Pond Chat / Oh Happy Day!
« on: April 18, 2010, 08:58:05 PM »
So... the bad news is that somehow I hurt my back in December and I am not able to go into the pond for now, or do much gardening. :(  But the good news is that my husband went in for me today, cleaned the leaves out, and brought up all the pots to the side of the pond so I could clean the plants and fertilize them.  The following is what I found today.

The first 2 are "cheap" water lilies from WalMart that did well for me their first summer last year and made it through the winter nicely with the heater we had in the pond.

This one started growing so nicely with the early warm temperatures that we've had, that it grew through the basket and broke it!  I removed it, sutured up the side with gardening wire, and potted up this baby. O0

Then I saw this!  At least 5 lily buds already growing in the second pot - in April! WOW!!! @O@

And this one that I bought at the end of August last year from PetSmart - the tuber was all but dead, but it did grow quickly and even flowered a few before the season ended.  It, too, has 2 buds coming up - I am thrilled!

What made you happy today?

Missa - I took some pictures of my ajuga for you today.

The other side

After all the rain we had in March, and then the very warm temperatures early this year, these plants are full of blooms and so cheerful!

It will do well in clay - we have very dense clay soil here and mine is in full flower this week.

Yes I agree it can be quite invasive, but if you are growing it where it can't reach the lawn area it is quite beautiful as well.  It spreads by roots, so if there is a barrier that will work.  Or as I am doing, growing it on a hilltop and keeping it in check works as well.  When it starts to grow where I don't want it, I dig up that part making sure to get all the roots, and move it where it is more desirable.

We have a store here called Christmas Tree Shops.  It's mostly in the northeast so far, and they sell seasonal things in addition to a few pieces of furniture and home goods, some food, stationary, toys, etc.

That is the ONLY place I have found the Jobes tomato spikes the past 2 years here in my county and 2 surrounding counties.  I'm not sure they are this year's spikes, but it didn't seem to matter when I used them last year - they worked just fine.  They are the 6-18-6 this year.  I bought 4 packages of 18 which should be good for the 5 hardy lilies I have in the pond.

I have lots of the tri-colored type planted on either side of the waterfall hill of my pond, in full all day sun and it loves it there!  With the early hot weather we've had recently, it's coming into full bloom already this year with lots of flowers!

OK!  After trying all day, I found 2 Asian stores on the other side of the Hudson River, where my parents live, who say they always carry fresh lotus roots.  I will be at my parents in 2 weeks.

What should I look for in these roots, and will they really flower for me?!?  Do you know what color flowers they might be - from the roots that are usually sold as food?  Any special planting tips?

Thanks! ;)

Have you done this, and do you have any pictures to share?  We don't have any Asian food stores around here, but I would seek one out if this really works.

Pond Chat / Re: What happens if you encourage ducks
« on: April 07, 2010, 06:34:48 PM »
A family of ducks in your pond means BIG time pooping and messing your pond up.

Exactly what I was going to say!!!  We had 5 mallards in our pond the first year it was filled with water and while I enjoyed watching them I had to chase them away for fear of the messes that would soon come.

Your picture of the fox is wonderful.  O0 We had a red fox in our yard about 2 months ago, sunning in the one spot of yard that was not covered in snow.  Such a nice sight to see.

In response to a few posts above, I received my first catalogue from Tricker today and I could barely look at it.  The pictures are all so colorized it hurt my eyes to try and find the water lilies I might be interested in.  I find this often with some other plant catalogues as well - do they really think we are so stupid as to believe some of the colors that they are printing?

Will she make it?!?  I've had 8 sarassa comets for about 8 months now.  They gotten to be a nice size - bought them as feeder size and they are now about 5-6 inches long including tails. They have been chasing 3 in particular, but this morning they are all after one.  NON-STOP!  I've watched this for about an hour already, but I'm sure it's been going on longer than that.

They all gang up on her and surround her in the middle and smash into her - not so much into the side of the pond, although they are chasing her right along the edges.  She must be exhausted! :o  How long does it take for the eggs to be released?  And more importantly... will she survive this?!? :(

Hula hoops then attach a piece of string or fishing line to either one of the rocks or even a stake in the ground....

Yep - that is what I do as well. Our waterfall creates such a strong current that anything floating goes directly to the skimmer, so I have to tether everything to the side of the pond.

Pond Chat / Re: A question for those that use plant spikes.

Thanks Shannah.

Ask and you shall receive!  Not only did my dad pick some tomato spikes up for me, but my very good online friend in Illinois did as well, and sent them to me in a box full of goodies.  PLUS... my Christmas Tree Shops apparently got a huge shipment in also and I bought 4 packages of 18 spikes earlier today, before I received the package today, so I am good to go! @O@

The interesting thing is... Dad got his at an ACE Hardware store in Florida, and today he told me they are 8-24-8!  I thought others had said here that Jobes isn't making those anymore?  Do I assume these are old then?  Dad said they had LOTS of them.  The ones I bought, and the ones my friend sent are 6-18-6.

@O@  My dad was able to buy some Jobes tomato spikes in Florida for me! O0  I asked him to look there, as I figured they have a longer growing season and would hopefully sell them more than around here.

The question is... can I wait to use them til my parents return to NY on  April 22, or should I ask him to mail them to me?  I have noticed that the water lilies started sending up leaves when we were warm 2 weeks ago, but then we have had this awful very cold weather once again.  This weekend is supposed to be up near 80!  Back and forth, back and forth! :D

Looks like I"m batting 1000 here - NOT!  :P You would think living in the suburbs here we would have at least one of those stores, but there isn't an ACE of True Value Hardware anywhere around her either - I was looking for one a few months ago actually.

I've recently befriended the manager of the pathetic gardening section of our teensy WalMart, so I will start badgering him about getting some tomato spikes in - one can hope, right? {:-P;;

Unfortunately we lost all our dollar stores but one and it's not very good at all.  And yes, last summer I checked all the nurseries - even the more expensive ones that I don't like to patronize, and not one had any tomato spikes.

I have started looking this year and even though many stores have their spring items out already, not a single tomato spike is to be found... yet! ;)

I will find some, one way or another - I am determined!  O0

Esther, do you have a picture of your fence that you could post here?  We also have been having a heron problem and not that my fish have warmed up this spring I want to nip things in the bud before that pterodactyl gets any more!!!

We don't have an Atwoods here unfortunately.

I, too, would buy all they had at WalMart IF mine bothered to carry them!

I've been using the tomato spikes the past 2 years that our pond has been up, but I have a very hard time finding them for sale around here.  I was lucky enough to find some in Christmas Tree Shops, and that's not even a nursery store.

Where are you all finding your tomato spikes?  WalMart here, Home Depot, and Lowes have not sold them since I started looking for them 2 years ago.

Very nice fish!

I fed my comets some cheerios yesterday and today.  The water was right around 50 degrees and they were swimming around the surface for days, looking bored, so I threw a few in.  They ate some and played with some.  I hope I didn't do any harm.

I have used a new toilet brush, but as I said above, most of it breaks apart before I can swirl any onto the brush, and scatters into the pond to grow more and cover more! >:(

I guess I will see what this season brings - we haven't cleaned out all the leaves yet, as we've just started getting nice warmer weather.

I keep reading about people pulling out the string algae but I've never been able to do that - it's always so slippery and slimey that I can't get a grip on it no matter what I use.  Also - it tends to break apart very quickly before I can scoop it up.

What do you all use to pull it out?
