Wakin, Shubunkins and Goldfish... / Re: My herd of mutts
« on: October 06, 2006, 04:05:51 PM »
Beautiful goldfish! I really envy that crystal clear water you have too :)

I would have made mine bigger too and made the sides vertical to give more room on the bottom for plants! I would have put in a real bottom drain (not the retro one I have now). I also should have put in a skimmer but I guess that I can still add that without too much trouble  :)

Just beautiful  :). I wish that I could grow those tropicals!

Your landscaping looks so lush, you're lucky! Have you thought about purple cone flowers (Echinacea) for that space - they have a long bloom time and similar color or how about garden mums (Chrysanthemum) for fall color. Both are nice plants but not exactly pond themed :). Astilbe would be another good choice and it loves moist, well drained soil although it blooms early to mid summer. Best of all I don't think bees swarm any of these flowers at all ;D

Tinkster, this pic shows the edge of my waterfall. The upper rock has moss on it and the lower one some algae. The moss is not in the water at all, just growing in the moist air that surrounds it. The algae is growing in the stream of water. The moss has survived 3 or 4 winters in that location and I also shut down my falls for the winter. Sorry I can't help you on growing the moss because it was on the rock when I placed it there.

Killing the beneficial bacteria in the biological filter is what I would worry about too. I have to shut down my pump for about 1 hour while I clean my mechanical filter (so no water going through bio filter either) and I worry that amount of time is too long. I'm trying to speed the process up though ::)

Welcome back :). Hopefully you'll have much better success with this new pond! Most goldfish start out a dark olive colour for camouflage and turn orange as they get older...some later than others. You just may have to come up with a different name for shadow  ;)

Your daughter did a terrific job in creating her container garden O0. How did she keep the water in it from getting too warm for the fish - that would be the problem on my deck.

Pond Chat / Re: Source for pond netting
« on: September 05, 2006, 05:07:42 PM »
Eija, I also found that smaller leaves from all my birch trees were getting past the deer netting so two years ago I switched to shade cloth. Its mesh is fine enough to stop even the needles from our spruce trees! It's also UV protected for up to 5 years, I think. I weigh it down around the edges with rocks and support it in the middle with inflatable pool toys such as inner tubes and balls.

I get it mail order from Lee Valley.... don't know if they are in the States but shade cloth must be available at many other places.

Good Luck

Just heard that there's been a recall on some Dell batteries in some of their laptops. Sorry don't know any of the details. I'm sure that their website would have all the info.

Great pic! Love the variation of colour in your lilies. Wish I could grow tropicals here but the water doesn't get warm enough :(

« on: August 13, 2006, 04:42:10 PM »
My day wasn't quite as perfect but a good one all the same. We have lots of birds and squirrels in our yard - those hummingbirds always seem to chase each other don't they! I think they do it just for the fun of it sometimes :).  We don't seem to have many butterflies this year although I did see one Monarch today on my butterfly bush. Is that red flower Maltese Cross?
