Photo Album / For all you "fish pic starved" northern ponders ...
« on: March 03, 2007, 02:16:00 PM »
Today I was experimenting with my still camera (which also has the ability to take short video clips) and new polarizing lens ...
After all my messing around I found that I was kinda pleased with one short clip and thought that those of you who are still buried in blizzards and ice and snow and all that nasty northern "ambiance" might enjoy meeting "Sonny". Sonny is the little piggy who is front and center in this clip and I swear that at one point he winks at the camera while he swims around being a piggy.

Hope you enjoy my little buddy ...

LeeAnne,

Amen to comcast webpage being unfriendly ... I use mine ONLY as a place to store photos for web linking, and use "filezilla" as the uplink program. It makes it so I don't even have to go to comcast at all, just use it for a repository, and THAT makes it user friendly, IMO.

Filezilla is here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/

Let me know if you have any questions as to how/what I do.

Today has just been a font of learning for me. Max resolutions (on another topic) and now direct uploading of photos ... I've always uploaded the photo onto my page on the web and then linked there from here.

I've a question though, Sean ... I know the host places a max storage limit on the site and I'm curious about what the limit is and what happens when the limit is reached ( oldest files drop off? or?)

Not important questions, I know, just my curiosity ...

Sean, That is great info to know ... it's easy to set the resolution when the pics are uploaded and knowing the max is important ... Is there somewhere you can pin that information so it's known by one and all? It would keep posters from being disappointed by the pics not looking the way they expect them to.

Hey tink,

Do you think someone at that one store messed up on a 50% off of $169.00 clearance where it should have been $84.50 and they dropped a decimal to $8.45 ?

If so, you're one lucky girl!

Congrats ...

Hi Karen,

Based on what I read here ...

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ssu/

... and in other places, ssu.exe should not be a problem in and of itself. But, based on the recommendation here, it won't hurt to click "end process" to stop it and see the result. At that point, let us know what's happened once you shut it down and we'll go from there.

Pond Chat / Morning visitor
« on: February 07, 2007, 07:25:28 AM »
At 8:12 this morning I snapped these pictures of a visitor to the pond.

This is the first time I've seen one of these in my backyard  :o, but I'll bet it's not the last.

Hopefully, the vertical sides and having nothing less than 20" deep to stand on will keep them out of the pond itself {nono}, but time will tell.

Momentarily forgetting all the evil things he/she has in mind for the fish, the Great Blue Heron certainly is a beautiful bird.

Technology Talk / Re: What the ? and how do I fix it..
« on: November 05, 2006, 01:30:47 PM »
Kay,
My wife has the same problem with e-mail to one of her friends. My best guess is that the recipient of your e-mail does not have "Franklin Gothic Demi" installed on their computer (i.e. doesn't use Word/Outlook and thus that font was never installed). When they receive your e-mail their program converts your e-mail to whatever their default font is and the code for an apostrophe in your font equals ’ in their default font. If it were me, I'd change my font to something universal (Times New Roman, for example), send them an e-mail as a test and see if that fixes it. If so, the easy solution would be to settle on a different font that you like.

Is this showing up on your computer in e-mails that you receive from others or is it on e-mails they receive from you? Or both?

It is a "text style" translation problem somewhere in the chain of transfer. The problem is ... identifying where the breakdown occurs and what is missing.

What font do you write your e-mails in? Did you recently change fonts and that's when the problem began? More info, please.

« on: November 04, 2006, 10:57:51 AM »
I too have bounced around a bit ... the highs and lows may not be for exactly where I was living but are from the closest city that posts record hi's & lows (i.e. Istanbul instead of Karamursel/Kocaeli, Turkey and Hartford instead of Rocky Hill, CT).

Place         High Record      Low Record

Providence, RI      104°F in Aug      -13°F in Jan
Great Lakes, IL      108°F in Jul      -27°F in Jan
Pensacola, FL      106°F in Jul      5°F in Jan
Adak, AK         75°F in Aug      3°F in Feb
KamiSeya, Japan      106°F in Aug      25°F in Jan
Wahiawa, HI      95°F in Sep      52°F in Jan
Karamursel, Turkey   100°F in Jul      16°F in Jan
Rocky Hill, CT      102°F in Jul      -26°F in Jan
Indianapolis, IN      104°F in Jul      -27°F in Jan
Baltimore, MD      105°F in Aug      -7°F in Jan
North Port, FL      99°F in Jun      18°F in Dec
Arcadia, FL      100°F in May      21°F in Dec
Middleburg, FL      103°F in Jun      7°F in Jan

When one remembers and writes down ALL of the places, it makes for some interesting memories ... Thanks for the nudge, Lilith  o(

Go here:

http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Download latest version:

Install it:

Worst case is that you'll overwrite what you already have, no problem ...
Best case is that you will install and enable the most current version of java ... no problem ...

If you're interested in learning more before you download, go here

http://www.java.com/en/about/

Java should not conflict with other programs, many, many, many of them use JRE (java) to make all their pretty pictures ...

Here you go, LeeAnne ...Wikipedia to the rescue!  @O@  O0

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3

After you look at the article you'll probably decide it's way TMI,  when in fact it's like a car, you don't need to know how to build it to drive it. From that point of view, MP3 is a way of recording audio files that sounds "good enough" while taking up a WHOLE LOT LESS storage space/memory than that same audio before it's compressed to the MP3 format. And that's it in a nutshell.

Photo Album / Re: First Resident - Escape Attempt!
« on: October 27, 2006, 02:17:39 PM »
Well, the "official First Resident" here at Chez JohnInFlorida tried to become the "official First Escapee" ...

the mini-pond is netted to keep out the leaves and the netting hangs over the edge, into the water of the big pond.

Minnie, otherwise known as the first resident, found her way to the bottom of the netting and started climbing, making her bid for freedom!

But alas! Her attempt at escape and life in the wild is spoiled by the guy with the beard! Curses, foiled again!!  &-)

Needless to say, I've subsequently had a stern talk with Minnie and she promises she'll never do it again.  O0

But I also removed the netting, just in case ...  ::)

Photo Album / First Resident ... Nearly Escapes!
« on: October 27, 2006, 09:58:30 AM »
Meet Minnie the official first resident of the "big pond" here at JohnInFlorida's.

A western painted turtle, she was released into the pond this morning and started wandering around like she owned the place. Shortly thereafter she was joined by 3 dozen tadpoles, just to keep her occupied. She seems quite happy to be chasing the taddies around and she'll definately be getting plenty of exercise while trying to trap a meal. 8-)~       A small turtle in a great big puddle, but that gives the taddies a sporting chance. (8:-)

All in all, the fine tuning of the pond seems to be going well. I've been fighting with a leak but think I've discovered the location ... a joint  in one corner of the left bog which didn't get sealed correctly. I crammed the corner full of hydraulic cement and will re-test the bog later this afternoon. Hopefully that's the location of the leak.

More to come ...

« on: October 26, 2006, 06:46:53 AM »
Teresa,
You do know that you can make it impossible for them to do that, don't you?

The upside is that they cannot add programs or change settings.

The downside is that if it's something you are ok with them changing, you have to do it for them.

If this is news to you, look into "User Accounts" on the control panel or I'll be happy to assist you. If you already know all this, just forget I said anything at all except:

Teresa,

Unless there is some reason you do not want ActiveX to run (not likely) you can reset it here:

http://www.pcpitstop.com/testax.asp

I'm assuming she is using Internet Explorer and if so, there is no reason to restrict ActiveX from running.

Hope this helps,
