Roark, of course, is entranced by the bouncing boobies... (sigh)

And your point is....???   lol lol lol lol

I'm sorry to tell you, Sav, but even my DH (who has like stage 4 dementia/Alzheimer's and is 80 years old) would be doing exactly the same thing.   {:-P;; ;D  They never outgrow it...(sigh)  :-\

Chit Chat / Re: LeeAnne, About Fresh Produce
« on: May 20, 2008, 07:23:04 PM »
Shanna,
The Green Bags don't have slits in them, and it's better not to let them get holes in them.  Here is an excerpt from the Debbie Meyer site I ordered from:

"THE STORY BEHIND THE BAGS
Scientists involved in Antarctic exploration were searching for ways to prolong the freshness of produce. During their research, they found a region in Japan where for thousands of years farmers have been storing produce in mountain caves with amazing results.

The caves were dark, consistently cool, and dry. But it was discovered that the key to the remarkable preserving properties of the caves was a clay called "oya," and the cave mountain was made of it. The oya absorbed the ethylene gas that produce gives off as it matures. Green Bags combine ancient knowledge thousands of years old with space age technology for preserving produce.

DEBBIE MEYER™ Green Bags® FAQs

How do DEBBIE MEYER™ Green Bags® work?
The DEBBIE MEYER™ Green Bags® absorb the ethelyne gas that is released by the food, which prevents the gas from staying in the fruit, and thus helping your food stay fresher longer.

What is the natural mineral that makes DEBBIE MEYER™ Green Bags® work?
Oya™ mineral form of Zeolite.  This mineral is all natural and 100% non toxic."

You can check them out at www.greenbags.com.  The site says you can keep some things 10 times longer, but I haven't done that yet.  I did keep a bunch of green lettuce for 24 days before I used the last of it.  Also, the bags can be reused 10 times, after which I would guess they start becoming less effective.  They are coated on the inside with the clay (it doesn't come off on the food, tho), and you just wash them with hot water...no soap.

Karen,
I usually just wipe or blot the food with a paper towel.  On the leaf lettuce or romaine lettuce bunches, I just blot them the best I can and shake the bunch upside down over the sink.  I'm sure a salad spinner would make them last longer if I would just take the time to do it before I put the lettuce in the bags.  {:-P;; You have a point about the broccoli probably having more water down in it...maybe try drying it upside down on paper towels for a while before storing it?  I haven't tried counting the days on broccoli yet.  I need to try that and see if it does as well as some of the other veggies.

Well, there's my commercial for today!!  lol  I swear I don't have any stake in this company and have to pay full price for my Green Bags.  I am just impressed on how well they work!

I'm not sure why PETA would have a problem with you, anyway.  Are they saying you're harming these birds by letting them fly???  ::)

Carver,

They are called Debbie Meyer Green Bags.  I'm not sure all WalMarts have them, but our supercenter does.  They will be in the "As Seen On TV" section.  My printout from when I ordered mine over the internet also calls them "Green Bags Foodsaver Bags."  I hope this helps.   :)

WOW, I just looked at your website!   You have some very nice ponds, and I can hardly believe those deer are eating out of your hand.  What did you do to make them so tame?

Chit Chat / LeeAnne, About Fresh Produce
« on: May 18, 2008, 09:23:20 PM »
LeeAnne, I noticed on Joyce's thread that you said, "I compost a lot of fresh produce because we buy too much at once and don't get it all eaten before it goes bad."

That used to happen to me a lot, too, because I buy a lot of fresh produce for DH's "heart healthy" diet.  (I eat it, too.  ;) )  I tried the "Green Bags" advertised on TV, although I bought mine over the internet.  They really work!!!  O0  Although if you watch the infomercial or read the info on the internet, you might have a tendency to say, "Yeah, right!", they really do work, and I can keep salad fixings at least twice as long...sometimes three times as long.   I know that because I wrote down when I bought the produce (lettuce, roma tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, carrots, etc.) and then noted the date when I used the last of it.  We don't get to the store often because of DH's dementia, so I really needed a way to cut down on the amount of veggies and fresh fruit that I was throwing away.

The Green Bags are now available at Wal-Mart (cheaper than I got them over the internet because of the $7.00 shipping), and I will buy another set one of these days.  You can use them 10 times before they start to become ineffective, so I mark mine with a permanent marker each time I use them.  I can now buy more fresh produce at a time and I don't have to waste much of it...unless I overestimate how long I have had it.  Just be very sure that the produce is DRY when you put it in the bags, as it will spoil much quicker if it is wet.  Don't wash any of the produce before you store it...wait until you use it to wash it.

