Pond Chat / Re: Unpotted lotus on ground.... I need help please!
« on: October 31, 2006, 10:52:33 AM »
I think Teresa has a good point- the tubers need to be protected from freezing.

Let me tell you this story. My friends put in an inground pool this year, and dismantled their pond. We went over there to check out the excavation- a giant mountain of dirt that the kids played on. They were giving me most of their pond plants when Tracey said "Hey don't we have that Lotus Karen gave us?" Sure enough, it had fallen out of it's pot and was buried in the mountain. So, Lowell pulled this thing out of the mountain with a yank and handed it to me.
I thought for sure that it was toast. It was a mess, but I didn't really need it back. I tossed it in a leaky pot and it sat on my driveway for two weeks in about a gallon of water. I finally went to drag it over to the compost, and it was growing!

So that Lotus had been buried in heavy clay, jumped on by kids, yanked out of the dirt like a vine, and left out to die in nothing but a small puddle. It bloomed better than my pampered ones!  ;)

Hey Nancy! Nice to see you- long time no see!  :)

"They fly when the weather is cooler. Why I don't know?"

That makes sense. I wonder what that magic temp is? Also,I'd imagine they can only fly when it's not too windy.

Monica, I think they do give rides. I read a story about some homeowners in  Barrington Hills who were annoyed that balloons were landing on their pricey- multimillion-dollar-rolling-hill-estates. Gosh, if I lived there I certainly wouldn't mind  that kind of entertainment. It's not like balloon riders are bank robbers or something.  :D

I'm deathly afraid of heights. Get butterflies in my tummy just imagining things.  (8:-)

What a great pic- he was posing for you.  ;)

I like them a lot. It's so much fun watching them. I've got one who climbs up my grill and licks the little grease tray.
The other day there was a Turkey Vulture feasting on one at the side of the road- I hope it wasn't my little friend.

We were cleaning out the garage yesterday and look what flew over us. I didn't have the camera for the first one, but snapped these other three. We were waving to them, and they were waving back.  8) My little guy (4) thought it was a blast- he was yelling "HI!" as loud as his piercing little-boy voice could get.
They used to fly over us all the time, but I guess the weather has to be "just right". This is only the second time I've seen them this year.

My favorite-

Joann, your clocks, stained glass, and kitchen cabinets are amazing. I'm so glad you posted pictures of the cabinets. When you said you were remodeling your kitchen, I was wondering how you possibly could make your home any prettier than it already is. But you did!

Sean, excellent job on the Cuckoo clock. That's a real beauty.
I have a question for you. How do you fix one that has had the chain ripped out?

My hubby had one that was given to him by his Mom before she died. We had finally decided that our 4 yo boy was old enough to leave it alone, and hung it on the kitchen wall. The very next day a child yanked on the chains so hard that they were in pieces on the floor. Kevin was so upset, as he had just cleaned it and got it working for all of us to enjoy. We don't know who did it, there were neighbor kids in our kitchen at the time, and it happened so fast. Nobody fessed up.
Kevin packed it away broken, because he was so upset.

I would LOVE to fix it for him.  :'( o(:-)

Ouch. I know how painful such injuries are. I had a lacerated cornea once, and it was insanely painful.
Poor kid! I'm sure it did "make" your afternoon- and your evening, night, and tomorrow.  :'( :'( :'(
I hope it heals fast.

thanks everyone :) I'm definately proud of them and how far they've come.  In fact, this week they learned to come right over the baby gates  :-\

Ahhh, what a milestone! You can finally toss the baby gates once they have figured them out.  ;D I recently removed all my kitchen drawer locks & cabinet locks because Matthew has got them down pat.  :)~ What's the point?  :D

Your Mini Men are so handsome!  (8:-)

PS- I did save the baby gates- not because of the boy, but because of the cat.  >:( :( :o

I have a beautiful emerald-green cloak that belonged to hubby's Grandma, and last year I tried to pull off a Professor McGonigall look, with the cloak, hair pulled into a bun, and a nice witches hat, but it failed. Alas, not enough  grey hair yet.  :o

I can't recommend Esther's post enough. Please take great care in where you put it, and keep it tuned.

I tune mine every 6 months, and that is bare bones maintenence. At 85 bucks a pop I wish I could tune it 4 times a year.

