I know that all brugs have flowers, but they aren't all 10" long are they?  Those are just HUGE!!

I don't think I get enough sun, even on the patio, anymore for them.  I don't really get enough for my passion flowers and have two that haven't bloomed this year  :(   Thank goodness for the less fussy ones.

Finally!  I was having such a tough time replying.

Those hosta's are gorgeous.  I have a very shady hillside and I think next spring I'm going to try again to make it into a garden.  I did put hostas there, but dh covered them with so many leaves that they quit coming back.  I tried bleeding heart, but it never bloomed.  The ferns are doing great.  Think I'll spend the winter investigating deep shade plants and see what I can come up with.  Then I have to convince hubby that leaves need to go somewhere else . . . .

I should have clarified - it's the swamp mallow that's not hardy past zone 7.  A lot of hibiscus are hardier as well.

I haven't tried pia yet and I'd like to - just haven't gone out and bought any new plants in such a long time.

mcp - they won't survive outdoors much further north than zone 7 from what I've read.  But I have sent several to friends in Pennsylvania.  They just let them get knocked down by the first couple of frosts and then, when the plant is dormant, move it to somewhere where it won't get the worst of winter (the basement, the garage, etc).  Then when new shoots appear in the spring, they take them out again.  Since these grow each year from new shoots from the roots, you can cut each year's growth off when you store them.

Mine is about 9 or 10 feet tall, which makes picture taking a challenge.  But I do love looking out the bedroom window each morning to see it's lovely red blooms.  It's got more blooms open again today.

Dahlialama - Lavender Lady is one that I've wanted to own for a while.  It came about the same way as Jeanette and she's such a wonderful passiflora that I want her sister as well.  Perhaps we could trade some rooted cuttings?

Incense is by far one of my favorites and fairly hardy as well, but very prone to a virus that slowly kills it.  I've bought and lost many incense to this disease.  The plant I currently have is in a pot in sterililzed dirt in the hopes that it will stay healthy.

Sorry Mikey - I've been talking to several specialists about my daughter's problems this week and it's discouraging.  I had a bad day the other day, normally I would have just blown it off instead of blowing up.

It's in the pond, but the trick is that these guys like lots and lots of room for their roots.  It's in an absolutely huge pot . . . 16" across the top and 18 inches deep with holes.  I bought a tree for the yard several years ago and saved the pot - that's where my mallow lives.  There are holes in the bottom of the pot, as for most land plants, and the mallow's roots spread out thru those and down to the bottom of the pond.  I also looked at the marshes in Florida to see how they grew and they are usually near the edge of the water so their crown is at or less than 6" below the water's surface.  The top of my pot is actually about 2" above the surface, but the rest is in the water.   I don't think I've ever fertilized it - know I haven't done so in several years.

They are very disturbing and very moving.  I definitely do not think you should remove them.  I think everyone should look at them so that we do not forget what happened.  You're right.  We are getting complacent again.

Looks good, but it'll look even better if you let it keep growing . . . . then it will look like that plant is dripping the water into the pond.  Oh, but it might start dripping the water outa the pond and that would be bad.

When I was in carpool line yesterday afternoon, I had a really big (like over 4" in body length) dragonfly laying eggs on the hood of my car.  Guess it was shiny and looked like water cuz it's algae green.

« on: August 23, 2006, 07:41:24 AM »
Krista - I've got a better idea!  Get a big piece of black constuction or poster paper, a can of white spray paint and a straw.  Use the straw to blow air at the spider till he moves off the web - if you blow really hard, he'll fall.  Then take the white spray paint and spray the web lightly with it.  Then bring the black paper up from the back and the white web will stick to it.  The kids will love it - makes a great picture or halloween decoration.

Oh Man!  I do the same thing as the fetching Mrs. Mikey!  And I find them years later and think, "Hmmm, this is still a great present, I'll remember that I have it and use it for the next birthday or christmas!"  Then I hide it again and forget it again for another couple of years.  You'd think I'd learn . . . .

DD really wants me to find her gameboy and I've seriously tried to, but it's in a very, very safe place.

My apologies if I offended anyone. It's just that I have seen so many extremely bad spellers I didn't think about it maybe being a young kid. Shame on me. But you do have to admit that many teens and adults can't spell worth beans. So don't jump on us too hard, ok? :)

Sorry.  I didn't mean to jump on anyone hard or make anyone feel badly about what they said.  It's just that one of my daughters has a problem that makes spelling extremely difficult for her.  So, even tho she has a very high iq and has had a terrific education, she could make a sign just like that.

Steve - I don't think even the hardiest are hardy that far north.  But you can still grow them in pots - most of mine are in pots.  Obviously the ones in the ground are hardy for me.  Then I have some that are borderline hardy here - might be but a really bad winter could kill them.  Those come into the garage and go dormant.  Some come in the garage but I don't let them go dormant because they wouldn't come back.  A couple MUST come all the way in the house because even the garage gets too cold for them.

So, yes, you could grow them, but it depends on how much work you are willing to do for them.

Joyce - I'm shocked at you!  Where are the pictures????

Glad it worked out so well . . . . and very glad it wasn't the friend.  There are kids who will steal from their friends and I hope you and I never have to deal with the situation.  We had to deal with a family with 3 kids who routinely broke our things without regret or responsibility.  I had to sever ties with that family and it wasn't pretty.

Now I just wish I could find my daughter's gameboy.  I know nobody stole it.  I confiscated it and put it away somewhere safe.  Ya know if I could find that safe place where I put things, there's no telling what treasures I'd find in it!!!

Aren't we jumping the gun here?  Do we know how old the person who put the sign up is?  Perhaps it's a 6/7 year old and that word hasn't come up on their vocabulary list.  Or maybe it's a child with a learning disability - some of the smartest people in history had learning disabilities as children.

Call me crazy, but I think we are assuming facts not in evidence.
