Every time I see Raspberry Sorbet bloom I speak of it!  So, Louis, your first statement is wrong!
Craig, my buddy, my pal.  I had a pool malfunction in the pool that has the Im. you sent me...  I couldn't believe that 4 adult goldfish and 6 babies could survive for I don't know how long, in about 2 cups of water.  The fish survived, but I don't thing the Im. liked it.  I had a few that sprouted, then the "malfuntion".  I think I killed them... >:(-
Could you save this idiot a few tubers too?   o(:-)
Tammie

you are too kind, thanks tammie.

« on: January 06, 2007, 06:22:27 AM »
i thought i would share a project that i have been working on for the Litchfield, Connecticut Congregational Church.

this fine old church was started in the mid 1700's and the building was built in the early 1800's. it just went through a massive restoration, both inside and outside. the steeple was in danger of falling. they commissioned me to document the church and i have tried to show it in all its glory.

it is the most photographed church in connecticut and possibly all of new england.

enjoy,

lou

Hey Lou,

I have a whole drawer of "old" seed. Might need to dust them off and see what I get.<g>  Got in a treasure trove of Aussie seed today!  Three color forms of violacea, N alexii, N elleniae, 2 forms of N. georginae, N. hastifolia, three kinds of gigantea and two of immutabilis.

Out to keep me busy for awhile.<g>  If and when I get it to grow out and tuber there should be some new stuff if you want to give it a try.

hi craig,

i would love to give them a try. thanks for the offer..

happy new year everyone,

every fall i plant my summers crop of seeds, hoping for the one plant that will shock the world. so far nothing to speak of.

However, I am trying an experiment this year. besides planting some seeds from this past summer, I  also planted some 7 year old tropical seeds from crosses i made back then. they have been stored in amber pill bottles with a desiccant pill. they were collecting dust on a shelf in a cabinet.

there are seeds from three different crosses, one from a cross between jack wood and star of siam, and the other two batches were chance seed pods.

i had about a 50 percent germination rate, and they are growing very strongly. i planted the seeds in the middle of november of 2006.

i am not sure how long tropical seeds will be viable. this is an interesting experiment.

it was difficult to get a decent photo of the seedlings with the glare of the grow lights, however this image will give you an idea.

the silver object to the top of the photo is a stainless backup heater. water temp is a constant 85 degrees and the lights are on for 16 hours a day.

it is truly unbelievable, everyone is trying to get into your pockets. i don't trust anyone anymore. all the utility companies, cable, telephone, they are out to rip you off.

just recently our cable company that i have my internet connection with, cut the download speed in half and now want you to pay $15.00 dollars extra to bring the speed up to where it was when i first got it. how cheeky they are.

stop the world, i want to get off at the next stop

hello leeanne,
i can feel your pain. there are times when i wish i did not have any cats or other furry friends. for me to loose one, is like loosing a part of me.

i still feel so sad for the ones i have lost.  i lost a beloved cat in may of this year and i still have all the sympathy cards on the mantle. they give us so much joy and ask so little in return.

Pond Chat / Re: I'm back - and I've got aphids on my indoor lilies!
« on: December 23, 2006, 06:07:36 PM »
hello Sheila,

once you have aphids, you will most likely get ants. they seem to come out of nowhere. ants farm aphids for their "honeydew"

i have had good luck with a peppermint oil that you can get from a health store. about 12 drops to a quart of water, put a little dish detergent in it and spray to your hearts content. smells good too :)

I know I will earn the ire of some of you big-hearted folks also. i am so sorry for their families and its sad to have someone die needlessly, especially in the prime of their lives, however these guys were just plain stupid, inexperienced and reckless.  just look what their stupidity has done: needless risk of lives and equipment and the cost will be outrageous.

here in connecticut, there is a little known law whereas the authorities can fine and charge careless hikers, climbers and other thrill seekers, who get into trouble the cost of the rescue, thats if they come out alive.

Pond Chat / Update on overwintering my dwarf papyrus
« on: December 07, 2006, 07:17:04 PM »
If you remember, i had asked if anyone had any ideas on how i could overwinter a really nice large dwarf papyrus. well i have it in a container in the basement with water and a 60 watt grow light on it for 16 hours a day. its doing very nicely, nice and green and is actually growing, even with the cold temps down there. the water is about 50 degrees. at this rate, i think it will make it.

Pond Chat / Re: How to heat greenhouse pond?
« on: November 30, 2006, 06:17:10 AM »
I use a 200 watt aquarium heater in one tank and an old waterbed heater in the other. I really like the waterbed heater because the temp stays right on. I lay the heater under a liner in the tub. This is my 4th season using it without any problems.

Maryvonne

hi mary,
a word of warning, i tried the waterbed heaters and almost burned the house down. luckly i was having breakfast, looking into the greenhouse when the heater literally excploded and the liner of the pond started to melt.

they were not designed for all that pressure of the water.  fair warning.

Fantastic photos Lou.  The last time I saw BB King live was in Gainesville during the winter of 75'!  While I'm starting to sound like an old giser I really do like listening to him on the stereo with a peaty single malt scotch!

Cheers,

gary

move over, this old giser likes a single malt also.

I added that for the PM option. The new format doesnt let people know easily that thay have a PM.
The AOL "You've Got Mail" sound is perfect for letting people know they have  PM.

Cheers,
Sean

thanks sean, its a good idea.
i too, have the aol guy for my mail, even though i dont have aol. thats what was confusing.

thanks,
