OK, Lou, I've got it.

They for sure keep that helicopter in a heated hanger right?

There's gotta be room in there. ;)

Louis,
Can you go to a home improvement store and get a big plastic tub, and put the container in it, keep water in the tub over the winter?
I keep my marginals in a tub like that over the winter on a back porch. (in the heated house, but cooler)
Every so often I add several gallons of water.

Steve

steve, i could do that but no room in the house and the greenhouse is not heated in the winter.

thanks,

lou

Can you bring it in and treat it as a houseplant?  Find a pretty pot to put it in (just drop the current pot in the pretty pot) and stick it in a corner?  It will help humidify the house too.

hi teresa, thats one option but the pot its in now is huge, the size of a bushel basket.
thanks for the suggestion

I have a really nice small papyrus, about 3 feet tall and its in a 16 inch container. i really hate to see it die when the cold sets in. is there any way i can overwinter it without spending a fortune on electricity??

i have a full cellar that gets down to about 45 in the winter and a garage that freezes, any ideas?

thanks,

louis

« on: September 06, 2006, 07:23:40 PM »
hi bart,
your idea is a good one. it should work with no problems at all.

darn the cold weather. i am going to move in with either tammie or craig.

lets see, if i move in with tammie, i will have to muck the stalls. hmmmm  :-\

if i move in with craig, i will have to build ponds until florida has no more inland, it will be all ponds.

hmmm.  :-\

i wonder who is the better cook.   ::)

Pond Chat / Re: Last blooms of the summer.
« on: September 03, 2006, 06:21:57 AM »
thanks everyone. i was not a fan of white lilies either, but when i saw this one two years ago, i had to have it. its in a pond all of its own and it spreads like wildfire. its a large white bloom, some of them in excess of 8 inches. it takes a while to get re established in the spring, but when it does, there are multiple blooms on it at once. if i keep it out longer and it gets colder, the tips of the petals will turn a bright magenta. i will see if i can get a photo of this trait.

i forgot to mention, this lily is one of the creations by charles winch of Australia.

Pond Chat / Last blooms of the summer.
« on: September 02, 2006, 05:45:01 PM »
Its been too short of a summer. nights are cool and its almost raining constantly. as we speak, there is a cold rain and its only in the mid 50's.

I find that the tropicals behave in a most different way when it gets cool. the blooms stay open longer and the color intensifies. i just took a look out on the pond and there are three white delights still in full bloom and its been dark for well over an hour. the night bloomers never close, the bloom will stay open for 3 or 4 days and then sink to the bottom. here are some of the linger-ons.

lou

they are:

AQUARIUS

PERRY'S ORANGE SUNSET

UN NAMED PINK HYBRID FROM THIS YEAR

WHITE DELIGHT

I have had good luck with oil of pepermint, that you can get at a health food store. i mix about 10 drops into a quart of water and spray. it works and makes the yard smell nice also.

hi joyce, shopping does wonders for the soul. even if you buy something and then return it the next day. something about carrying all those "store" bags home.
