Congratulations!
It's a beauty. Just what I'd be aiming for.

Cheers,
Sean

hi sean,
thanks. i do like this plant, although the pads are rather common looking. there are times when i like plain green pads to mottled, this is one time.

i have about 10 plants ready to bloom. will post more photos when they are ready. and as usual, i most always miss the first day bloom. i had a peach colored bloom for me the other day about 10 days after the bud surfaced. one does not know on the first blooms

Hi Lou,
Very pretty color. You got any shots of a 1st day bloom? I'd like to see the stamen view or a straight on shot from above the bloom if possible. For some reason my preference is a 1st day on most lilies.
By the way , did you have any luck tubering the white one you showed a while back that is also on the front of your site?
Tim

hi tim,
as fate would have it, everytime a bud opens up, i am at work and i miss it. i will continue to wait for the first day.

i did tuber the one on my web site and am waiting for it to sprout. it appears to be a good tuber, but its late.

thanks for looking.

Hi everyone,
here is the first plant to bloom this spring. this actually is a photo of the third bloom. each bloom got a little bigger. the pod parent is raspberry sorbet and the pollen donor is a multi pink from last year. i counted about 45 petals. the color is fairly accurate, more red than pink.

i had a hard time with this years batch of seedlings, mainly rot and fungus because of the extended period we had of cloudy, cold and rainy and dank days. as soon as the sun made its appearance again, the lilies in the greenhouse took off. the greenhouse temps in the cloudy days was a steady 70 degrees with the water at 80 degrees. as soon as the sun came out the temps went to the high 90's

the bloom looks like it might be in the 6 - 7 inch range when mature. the pads are a plain green.

for me, it takes about 6 months from sowing the seed to first bloom. most of the seedlings life is in the basement where its usually about 45 degrees in the winter. the tanks are heated and supplemental light for 16 hours a day.

Hi Louis:

Haven't seen many posts from you...I thought you may be in depression with our extended winter!  We had some flooding here as the Brandywine and Delaware crested!  Does anyone know what Cubit is?

Gary

Hi Gary, nothing to really say. I lurk a lot. I looked up  Cubit also, i was planning on building an arc if the water did not stop rising. A Cupit is the measure from a man's hip to the fingers of the outstretched opposite arm.

I could see that they would have problems with antique boats. no two arms are the same.

Boy, this has been a duzy of a storm. since yesterday (sunday) at 10am, we have had 8 inches of rain,. the lake i live on has risen 4 - 5 feet so far and will continue to rise until thursday or friday. just glad its not snow, if is was, it would have been 80 inches of snow. 1 inch of rain = 10 inches of snow.

i need spring in the worst way :)

Hi Lou, Is that because your pond is not deep enough? Cuz them buggers can take a lot as long as it doesen't freez solid to the bottom!

hi debbie,
i lost all my koi several years ago on a 3 1/2 foot deep pond that froze almost to the bottom. too cold here.

goldies can and will get very large under the right conditions. i had two goldies that were 15 years old and both were about 20 inches in length. i had them for 10 years and a couple of years ago, one started to turn white and eventually turned all white and the other stayed orange. the white one died last summer, from an unknown ailment.
take a look in this photo and the orange fish towards the bottom is the male of the large goldies pair.

its heartbreaking to see this photo with all the beautiful koi, they are all dead now, lost them a few years back during a brutal winter.

no more koi for me.

It has been a month, Louis.   How are the babies doing?   :)

hello marilyn,

i had some fungus on one tank that i had to treat, they are coming along slowly, however other tanks are doing nicely with some pads about 5 inches long. i have to put them in the greenhouse next month.  this is fun

Lol....what we have here is known as an 'off label' use.

I think removing the cover will do as much to eliminate the problem as anything.  100% humidity and a no doubt constant drip provides fertile fungal feeding grounds.

I also don't think adding it to the water doing much to help.  Most fungicides need constant agitation to stay in solution,  the particular one you mentioned is designed more for a foliar uptake and there is a threshold for effectiveness, .  So if you are adding it to the water at a less than recommended concentration odds are greater that you are developing resistant fungi than that fungicide is actually doing any good.  If you have to use it again, mix it at the highest recommended concentration and thoroughly spray the pads, but I wouldn't suggest adding it to the water.

