Nice pictures, I love that Deco! I love anything Deco, but especially love clocks & trains. The pics from Fairchild Tropical gardens are nice, too.
Thanks for the pictorial. O0

My neighbor (who has 8 kids  :o ) tells me that they learn it in the 5th grade. And, they learn ALL of it. She said the boys come home very vocal: they've learned everything and are joking around about it. The girls are a lot more conservative: don't want to talk about it at all.

I've got a tad more time.  :'(

So that is the final product of what we saw when we visited you! Looks great.  (8:-)

We have a few Baby Black Walnuts that we've been lucky enough to enjoy from seed. It's funny where you find the seeds- on windowsills, corners, doorsills, etc. The squirrels do it.

I've fallen in love with them, what a beautiful tree!

We don't heat our house with wood, but we love burning the dead branches in our fire pit. Had a nice fire tonight with Walnut, Birch, Oak, & Cherry. I smell pretty good right now   :D.

The pics were probably lost when the forum was hacked. Maybe LeeAnne will repost the pics if we ask her nice.  ;)

Pond Chat / Re: Evil string algae
« on: September 28, 2006, 07:20:54 AM »
cambria koi, Hi. Are you the same cambria koi from the old forum?

reptilegrrl, I have the same problem.

Josh, I have used that Pond Balance (the one from Interpet, right?) before and it really did work great. The thing that bugs me is that nagging suspicion whenever any chemicals are used. Is it really safe?

From those discussions years ago on the old forum, there never was a consensus as to what actually causes string algae. It is more of a problem in cooler climates, and does not respond the way regular algae does to competition from other plants. There is some nutrient that it favors- phosphates maybe- can't remember.

John John's gave a great tip: Oxi Clean. I believe that you have to shut down circulation, sprinkle it on, allow time for the algae to die, and get it out of the pond. Killing it that way is easy- getting the dead algae out is a different story indeed.  ;) ::)

Conures can really make a racket. My sister has two, and they are the most noisy, stubborn, spoiled, feather-picking, nasty (but cute) birds ever.  (8:-) If there was a conure shrieking in your tree at that time of night, it's amazing you got any sleep at all.

Yes indeed, that was excellent "technique".  ;) Nice tree job! Glad Jamie's swing didn't get the axe.

What a nice picture. We also have a pair of siblings that used to come with Mom, but now they come on their own- don't know what happened to the Mom.

You have a very pretty garden, too.

Pond Chat / Re: What container do you plantlilies in?
« on: September 27, 2006, 11:25:37 AM »
I'll plant a water lily in anything that holds water.  :D I've got a couple planted in galvanized wash bins that I never got around to planting properly, and they seem to be doing OK.

Oil pans are great. I get the cheap ones from Wal Mart. I do wish they were a little wider in diameter, but wonder if I'd have to replant them annually anyway. The size they are now keeps the lilies from getting to heavy.

I've got a couple of Lerio lily pots that are a larger diameter, but also a little deeper and they can get quite heavy. Kinda pricey, too.

I had Perry's Baby Red that I kept in a kitty litter box for years and years. The pot finally broke this year. I was actually sad.  :D

Pond Chat / Re: Water Hyacinth
« on: September 27, 2006, 11:18:10 AM »
Milliemax, The Nitrite reading you posted (caution) is too high. Bad for the fish. Keep a close eye on the fish until the biofilter catches up. Is it a new filter?

Water Hyacinth is a tropical, so it likes heat, light, and poo.  ;)
I've had years where it didn't do well, but given some fishy-poo water and full sun it usually recovers.
My pH never varies from 9.

Perhaps one critter was trying to eat the eggs or young of a bird. The bird was screaming to try and scare the critter away.
??? Just an idea.

It's kind of late in the year for that, though.

Tammi, scroll up- the avocado story is above.

Teresa, All I can say is YIKES.... I'm glad she's gone.
Honestly, I do think that people like that take advantage of people like you, because somehow they sense your decency and niceness, and they know you will not say anything. They will try and get away with whatever they can.

Maybe you can find a "No Vacancy" sign to hang on your door Oct 18.

I like Dave's Garden. I registered, but not at a "paid" level. While I agree that better info on specific plants can be found elsewhere, sometimes Dave's has more pictures to browse. It's a fun tool, but not the only one in the toolbox.

I'm sorry Jerry & Sean. You guys have been through a lot for this forum, and it's despicable what those criminals did. I hope they get caught & prosecuted.

Wow. That really is a right of passage!

:'( I know I'll cry when my daughter starts with that.
She normally can't stand putting anything on herself. Not even moisturizing lotion or hair conditioner. I wonder how that's going to play out.

Teresa, I was pretty worried that something like that might happen, but it didn't.

Whew. We survived! What an incredible mess. I'll have to remember next time not to go so crazy cleaning beforehand.  ;)

Chit Chat / Girly girl sleepover party
« on: September 22, 2006, 07:54:26 PM »
OK, I am in the midst of a girl sleepover party. All the girls are in their PJ's and screaming. They've had the pizza, the cake, the pinata. Laura (my DD) is extremely tired and complaining. Everyone else is having fun.

Like my Dad always said, "anticipation is greater than realization". The poor girl is exhausted from being too excited. She got up at 6:30 this morning and has been jumping-up-and-down excited all day long.

I've been running around all day preparing, and am ready for bed. No bed for me! No soup for me. No bed for me.

But I got some cake.  ;) ;) ;) :D ;D O0 (8:-) Worth it. o(:-)

Hey, Cath! I'm the same!!!

<h2>I'm a Mazda RX-8!</h2>

<p>You're sporty, yet practical, and you have a style of your own.  You like to have fun, and you like to bring friends along for the ride, but when it comes time for everyday chores, you're willing to do your part. <p>
Take the Which Sports Car Are You? quiz.<p>

That was cute.

HOWEVER, I think I am actually a Honda Odyssey.  ;)

What a beautiful plant. I'd really hate to lose such a beauty to winter. Can you pot up a piece of it and bring it inside?
I was able to winter a Star begonia last year, and hope to do the same this year.
I am totally not ready for winter, much less fall.

The first pic is most interesting. So many shadows & contrasts. I love that photo.
Great lilies, too.  :)

Croft, Interesting point! I've often wondered how moss could grow on a rock in full sun (my pond), never thought that it could be the surrounding moisture that's keeping it alive.
