I was thinking of attending this- most of the homes are very close to me. The two in Grand Blanc are right around the corner. But, DH is booked up with clients all day the 14th, and I really don't want to go by myself.  :(

Leopard frogs do not get as large as bullfrogs, but they seem to be MUCH faster. In my experience they also are much easier startled. On the back forty here, the bullfrogs by the large drainage ditch/ waterway will just sit quietly as you walk up, and only jump in if you get too close. The leopard frogs, on the other hand, you rarely even see- all you will hear is a big splash as you get within a few yards of the water.

We have a wireless outdoor surveillance system we purchased at Sam's Club last year (with night vision). When we first installed it, I used to dump leftovers in the yard and point one of the cameras there. It was fun to watch which wildlife critters would show up after dark. (I quit because DH complained I was attracting vermin. Spoil-sport. ;D )
I was thinking this would be a good way to check out your your frog, but the quality of the video feed might be to poor to actually identify what kind of frog he is. Just a thought.

Pond Chat / Re: What kind of fish is this....

Looks more like a goldfish than koi, but hard to tell. Does it have barbs on it's mouth like the koi? I read somewhere koi and goldfish will hybrid, which makes an ugly fish that grows really fast- a hybrid maybe?

Hey, I wanted to be like timgod first!!  lol

I can't find any kiddie pools around here either, and I searched EVERYWHERE!    :swear:

Do you have a Tractor Supply Company (TSC) in your area, or a farm store that has livestock tubs and water tanks?

That's my next plan!!  :2thumbs:

PS- Don't bother with large rubbermaid type containers- the sides just bulge out and look like they are going to

explode when filled with water...

Pond Chat / Re: How many fish?
« on: July 10, 2007, 04:11:50 AM »
Welcome!

Grass shrimp seem like a great pond addition idea. Nice way to supplement the fish's diet!  ;)

Can't wait for pics of the pond! I'm pretty new to the forum also and I have since learned that my pond is

overstocked. I've given away a few large comets and a couple big shubunkins (each about 8 inches+), but I haven't

been able to part with any of my koi.  :'(  But, I'm planning a bigger pond and hoping to accomplish it before my koi

get too much bigger. Maybe if you discover you are going to be overstocked (I was trying to calculate, but I hate

math  ;D ) you could adopt out some of your other fish for the ones you really want. Or, do like the rest of us, and

just build more ponds!  lol

Also, wakins are goldfish, not koi, and they will not get as big as koi. I have a small one in a tank indoors that I am

waiting to put in the pond until he has grow a bit larger. He's one of my favorites.  :D

Pond Chat / Re: Can anyone identify this water snake?
« on: July 09, 2007, 01:59:56 PM »
After looking it up, it appears this was an Eastern Milksnake and the larger snakes in the water must have been Northern Water Snakes. ( Reference http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10370_12145_12201-61219--,00.html ) They really did look similar, but the adults were alot darker.

Pond Chat / Can anyone identify this water snake?
« on: July 09, 2007, 01:42:27 PM »
Over the weekend we went fishing and saw several LARGE snakes swimming in the water (okay, not anacondas, but at least 5 feet long). We found this baby in the grass near the water and snapped some pics before turning him loose. The markings were the same as the adults. All these years in Mi, and I have never seen a water snake before. Hmm.

Pond Chat / My first bloom (for real this time)
« on: July 09, 2007, 01:35:56 PM »
My Red flare bloomed on the night of July 4th, but I haven't had time to post pics til now. It was dusk so the pics didn't turn out so great with my cheap cam, but here she is. It was actually much more red, for some reason the pics look dark pink.

Very Nice Kim!  :2thumbs:

;D I almost forgot, BEAUTIFUL pic!!

(I AM going to get a nice camera one day!  :-\ )

I remember when I was a young kid,  early 1950's, my grandmother always called them snake doctors. It wasn't untill I started school that I was taught the correct name.  Anyone else ever heard them called that name before?

Yes! I remember my grandmother calling them snake doctors. She was the youngest of thirteen, from the backwoods of Shelby County, Ala. She also called them "pee-in-your-eyes"; I still wonder where both names came from.

My seeds arrived yesterday. Thank you so much LeeAnne! I'm going to do an internet search for planting instructions.  :)

80
Yes, I did mean for the summer. They are warm water fish and would def have to be brought in for the winter here. I wanted to put some in my lily pools, not in the pond with my koi and goldies.
 :)

I'm glad you asked this too; I had been wondering about depth. I also had a question about raising water temp for tropicals. Can you put an aquarium heater (with thermostat around 80* F) into a lilly pool to encourage them? It's been getting down to the 50's at night here frequently and it def seems to be slowing down my trops growth rate. Day temps have been averaging around 80*.

Pond Chat / Took a drive to The Pond Shop.
« on: July 04, 2007, 04:12:35 AM »
The DH, DKs and I took a drive on Sunday to The Pond Shop, in Milford, MI. I wanted to show DH a few ideas for building some new pond areas with landscaping. The place was okay, although nothing to write home about. The landscaping outside was nice, but the staff seemed clueless, IMHO (and I thought I was clueless). I asked one staff if they had any wakins; she said "no, but you should only put goldfish or koi in your pond anyway". I just smiled at her and said "okaaaay". Obviously the girl had no idea what a wakin was, and she seemed so confident of her silly self that I didn't want to burst her "I know everything" bubble. Another staff tried to convince me floating plants such as water lettuce "absolutely worked just as well as anacharis as an oxygenator". (I'm sure this was because they were out of anacharis and had plenty of water lettuce.) Not to mention prices were very expensive.
Anyway, all in all, it was a beautiful day for a road trip and we had a good time. Here's just a couple pics of some of the ponds there. My camera really does not do justice to the shots.

I'm so excited!  @O@ The Red Flare that Bonnie (bunny56lbc) sent me has a big bud that popped up out of the water today! I wonder how long before it opens? I think I read somewhere it's a night bloomer?

Has anyone kept small tropical fish such as guppies in small outdoor ponds or lilly pools? How about plecs?