I would not be surprised if the constant exposure to even the low dose in the water caused the leaf deformities.

hi craig,
yes the constant drip, i am sure did not help things.

i will try  your recommendations, which make much sense.

i will keep you advised, thanks for the help.

I have to cringe a bit here as I ask....what fungicide are you using?  It might not only be solving your problem, but distorting your pads.

Are the tanks covered?

hello craig, thanks for answering. cringe no more.. :)

yes the tanks were covered, at least by 80% by a cover, i just removed them when you mentioned it. i have always had the covers on to hold in the heat. that in itself could cause a extreme moist environment

and the fungicide i am using is a very mild solution of a broad spectrum who's main ingredient is:

CHLOROTHALONIL

what are your thoughts.

I posted this as a reply to one of Sean's posts, but thought i would bring it to the top for more discussion:

In one of my seedling tanks, i noticed that almost overnight, pads were rotting from fungus. of course i panicked, too much time and money goes into this extravagant hobby of mine. i picked all pads that were bad and introduced a small amount of fungicide into the water and have been spraying the pads with a light solution of the same.
it seems to have stopped for now but some of the pads are slightly distorted, not sure why.  the other tanks are fine. hopefully i can get them all out into the greenhouse next month.

I would appreciate any help i can get on this problem. last year i lost a batch of seedlings in only a few days to the rot.

thats a fine looking bloom, craig. good luck with your seedlings. how long before you will see a bloom from that batch.

thanks for the encouragment!  I pretty much am so lost in my ponding and gardening now that I just slap my stuff on ebay the quickest way I can now. The fun it out of that for sure.. its just a job.. but I was intriqued at one time with animation.  I love to take friends pictures and animate them into something funny.. got pretty good at that.

I would love to get more into the photography of my ponds.  I can never get my pictures to look good like yall do.  I did recently buy a new Cannon sd700 and hope to figure out how to use it soon :).  I missed being in the ponding magazine because my pictures werent are good enuff quality.  I hope this camera will do good enough.. the reviews on it was good.

I would really like to see a thread on this forum with nothing but photos.  When I first started the idea of building pond/ getting into gardening, I found the old awg and it had a huge thread with nothing but pictures of ponds and lilies and its what keep me there.. I think so many are looking for photos/ ideas/ inspiration and it gives us people that dont have a clue if we cant copy something, IDEAS :)  I keep looking at your pictures last year and I keep fighting the urge to try tropical... I just need to focue on getting what I have done right first before I move on to them.

Tinkster

you have purchased a good camera, i think it might be a good idea to start a thread in the spring on the best ways of photographing lilies and ponds.

I bet it has.. I do ebay and struggle with simple html and then you come out with something beautiful like that!   Makes me want to try harder to learn it :)

tinkster

hello again tink, there is  wealth of info on the internet. when i wanted to do a site with virtual tours, it took me all of a couple of weeks to learn to do it. there are times when i just cannot grasp some technical item and then all of a sudden, the solution appears. keep at it, its lots of fun.

Hey lou,
I love the site as well.
Is the hybrid on the front page with the javascript as snowy white as it appears? Any chance you are gonna release it anytime?
Tim

hello tim, the hybrid on the home page is one of a kind. right now its a tuber and i hope it makes it through the winter. so far, it looks good and firm. thanks for your interest. i hope to propagate it this year, if the pond gods are willing.

Louis, I loved your site. The rippling water was so impressive, let alone the pix of the lilies and tall ships etc. I especially liked the Cuauhtomic. Oh dear I was making a point of remembering how to spell it and now I'm afraid I didn't. But you know what I mean.

hello esther,

don't feel bad, i cannot even pronounce the name. she was one of the most beautiful of all the tall ships. we approached her at mooring about 3 miles off shore at 5:30 am and when we got within a half mile, we could smell the breakfast the Mexican sailors were making. it was wonderful.
