Pond Chat / Re: Choosing Waterlilies

Another thing: I've been in kind of an extended love affair with Chromatella for the last couple years. Clear pale yellow blooms that are almost full size on a lovely little well-behaved plant.

It outperforms my Graziella (mini shell pink) by far. I keep rooting divs. of Chromatella all over the margins of the pond and they grow great there in just dirty gravel.

I will have some divisions in a couple months, let me know if you want one.

Dave, I had an Attraction growing in an enormous tub in my backyard, and because its a moderately large lily it kept trying to throw pads out the top of the tub, and naturally they'd get damaged by birds/dry out.

Then when I'd reposition the pads to keep them kind of overlapping inside the top of the tub, so much sunlight was excluded from reaching the crown of the plant underwater, that the thing simply refused to bloom.

You could use a smaller hardy waterlily that is very floriferous, like a Chromatella (yellow) or a Laydekeri Fulgens (red), and set the pot within six inches of the surface.

Alternatively you could use a tropical lily and miniaturize it by keeping it in a tiny pot of soil.
I did that last year in a large shallow bowl-shaped container:

Now I'll definitely try using grass clippings for the next season.
Thank you. Sending good thoughts your way hon.

Toots, you are simply amazing.

Another note-

I'm a 'newbie' on this site. I see a lot of icons and notes next to people's names. Like # of trades...how do I register those here?

Also in the past I just gave away my plants for free or for just postage. This is my first try at an outright sale.

If anyone has criticism/ feedback about my offer or my post, I would appreciate hearing from you.
I have a bunch more stuff to trade later this Spring and I don't want to look like a moron.

Thanks,
Laura W.

Kudos, Joyce! What a job indeed.

I dumped my two lotus tubs over this morning too- they are 2-foot diameter and 2-foot tall plastic tubs. The plants in them were two years old, and I have enormous tubers up the wazoo.
Uhhh...that last sentence came out kind of badly but I'm gonna leave it there because it's funny  :D

I had originally filled the tubs with alternating layers of compost and hay to keep them lighter than all-dirt (they were still over 100 lbs. each) to facilitate moving them into the enclosed porch for the Winter. You guys were skeptical when I posted about it, but it seems to have worked out quite well. Lots of flowers.

After two years would you believe that much of the hay at the bottom and center was still intact and not decomposed a bit?

**UPDATE**
I still have some tubers left, mostly Mrs. Perry Slocum. I'd like to finish up the sale and have everything ready to ship on Monday.

If you're interested, please email me before Sunday night.

Thanks!  o(:-)

(original post below)

I have many good divisions of:

Mrs. Perry Slocum
Rosea Plena

Some of you may remember trading with me from the 'old' message board. I give great big divisions in very good condition.

Each of these tubers has 2-5 nodes and at least one actively growing tip, most have two or more growing tips.

$10 each tuber and $10 each parcel shipping. I use UPS ground (local only) or FedEx 2-Day air for shipping plants.

Alternatively, I am looking for dwarf or 'bowl' lotus tubers, and a good-sized true tetragona plant or tetragona seeds. The tetragonas that Swimming Jewel Joyce traded me a couple years back got destroyed by some animal that got into the pond last year. I think it was a muskrat :(

If you're interested please email me privately at: wepackship@snet.net

Thanks!
I'll wheel them up cozy to the house and give the insulation trick a try.

You guys are the best, so glad to be back.  o(:-)

One of the first two waterlilies I ever had was Moondance.

Lovely, lovely.

I have had a Mrs. Perry Slocum and a -I want to say Rubra Plena, but it may be Rosea Plena- in two enormous tubs since Spring '05. They bloomed gorgeous this year and gave me a lot of seeds too.

I'm in Zone 6, but the last few Winters have been pretty severe; I generally plant for Zone 5.

The thought of hauling these 150-200lb tubs back into the porch for the Winter...ugh. We have a dolly and a ramp up the steps, but I'm not doing that again!

Any tips on collecting the tubers and storing them for replanting next year?
I have no idea how to do this.

I used to be on the old pond message board...and the old-old one before that. This is my first post here.

Joyce, I'm assuming you are Swimming Jewel Joyce (Long Island)?
And is that Lou by the lake in CT?

Its so good to see all the familiar names again!

Is Spanish Leprechaun around? I wanted to ask him a question.
