Well... you could have 6 cats, as we do, and 5 litterboxes, and need to buy stock in paper towels! :D  There isn't a day that goes by that I don't need to clean up a "present" in at least one room. :P  Some days I feel like it's never going to end - the 2 sister cats are long haired too! :o

That's a good size plant bet you'll see blooms within a week or two, the flowering stalk emerges from the stalk of another leaf so if you notice any fatter stems it won't be long before the flower shoots up

WOW you are good Michelle!!! O0  Fourteen days after I posted and I just saw about 6 buds on the pickerels - 2 are about to come into bloom! So exciting! @O@

Thanks for all the helpful info!  When I received these cuttings, my friend had aslo sent me a wonderful mix of bark and other goodies that she uses to plant her plants in. The cuttings had had several days to dry out in transit from Texas, plus I let them sit another few days before potting them up.  They are firm and look ok - they just aren't growing, and are a palish green.

I did a search myself yesterday also and read that they bloom when they are not happy - rootbound - and even when they are paler in color, so I'm not going to worry about that any more.  Plus I read to cut the longer stems back to encourage growth.  I did notice that one of the stems that had broken a year ago has a small new leaf growing out of the bark mix - YEA!!! @O@  I had potted up the broken piece last year into a smaller pot, and that goes out on my porch in spring/summer - it gets full morning sun and is greener and growing a bit.  I don't like putting my indoor plants outside too much, because I usually end up bringing in some bugs despite being careful to spray them before bringing them in in the fall.

Again... thanks for all the terrific info!

We have lots of good hiding spots for the fish, yet last summer and fall he still got away with quite a few fish.  My husband bought a long piece of black PVC pipe and cut it into 3 sections and put weights on them to keep them from floating up, we also got an elbow piece of PVC, we have a very large clay pot that had broken - he was able to cut it in half and the fish love to be under that, I put a strawberry pot in last summer as well, and also plants for them to hide under, as well as an inverted metal basket that they can swim in and out of safely - looks like a golf ball basket from the driving ranges  Hiding spots are not a problem in our pond.

And yet it comes, and does its damage. :'(

Sorry I can't help, but my husband pulled a dead baby garden snake out of the waterfall skimmer a few weeks ago.  We have a bottom drain - I never even saw it in the pond!

Just saw the great blue heron flying over my pond honking away! >:(-  Glad I happen to be looking out the window as he soared overhead - I made some noise and he kept on going!  O0  For now... :o

When I got them from Annette, I put them in small drainable pots with about an inch of each segment stuck into the dirt.  I tried to keep them moist, but not overly wet.  (They DO dry out between watering a lot tho')  and they are in an east window.  They get morning sun, and I worried about that since they DO NOT like hot sun.

Mine looked shrively at first, but I could tell when they started to root, the green color deepened and I met resistance when I tugged on them in the soil.  The little roots were holding them tight.   :)  Hope this helps!!

That's exactly what I did with mine, and they are also in an east window.  I guess I have to be more patient. ;)  Thanks for your response!

Annette - that bloom is GORGEOUS!

Very nice hostas!!!

A few years ago, I gave my dad a few small divisions of mine for his backyard.  Since that time, he has been dividing them and now has his entire perimeter of his backyard lined with huge, gorgeous hostas - 3 sides of their property - I am in AWE of what these plants can do in the right location!

LuAnn! Please tell me your secret!!!  I received a few cuttings from an online friend about 3 years ago.  They are just sitting there doing nothing.  No growth whatsoever in 3 years.  They also look a bit anemic.  They are firm and not dying, but light green and not growing either.  They get early morning sun because that is the only space I had left by a window - I am a plant addict! :D

I have tried Superthrive, and another plant fertilzer - still no growth.

Help?!?

Love that strawberry pot of hens and chicks, Luann!

I have a strawberry pot that someone was discarding on my street years ago when they moved out - it's in perfect condition BUT... it's one of the older styles where the side holes are flush with the pot sides and the soil pours out every time I watered it.  After trying to grow plants in it for years, I finally put it into the pond last summer, so my fish have another place to hide from the heron, and also a fun place to swim in and out of with all the holes! Awwwww - you can have some too - they are sold in many places around here - I get most of mine at Home Depot - you just have to keep looking for them when you are plant shopping.

Here are more of mine today...

These have been in this frog planter for about 3-4 years now.

A cluster (clump?) of some that turn red during fall/winter and then green up again once it stays warm/hot.

Another cluster in that garden

This one is called "cobweb" hens and chicks - you cannot see it in this picture but there is a very fine "thread" that goes around the rosettes.

Kat,

Before frost in the fall, make some cuttings and some people just stick them in water in the window until rooted.  That way they don't take up as much room, at least until you are hooked on the genus...

This is exactly what I do - I take some nice thick trunk cuttings and put them in a vase of water - they stay in there the entire winter by a window and root very nicely.  So long as they are kept in water they stay alive.  Most years I get spider mites on them pretty badly and lose all the leaves, but they leaf out nicely once they are planted outside again.

I am so glad everyone is joining in here and posting pictures of their hens and chicks - thanks! 8)  I have some more that I will get pictures of as well.  They are addictive, aren't they?!?

Kittyzee - I am in the same zone as you are, and I've been able to overwinter most of mine.  A few have been more finicky than others, but for the most part they do well.  I had one in a spot under a butterfly bush for 3 years - it never got larger than the original 3 small pieces.  This year I moved it out into more full sun and it's growing like gangbusters already!  I wish you much luck with yours. I am pretty sure it's not from spawning - unless they spawn every single day, which I am not seeing!  I do believe it's from DOC, but why does it foam more in the morning when it's cooler out?

Yes - comets and 1 koi.  They were spawning up a storm a few days ago but not that I've seen since.  It seems to get more foam in the early mornings especially when it's cooler out.

I was wondering why our pond gets this foam every morning?  It's usually worse on cooler mornings, and disappears by mid-morning.  We have a UV filter in the skimmer, and another filter up on the waterfall that is fed from a bottom drain.

Joyce - is it hardy where you live?  I know you are in a slightly warmer climate than we are here, so I was wondering?

Your flowers are all so colorful and pretty.   o(:-)

Your red flowers are dianthus.  I have  pink ones that return here in zone 6, even though they are sold as annuals here too.

I would send you a PM, just one question - are they hardy in zone 5b? (Oh, please, please!   lol )

They are not hardy here in zone 6, so they would not be there.  I have to bring mine indoors - I take cuttings from most, but do bring in the main trunk of Charles Grimaldi because that is the one that grows the best for me.
