint my kitchen, and even got a test quart up on the wall. Now I am hitting a reality wall and realize that the prep will take a week, because of all the clutter ("collections") that need to be stored somewhere else.
And that's even before I get to prep the walls- which are pretty bad.

Fencing is terrific. I never did it, but was always a little jealous watching others do it. What a fun time.
I guess that Golf is out of the question in your climate, unless you have indoor driving ranges?

Craig - You got your first egg so you obviously have the adults. Do you raise as pets or are you looking at it as a commercial venture down the line? Either way, congrats on your first offspring. Just curious. How long does it take to hatch?

Karen J - are the bacon & sausage orders by the pound? LOL  ;D
Tim

;D I guess it would have to be! Wouldn't want an unbalanced plate. ;)

Good question, Timgod. How long does it take to hatch? Is it a viable egg? If not, what to do with it?

Mike, sounds similar like the rubber-band excercise kit I have stored in my closet. I think they're supposed to be used for something.

Bart, forgot #5.

5. The Stress Relief Bar (http://www.slashfood.com/2006/08/07/anger-bar-for-stress-relief/)

"In Nanjing, China, there is a bar than lets you vent your frustrations by throwing punches at the staff. The Rising Sun Anger Release bar is a concept that the owner, Wu Gong, said was inspired by his experiences as a migrant worker. There was no place for him to vent any anger or frustrations, but his clients won't face the same problems.

The bar employs 20 specially trained men who are outfitted with protective gear. Customers can ask them to dress up as the person they'd like to attack, whether it's a teacher, ex-boyfriend or an employer (my bold  ;)). "

Another thing I forgot to mention before is that I "suspect" that eggs can pass through multi-layered filtration completely unharmed. Bottom drain >vortex> Mechanical brush filter> leaf basket> pump> skippy.
