Pond Chat / Re: Amazon lily circa 19th century

Fascinating!

Quote
The 6th Duke of Devonshire writes that Paxton's 7 year old daughter, weighing 100lbs, was placed on one of the pads where it held her weight.

I do have a little bit of suspicion about that.... my daughter is 13 and barely weighs 95 pounds. My 8 year old son weighs fifty-something. They're both on the "normal" curve.

The quest for plants was very popular with the Brits. Ever read "The Orchid Thief" by Susan Orlean? Obtaining plants was a cutthroat, deadly endeavor back then!

Rick, you should really test the water. If you have the Aquarium Pharm test kit, use it! It's a fine kit for testing pond water.
Sure, adding fish may have introduced a parasite, but testing the water is step one. Test and post the numbers here.

I got a little worried at the title of your post (I'm so glad nothing bad happened). Prayers to your current family members and to the newest member that he or she arrives healthy.

Mikey, have you ever tried the N. Carolina style. with the vinegary BBQ sauce and slaw? It was so ubiquitous when we lived in the Va tidewater area. Almost addictive...
I've tried the TX style, which is more like a gravy, and the KC style which is thicker, and sweeter. But I don't think I've tried the Memphis style. Although I did make Meathead's "Memphis Dust" for my last shoulder. Which brings the question can you use a Memphis rub with a Kansas City sauce?  :D

Maybe that is my calling for this week. Memphis... rub AND sauce.

Happy Birthday to your daughter, Kim. That's a beautiful ring. My daughter will be turning 14 in about a month and I'm worried like hell.... but I'm sure you feel the same.
It is soooo different today than it was when we were kids!

Tootsie, sorry for the lateness, but I'm sorry about your dad and pray a thank you for his service.

They pegged me pretty well:
"Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak."

I really thought I'd lost my NY accent and was solidly neutral. But they didn't mention anything about Long Island, which has a subtle difference than  NYC.

Pawk the Kaw = pak the kaa = paarrrk the karr (NY, Boston, Chicago)

Sean, it looks better than ever. One nagging question, though, and I hope you don't take it the wrong way, but how do you keep your balls clean?  :D
I can't keep mine in the water because they get crusted up with mineral deposits. Yours are nice and shiny.

Great photo.
Do you do anything special to attract the indigo bunting and scarlet tanager? I've never seen either one in real life. You say you feed the birds- do you mind if I ask what? Is it like a general mix, or something more specialized?

Wow!

Pond Chat / Re: Lawn Service Killed My Fish
« on: August 05, 2010, 09:33:52 AM »
That has happened to me several times when my neighbor had her trees sprayed. There are some things you can do depending on where you live. In my state, I can call up the company doing the spraying and request that they inform me 24 hours in advance of the spraying. That gives me the opportunity to cover the pond. I've covered the pond many times, but I found that just going outside and giving a reminder to the spray guy is enough to keep him careful. I also told the lawn guy about it, and he said he's required to stay at least ten feet away from the edge of the pond.

I think it was Roarke who originally told me that, if you suspect overspray, to start doing water changes and use activated carbon filtration. I have one activated carbon filter pad that was made for my size filter, that I keep in case of an emergency.

Sorry you lost your fish, I hope Scott's does the right thing. Let us know what happens.

Kim, your photos are great! I love the combo of the purple hyacinths with the black eyed susans... so pretty.

I bought a Oly stylus 850, but didn't like it as much so I went back to using the "old" 740 uz. It's a great camera.

Cool Shades, is this the place you posted pictures of when you were building it? It's very nic, you've come a long way.
I love the new pond and the placement of plants. How deep is it?

I very much doubt he was eating ketchup by the shots. The picture was taken because he was trying to get the last out of the cup and so picked it up hoping it would run into his mouth. He'll be 2 on 9/11.

My daughter's B-day is 9/11 too.

Well, President Reagan declared it WAS a vegetable!   lol

Yup! Reagan also said "Government is like a baby: An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other." - Ronald Reagan

LOL! My daughter used to dip a lollipop into ketchup. Gotta get those kids addicted to sugar as soon as possible. There are three times more sugar in a single serving of ketchup than the human body normally has in total circulation.

Sad, actually. Cancer feeds on sugar.

This is a description of the video:

Several years ago, Rockwell International decided to get
into the heavy duty transmission business. They were getting
ready to tape their first introduction video. As a warm up,
the professional narrator began what has become a legend
within the trucking industry.

This man should have won an academy award for his stellar
performance. Now remember this is strictly off the cuff,
nothing is written down. You ought to enjoy this once in a
lifetime performance from this gentleman.

One more thing- I just saw a TV commercial for something called "Damp Rid", it's supposed to absorb moisture. Maybe that would help to get rid of the dampness and help with the smell.

Good luck, Sean! Maybe if they did notice your nervousness, they would correlate that to how much you value your work and see that as a good thing.

I know it sounds silly, but i've heard dried (unused) coffeegrounds removes odors.  Don't know why i know that... must've been in an e-mail my mother forwarded to me.   I think the last one i received was for all the things you can do with WD-40  :D

I have heard the same thing. Coffee grounds. I probably read that in the Kovel's antique & collectible newsletter. They have all kinds of tips and tricks for caring for all your old things.

Jerry, you put on your Perry Mason hat and fight them!

Can we say "cajones"?

There is a stretch of road by me that's posted 45 mph. It's a nice road, then you round the bend and there is a new sign that says 25 mph. It's heavily wooded and if you are not sharp you'll miss it. The cops hide in a parking lot right across the street and wait for the unsuspecting out-of-towner.

Chit Chat / Re: What do you like to drink?
« on: July 12, 2010, 03:55:31 PM »
I have been drinking Minute Maid Light Raspberry Passion (made by Coke). It's a little too sweet, but great diluted with a little water. Or a diet Coke... I also try to limit those to one a day or so. I like red wines too, or white- but Chardonay gives me a headache. I've heard that it has something to do with the sulfites.

I also like those Iced Tea To Go packets that you add to a bottle of water.

I was looking at your picture while having my morning coffee. Didn't have time to post how pretty they all are, and how you got a great deal. After that I did my shopping, and walked past a pot with three of those succulents in it. It was 12.99. So, here I'm back again and wow! You really, really got a great deal!  ;D

Hi Karen! Yes it does get alot of sun, i actually thought i lost it this year due to our Border Collie/Cocker setting up her running path around the yard.  >:(-  Just think, if your just getting buds, in about 5 days you'll have cheesy flowers too!   @O@  You certainly do live down the road from me... i used to work at the Zainy Brainy in Deer Park years ago about mid-way between us.  We'll have to get together someday.  O0

I may have met you without even knowing- we used to shop at Zainy Brainy all the time! What a great store it was.
If your ever near Wauconda give a holler. Have you ever been to Hawthorn Gardens? They have really nice things there. Pricey, but nice.

ohhhh Lynn look what i found at Menards yesterday, dwarf cosmos!  @O@  i just had to get me some  {:-P;;

Also a pic of my Butterfly weed now in full bloom  o(:-)  Guess i'll have to save some seeds for everyone.  :D

Love your orange Poppies miguynmkoi!

Pondering, is your Butterfly weed in full sun? I'm about 38 miles northwest of Chicago (get on Rand and keep goin'  :)) and mine is only just forming buds. It probably gets more shade than it wants. But once July arrives it blooms the entire month. It is a really great plant.