Debbie, I don't know about sexy, but that sure is a cute little car!  O0  I would consider switching to a smaller car for the gas mileage...although I do love the trunk size on my Intrepid.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your new little Jetta!!   @O@

I hope your yard sale is very successful.  I sure need to have a BIG one.   lol

Chit Chat / Re: Juvenile weight problems
« on: May 17, 2008, 01:05:54 PM »
" Healthful foods are expensive."  That's sooooo true, Karen.  I try to feed my DH a heart healthy diet...and have found that fresh fruits and vegetables ARE expensive.  Fortunately, that's not really a problem for us right now , but I do have a HECK of a grocery bill for just two people.   :(

Sunbeam, I agree, the number of fat to obese children that I see at the store/in the paper/anywhere is really scary.  They've hardly started their lives and already have a horrible weight problem.  :(

Esther, Pete made a very nice little RV out of that van!   @O@ I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip to Branson (after listening to "the pitch").   lol

We used to go to Branson every year for several years when our children were young.  (It's not that far away from southeast Ks).  You'll love the craft shops at Silver Dollar City, as well as the shows and all the things to see in Branson.  You're going at a good time, too...we always seemed to go in August and it was pretty hot then.

Do you take orders for custom made gift sets?  Huh, Huh, Huh???  I have another great-grandchild due in September, but don't know yet if it's a boy or girl (She doesn't want to know...good for her!).  Anywho, if you do have time to make things to sell, I will be contacting you in Sept.   O0

Well, I would say that 40 years at the gym certainly did pay off for you, Jerry.  Do you have any idea how unusual it is for someone your age to not have any plaque or hardening of the arteries?  Kudos to you for taking such good care of yourself!  I'll bet you will live to be 100...at least.   O0

How wonderful!  I saw a hummingbird flying outside my kitchen window yesterday looking for the feeder that is usually there, and hurried to get a feeder out.  I haven't seen him/her since then but I hope it comes back.  I loooove watching hummers.  o(:-)

The closest I've seen to a nest is seeing the same hummer repeatedly flying to one of the trees in our back yard.  I'm sure it had a nest there, but it was too high for me to find it.   :-\

Welcome back, Bart!!! @O@  We wondered if you had dropped off the face of the earth.   lol  I'm glad to hear you've just been busy and can't wait to see pics of your house remodeling.

I agree with Esther that you should take your time planning your new pond and/or waterfall and get it exactly like you want it.  I'd like to start over with mine considering all the things I have learned since I started ponding.   {:-P;;

Joyce, I'm glad you and Jamie are OK.  I'm sorry about the damage to your Jeep (but also glad you were driving the Jeep instead of the PT).

I'm sad about the pregnant deer, but glad that Jamie didn't see any more than she did.  The deer are really bad around here right now, too.  I'm not sure why, but every time I read the accident reports in the paper, 10 out of 12 accidents are caused by people hitting deer.  Usually that happens in about November, during the rutting season.  I don't know why they are moving so much now.  :-\

Savannah, is that you?  Welcome to the forum...I've been gone for a while and didn't notice that you joined...until I saw your avatar.   ;D

Your little kittens are pretty, but you'll probably find, as I did, that it's very hard to give away kittens.  Everyone already has as many cats as they want or they want to buy a purebred "whatever."  :(  I love the names you gave your momma kitties...very funny!!!   lol

LuAnn,

Congrats on the new litter of kittens.  That's just about what happened to us last spring when Miss Kitty found us and then presented us with a litter of kittens.  It was the first time I had the pleasure of helping raise a litter of kittens since I was a child (all of our cats since then have been spayed/neutered).  If you're like me, you will be worrying about those babies until they reach a size where they can take care of themselves (since they're outside).  Kittens are sooooo cute, and I love to watch them playing.   :)

Chit Chat / Re: Doggie Prayers Please
« on: May 06, 2008, 09:56:14 PM »
Dang it, I'm having problems with the pictures on the forum for some reason, so I can't see your Spike.  However, I know what American Eskimos look like (my daughter had one), so I'm sure your boy is beautiful.  I know you realize he has lived a long life for a dog...not that it makes it any easier to see him failing.

I will pray that you have a few more years with your Pikey, and that you will be able to keep him comfortable during that time.  I sounds as if you're doing a good job of that right now, and I hope the medicine continues to work and that, when his time comes it will be peaceful and painless.  I will also pray for strength and peace for you as you see him through this time.

It's just so hard to see our fur babies get old.  I have always wished that they had longer life spans.  My Old English Sheepdog, Baby, was the best dog I've ever had in my life, and I still miss him.  :'(   However, I do have good memories of him to sustain me.   :)
