Thanks all... worked 30 hours in the last 60 and am beat but decided to drop in while waiting on a return call.
Several of you remarked on the Purple with the red pads.
That in Nymphaea 'Ultra Violet' released this year by Florida Aquatics.
It was the IWGS Waterlily of the year 2 years ago.
They also release Nymphaea 'Bulls Eye' this year a runner up.
Even though it has plain green pads it is as great visually as Ultra Violet.

Mike, you asked about my newer red... here is a pic or 2...
Mine is the stellate flower.
I wanted to look at a comparison of color to Bulls Eye so the last shot has Bulls Eye on the left.
The flower is almost like a red version of Nymphaea 'Star of Siam'
The third shot is of it's pad.
What do you all think???

It's new to the world.
It is Nymphaea 'Wanvisa' a hardy waterlily produced by Mr. Nopchai Chansilpa of Thailand and it is awesome in person.
He is letting us show it at the International Waterlily Collection this year for Lily Fest and the IWGS Symposium.

A couple more while I am here...
We had the coldest winter in over 100 years but we are now 10 inches behind in rain and very toasty... it is so hot the dragonfly are looking for shade.

Hi all,
I am busy with work, all the websites and the journal for the IWGS.
I apologize that I don't get by here very often anymore.
When I do get new material I have to get it up on my IWC site or my IWC Facebook page and then after that sometimes things go on the IWGS website or in the journal.
If you have an opportunity and want to check out some newer things, go and "like" my Facebook page for the IWC.
I have been collecting new material for about the last 8 months for the IWC Lily Fest and the IWGS Symposium in San ANgelo.
We are going to have somewhere between 200 and 300 lilies on display.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/San-Angelo-TX/International-Waterlily-Collection/98465558398#!!!!

Here are a few teaser shots I recently posted...
And yes, you should recognize the last plant... It is Mike aka turtlemike's Nymphaea 'Sunfire'
It is stunning. that was the first bloom and it was nearly 6 inches across on a relatively small plant... Wow.

Wow...
Horses are knee deep in it aren't they.
Glad things are working out for ya.

I have been working like crazy at my job.
Getting ready to leave for work and I might not get home until the New Year... hope to get home a bit before midnight if I can though.
I had to cram over the last few weeks to get that last IWGS Journal done so when I wasn't at work, I was working and not able to surf the net.

Have a good one.

The pools are 5 feet wide and about 10 or 11 inches deep.
Jonna, if you are referring to the breakdown of the kiddie pools, it depends.
I have some that are 4 years old and fine. About half of what I bought in the last year have developed cracks and leaks.
Unfortunately the plastic used to make these comes from the same petroleum used for gasoline.
Remember gas got to over $4.00 a gallon last year in the states.
I think the manufacturers just got cheap and did not make them as thick to save on costs.
The heck of it is that when I started buying them they were $8.88, now they are $11.88 or higher.
That is a 25% increase in price in just 2 years. It is not cost effective if they stay cheaply made.

BTW, I'm glad you liked the shots.
 :)

Here is the weirdness in pics...
Opened waterlilies that couldn't close because of snow in them.
Palm trees with snow on them.
This may seem everyday to most of you but this is only about the 5th time we have had snow in Houston in my 45 years.

And by the way, the water on the pads is actually melted snow.
I was able to get out and take these shots about 2 hours after it had stopped snowing.

Here is a pic taken before snow and ice showed up in San Angelo.
Weird weather this year, very cold very early.
Heck we actually had a snow storm last Friday in Houston of all places.
The earliest recorded snowfall...
Still Foxfire is tough...

Enjoy.

« on: December 11, 2009, 08:23:42 AM »
The first picture does indeed look like N. 'Madame Ganna Walska'.

Quote
and another question is ........ that nenufar is this?

There is no way to be 100% certain but based on the color of the petals, the flecking on the pad, and the strong
spotting that I believe is on the outside of the sepal would make me guess
it is N. 'Blue Beauty' which is synonymous with (N. 'Pennsylvania' Conard 1901 and N. 'Pulcherrima' Tricker ).

Yeah it is not a vivip. I was in a hurry before I left for work when I initially posted this and I know that most of what you get are vivips that you trade through the mail.
Sorry if that caused you any confusion.

Pond Chat / IWGS 2010 New Waterlily Competition
« on: December 05, 2009, 03:35:01 PM »
Here are some links I just put up with information for those interested in entering a waterlily or 2 or more into next year's competition.
The first link gives basic info on entering the contest and the process.
http://www.iwgs.org/images/stories/waterlily_competition/nwc%202010.doc
The 2nd link is to download the entry form. Note the entry form needs to be in before the merchandise actually needs to be shipped.
http://www.iwgs.org/images/stories/waterlily_competition/entry%20form%202010.doc

Note, the judging criteria will be somewhat different and hopefully make it more appealling to all who enter.
The final judging criteria is expected to be finalized by the committee and posted by the end of February.

Good luck to all participants.

Pond Chat / Re: Why is my pond so very clear?
« on: December 02, 2009, 09:38:07 PM »
I don't know what your temps are right now Jerry but when water temps drop into 50s and 60s here, many times a pond will look much clearer.
This is a number of things coming into play. Fish become lethargic and are not as active.
Less movement in the water allows any particulates in the water to drop and settle on the bottom.
Many times for us cool weather means grey days and less sunlight and that means less chance of any sort of algae growth.
Early fall and late spring are when my water is crystal clear.

My Colorado lilies will in many times be very crinkled in the petals in the first blooms of the year coming out of very cool water.

Please see the attached pictures.

They represent a lack of caring and a level of neglect unseen in these parts before.
This looked like a new hybrid upon first glance as it was in a fertile seed bed with a few named lilies to continue to add new seed.
Upon further inspection, the "Authorities" determined that it was a N. Shirley Bryne.
"W.P.S.  {-)- Waterlily Protective Services" documented the cramped conditions this living being was forced to live in and then moved it to another location for the wellfare of the plant.
Please if you see this sort of neglect, call 1-800-SAVLILY to help protect the abused.

See the pics of a strange temporary mutation in a new hybrid of mine.
We hit a really cool spell for a week or so as these buds were developing.
Two flowers with double centers and the left one has a siamese bud to make it a triple.
I've seen this sort of thing a number of times but two at once on the same plant was a first for me.
Kind of cool. As you can see in the big flower that had developed a day or so ahead, it was normal and those since have been as well.

Hey Craig,
It might be orange if they got the right one.
Garet sent me pics of a Japanese one that looked orange.
He was collecting them for a while before he moved and had to relocate his collection.
As you know, he goes to Japan frequently so he had a lot of material from there.

Hi Mike,
I believe it was Virginia.
It looks right. I was taking that shot for the water effect so did not take any identifying shots before or after.
That was almost 4 months ago... man you are making me work the brain too early today.  :D

The white is an Anecphya, an Aussie lily.
If it starts out with light blue edges and then fades to white over successive days it is most likely Albert de Lestang.