What kind of piano is it? Do you play? And what is your favorite piano music?

Is it your job that gives you stress? That's got to be the hardest thing to fix, and it does so much damage.

When Dr. Khiani said "Further research still needs to be done to determine whether there is a direct causal relationship." and "Dr. Khiani stressed that the study does not support total carbohydrate avoidance, a strategy promoted by some fad diets."
he was not negating the results of the study, he was ignoring them. What he should have said was "yes we need further research, but recommend that excessive carb consumption should be avoided in the interim".

Chit Chat / Re: More on GERD... for Bartman

And here's the really tragic part:

"On hearing of this study, some patients "may have more reason to think that it's a better idea to go ahead with the Atkins diet or a low-carb diet, but we don't know at this point," he said. "Further research still needs to be done to determine whether there is a direct causal relationship.""

As usual, when a study contradicts the DOGMA of the medical community, they fall back to the same DOGMA that gets them in trouble in the first place.
When the WHI study showed that popping all those calcium pills didn't do doodly ding dong for bone health and resulted in more cases of kidney stones, what did the establishment tell us to do? Eat more calcium.  ::) ?)(? :(

ACG: Carb-Heavy Diet Linked to Esophageal Cancer

By Jeff Minerd, Contributing Writer, MedPage Today
Reviewed by Robert Jasmer, MD; Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco
October 23, 2006

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 23 -- A diet heavy in carbohydrates might tip the scales in favor of a cascade of factors that lead to esophageal cancer, according to a study reported here.

The study, reported by Vijay S. Khiani, M.D., of Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, and colleagues, was reported at the American College of Gastroenterology meeting. The investigators found an association between the rising incidence of esophageal cancer in the U.S. and the increase in U.S. per-capita carbohydrate consumption over the past three decades.

Dr. Khiani and colleagues analyzed esophageal cancer incidence derived from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program from 1973 through 2001. The researchers also obtained data on American per-capita carbohydrate intake during the same time from the National Nutrient Data Bank, a program run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Although the epidemiological data could not prove a causal link, Dr. Khiani noted that a carbohydrate-heavy diet can lead to obesity, which is known to predispose individuals to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This, in turn, has been linked to a greater likelihood for developing Barrett's esophagus, a precursor to lower-esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Linear regression analysis of the two data sets showed a significant relationship between the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma and per-capita consumption of carbohydrates in the American diet (P=.0001).

More specifically, carbohydrate consumption increased from about 400 grams per day in 1973 to 500 grams per day in 2001, the study found. During the same period, the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma rose from 2,500 cases per year to nearly 15,000 cases per year.

The association held whether dietary carbohydrates came predominantly from cereals or from corn syrup, a common ingredient in soft drinks and other processed foods, the researchers found.

However, carbohydrates were not significantly associated with mid-esophageal cancer, usually a squamous-cell carcinoma, which has been linked to smoking, the study found. This cancer has been declining in the United States during recent decades, probably because fewer people are smoking, Dr. Khiani said.

The ever-increasing presence of fast food in the American diet-"burgers and fries"-is likely a factor in increased U.S. carbohydrate consumption, Dr. Khiani said, although he noted that the study did not specifically address the reasons behind this trend.

Dr. Khiani stressed that the study does not support total carbohydrate avoidance, a strategy promoted by some fad diets.

On hearing of this study, some patients "may have more reason to think that it's a better idea to go ahead with the Atkins diet or a low-carb diet, but we don't know at this point," he said. "Further research still needs to be done to determine whether there is a direct causal relationship."

The investigators concluded, "This ecological study provides evidence for the hypothesis that excess carbohydrate intake in the U.S. population may partially account for the increased trend of incidence rate of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. It is possible that obesity resulting from excess carbohydrate intake may be an intermediate link,"

I agree too its just I feel bad about upseting my mom.  But I have ot do what is best for "MY family".

Life is too short to get so stressed out over that. Let it go, & let your sister go. If your mother has any sense of decency she will come around. If not, then let her go as well. Your immediate family is the most important thing right now!

Fingers crossed for your Dad. However, please try and get a low sugar menu for him. I know I harp on that, and I appologize, but there is just too much evidence that shows glucose (sugar, carbohydrate, fructose, any "ose") to be a major factor in the progress of cancer.
