Keep it in a shadier spot and it doesn't turn peach . . . it has peach tones at the base of the petals, but it never turned peach for me.

I have a little book about caterpillars and here's what I think (not an expert tho)

That is either a 'yellow bear' which turns into the virginian tiger moth or, more likely, it's a salt marsh caterpiller (name doesn't indicate where they are found).  Salt marsh caterpillars tend to be a pain for farmers as they disperse widely and eat anything and everything.

The problem is that both of these guys can vary in looks.

I thought about cutting the limb off that is broke and sticking it in the edge of the bog to see if it would take roots .  Think I will try to do that and then see if the other big branch will scab over and live or produce other branches.  I have never seen a red/fuschia one.  I guess it it mandevillas.

tinkster

I don't think I'd put it in the bog . . . . too much water and it might not grow or root.  If you want to root it, get some rooting hormone to use on the branch and some perlite or vermiculite or sterile media to put it in while it tries to grow roots.  Then make a clean cut on the branch and dip it in the rooting hormone.  Insert the branch in a pot of moist sterile mix.  Then cover it with a clear plastic . . . . with small cuttings, I put them in the large (2 gallon size) zip lock bags and zip them shut to keep the moisture in.  Check it to make sure it stays good and moist, but don't drown it.

Seems to me that if the leaves are still that green and not wilty then the roots are providing them with something.  I might just leave them and let them grow . . . . they will probably send out new branches from the stubs at the bottom and the tops may continue to grow also.

Barbara is one of my most favorite lilies . . . . she's pretty, she has big flowers and she blooms often and most of all, she's shade tolerant!!!!  I've lost my last Barbara.  I don't think I have enough sun even for her on the pond anymore and she's much too big for a patio pot.  Enjoy her for me and post some photos of her when she blooms.

Pond Chat / Re: Baby Red Ear found in skimmer filter
« on: May 01, 2007, 05:57:10 AM »
The baby probably emerged from the nest and found your pond before he found whatever body of water his mother lives in.   Female turtles will climb uphill to lay their eggs.  Turtle eggs are permeable and if they are submerged in water, they can actually drown (That's why female turtles MUST have access to dry land).  The turtle will travel quite far to lay her eggs above the 100 year flood level and the babies must then travel that far back to the water.  Their instinct tells them to go downhill, but there is nothing to tell them which direction to go other than downhill.  They will often stop at the first water they find and that isn't always a natural lake - could be a pond or a swimming pool or even just a large puddle.

And yes, the litte bugger did probably scramble into your pond.  You may not see him for a while tho as his very survival depends on his ability to hide from you and the snakes and the frogs and the birds (even a bluejay will take a baby turtle).  The more plants you have in your pond, the safer the little guy will be.  And he won't do much damage this summer . . . he might eat a few baby fish if he can catch them, but mostly he's going to live on bugs and such.

Pond Chat / Re: Do you know what kind of fish, and snail these are?
« on: May 01, 2007, 05:51:29 AM »
If the fish are only 4" long after 3 years, they aren't orfe.  Could they be dace?

And as for the snails, are the eggs in or out of the water?

My daughters have a couple of walking sticks very much like that . . . . but not nicely carved on the top.  They don't use them, but I love to use them!

Did you find anything Barb?

We have a towhee who knocks on the front window - endlessly - in the spring and summer . . . . he's done it every year for about 3 years now (maybe 4?)

My youngest daughter likes to stuff dryer lint in mesh bags and hang them in the trees.  She also takes the scrap end bits of yarn I cut off things I'm knitting and hangs those from branches for the birds.  They all dissappear quickly in the spring . . . . .

It's all over and done with and we struck the set tonight.  It took 7 weeks to build and was very impressive.  It took 3 1/2 hours to completely obliterate . . . including painting the floor so nobody can tell it was even there.  Kinda sad.

It was a great show and a great run . . . there were a few little things here and there, but most weren't noticed by anyone but those on the stage and the ones noticed by the audience were handled very well.

DD had a fabulous time and I think she's found a new love . . . the stage . . . . this may or may not be a good thing.

I'm so sorry Mike!  It's awful to think you've done right by your furry friends only to find out that someone else is screwing with them!!!

I switched all the furballs to California Natural . . . found a store near here that has several brands that were on the 5 star and 6 star lists from dogfoodanalysis.com . . . . picked it over innova because of the lamb and rice flavor which is what Casey was already on.  She absolutely loves it and since we started her on it, we've been able to eliminate the canned food altogether (she wouldn't eat the old food without the canned and this she happily eats with no canned food.)

I sure hope that Bear and Andy suffer no ill effects . . . .
