Pond Chat / So I went a little nuts....
« on: February 24, 2007, 06:07:38 PM »
and I installed my own Pond Cams. Now I can see it where I want when I want  O0 I was getting a little unnerved that my Lilies would bloom during the day and be closed up by the time I got home. I would almost never get to see them unless they lasted until the weekend. Here are a couple of snapshot views let me know what you think.

Thanks for the info I already have some hostas and they seem to do fairly well. This is northern florida and it does get cold (20's and 30's to mid 40's) so they do okay.

I appreciate letting me know that makes some sense now why some are doing better than others.

My "books a million" bookstore has/had several copies. I have already read mine several times. I stopped and picked up a copy for one member and sent it out to her ( she is going to reimburse me the cost and postage) because she was having difficulty finding it. Good stuff! Has everyone managed to get one? Andy

O0 Check this out!! the first bloom from the Wal Mart lily.... The tank is starting to crowd up with pads but I am still hopeful that the James Brydon and the Sioux start sending up blooms as well!

Wow lots of great suggestions, I think I have looked into most of these at one time or another but now I will revisit them one at a time.

Craig was right, anacharis is not on our list I had it confused with another plant, African elodea. What I don't want to happen is to  put in a fast growing plant that takes over the pond and I still cannot see down into it. Seems like everything is a trade off..... :-\

Well speaking of blooms we continue with our experiment.. ;) I have been watching the bloom that made it's way to the top. Colorado #1 was the first to send up a bloom and now Colorado #2 (plant #3) is about to.  Judging from the condition of that bloom it should open fully tomorrow or the next day.  Joyce it is lighter than the pictures of other Colorado's I have seen. but here it is:

So after reading another thread I decide that I am going to plant some hostas. Then I see the shear variety and  It is hard to tell which to plant. I planted 6 MinuteMan hostas that are a Medum white and Green Hosta around one of our tree I am going to plant some large Hostas in some other deep shade areas. Here is the Minuteman I planted. As a side note has anyone ever noticed that the Hosta root system appears more aquatic than terrestrial? :-\

Okay well thanks, :)  I was not fishing for that, But I was just curious if we had something in place that describes the process. If we don't and it is arbitrary that's fine too. Some boards base it on statistics, some use the boards statistics and other criteria... I was honestly just curious how we (meaning you and Jerry) did that on this board. Thanks, Andy

Here is another teachable moment..... My lemon mist hardy lilies out in the pond are still growing and they have flowers breaching the surface but they are not opening, Is it because it is to cold? (20-50 degrees) will they just drop to the bottom, no bloom? Teach me OBI WAN
Craig, Sean, Timgod, Joyce, Ester......somebody?

I used Garden soil. (not potting soil) it is a deep rich soil and you can purchase it at home depot. I mixed in the time released fertilizer for flowering plants ( I have 2 types, 1 is 10-10-10 and one is 17-17-17) Not sure which is better but both seem to work equally as well. Lastly I covered the soil with Aqua soil, it is a baked clay mix that is heavier than sand an keeps the soil from leaching out. Seems to work great. Hope this helps.

The Colorado #1 has sent a sepal (bud) to the surface (back left picture #1) looks like I will have a Lily bloom any Day now  :) hopefully my next picture is of a Colorado bloom! Joyce keep your fingers crossed ;)  the second picture is of the tank, every lily purchased from Wal-Mart and the offspring have grown quickly and seem to be healthy. Heck I got two James Brydons for the price of one, can't  complain about that!! I cannot wait to get them into the big pond where they will have room to stretch out. Which one needs to stay out of the direct afternoon sun? The Sioux or the JB? Thanks Andy

Anacharis is on the "thou shalt not list" but there is a native version that I may try. Also I planted some dwarf sag last year and it is starting to spread. It is a clay bottom pond I planted a short form of valisanaria in there as well but it is not doing as well as I had hoped. Want to keep the plants short if I can but I may not get away with that.

Well in case your wondering why I have gone quiet on this for the last few days it is because I am waiting to see what the bud on the 1st Colorado will look like that bud continued to move ever upward and as fast as it is moving it has me in anticipation...Like the song "
Anticipation, anticipation
Is makin' me late
Is keepin' me waitin'
 ::) ::) ::) ::)

The James Brydon cutting that I placed in a bowl in front of the Original (which I will affactionately call the JB2 Has really taken off I am pleasantly surprised that it is doing that well and is sending up shoots that quickly.

Lastly my Motherboard on my main Conputer died and I had to reorder another. Once it comes in I will have to rebuild my system.  That will not take me long and I will get more pictures up........ Andy

You know somehow I knew that :( I thought that I had read a different name for it  last month so I was unsure. Isn't the Colorado an odorata? I guess that is why it is such a strong grower.  I guess I was thinking along the lines of coming up with a red that is heat tolerant and that would require a native. I may be way off but thinking none the less.
Speaking of natives whic tropicals are native? Thanks Andy

One of you knowledgeable types tell me about it. What is the Proper name for it and what kind of Lily is it? I have 2 in my Pond (in baskets)
it is a great grower. Would this be a good lily to hybridize with? Why or why not??
Thanks!
Andy
