My sister keeps goats . . . . I never had any idea that they were soooooo cute!  Since everyone else wants the black one, I'll take the other, cuter one!

Give me at least two weeks . . . . DD#1 is an actress in the musical Cats and I don't have time to brush my teeth regularly, let alone mail plants . . . . . But please remind me in early May and I promise I have some I can, and will, send to you!!

Pond Chat / Re: need help with shade pond
« on: April 16, 2007, 06:02:13 PM »
Some of the plants Andrew mentions might be useful, but it all depends on your zone and just how shady the pond really is . . . . have you ever actually gone out and drawn a diagram of the sun shining on the pond every hour on the hour?  I did that and found that one side of the pond got enough sun for lilies to bloom and the other did not.  Without knowing your zone, even Andrew cannot say which plants are hardy and will do well for you and which will not.

It's also helpful to know if you have filtration or a waterfall as moving water will deter some plants without bothering others.  Are there still areas in your pond?  And 150 gallons isn't too large, but how deep is the bottom and how deep are any plant shelves?  Different plants like different amounts of water over the crown or roots.

I have two shady ponds and grow different plants in each because the amounts of sun are different in each and the depths are different and one has a falls while the other has none.

I've had so many nephews in this war (lost one to it early on) that I've not had to go looking for anyone to contact.  I've just had one nephew come back and another is scheduled to re-deploy back to Iraq for a second tour - don't like those odds at all!

It is one of the saddest things that I've watched happen in a while . . . those were all young kids just about to begin their lives . . . . . I know that there are a lot of sad things going on in the world, but this is just so senseless . . .

Has he ever really stuck his nose in the water to catch one?  If he does, he might just get a snootful and quit trying.  If not, I'd just let him go . . . . most cats cannot really catch fish and I doubt seriously that dogs can either !

Ok Scott - but you'll want to be very patient!  I hate going to the post office and I've got a buncha stuff going on just now.  I also have a standing order for most of my frogbit . . . send a box north every year.  Think I have enough for two tho . . .

Kim, I don't grow iris at all because it doesn't like my pond.  I said Acorus which is sweet flag.  I don't know if all acorus will grow in shade or not - I haven't had much luck with the full sized acorus, just the dwarf, yellow kind (acorus gramineus 'ogon' to be exact).  It grows like a weed in my pond - thick and lush and stays green all winter for me.  I have never had it in dirt either, just rocks.

Kay the Golden club is a slow grower and a very pleasant, pretty plant.  Mine is in a pot that keeps the dirt at the surface of the water, but when we went thru the Okefenokee it was growing everywhere from the banks (out of water but roots probably reached it) to submerged by 2 feet.  It didn't seem to care if it was in sun or shade either . . . the plant I have is one of the very first pond plants I got when I built this pond, so I've had it for years and years and have never divided it.
