I thought that all the tubers might already be spoken for.  If you have any left please send me a pm so I can give you paypal info to send an invoice to.  Is it only for shipping Tink?  I don't recall the original posting on the total cost.

Chit Chat / Anyone go hiking in Washington State?
« on: March 16, 2009, 05:56:10 PM »
I will be visiting a couple of old friends who relocated to Washington State.  Was wondering if anyone ever went hiking the National Parks up there, particularly in the Olympic NP.  We plan on visiting that area and doing some weekend camping.  Also planning on visiting Mt Rainer and possibly the Cascades.

Sorry to hear the experiment didn't go well...I guess the Blink vivips I sent you didn't make it either then?  Oh, well.  I noticed the other day that some of the blink vivips that I neglected to do anything with this winter were still there outside floating around in my small pond/tubs.  They are pretty much the same size as before almost as if they were in dormancy.

Maybe you could send me just the leaves from your Queen of Siam instead, since none of the babies survived, and I'll just let it float around in my pond/tubs and see what they do?  Let me know....

Brenda,

Do you have any updated pics on your vivips from the winter experiment?

Pond Chat / why do racoons mess around in our ponds?
« on: March 14, 2009, 05:51:24 PM »
Okay, my best efforts of tagging my liles have been turned upside down all winter and even just yesterday by some animal (I am guessing racoon) that comes in the night.  Always goes to the same spot and tips all the pots over and rips out the tubers from their pots and leaves a big mess.  I don't think it is eating them as I don't find pieces of tuber laying around.  Once I found my thermometer carried halfway across the lawn and unceremoniously dumped minus the rubber plastic part that attaches to a fish tank.

Whatever it is it must have an opposable thumb (I think), how else can it carry things like thermometers and seashells across the lawn?  It always returns to the same spot even though all sides are accessible to whatever it is.

If it is a racoon why do they do this?

I am having some string algae like something terrible, if I get some small regular goldfish into my kiddie pool pond will they eat the annoying stuff?

Lawanna,

I just visited your tutorial for planting tubers on the tutorial board and discovered that the photos are no longer there.  Is there some way to put them back on?

Chit Chat / Re: poetry for money?

Hi guys,

Haven't checked my email etc in a while here.  I had been mourning the loss of my favorite feline that died around Thanksgiving, hence the poetry.  I seem to only be able to write when I am sad or depressed.  When I am happy I paint in oils.  Been sort of a recluse since November.  Anyways, thanks for your posts.  I too was scammed at that site.  I submitted an entry back in 1996 and bought the book with my poem in it somewhere amoung the swished in entries on a single page.  Then I fell for the recent scam where I was on page one for a book that was not titled the same as what they said it would be in.  Tried to call to ask about this and never got a human on the phone or even an answering machine for that matter.  Also fell for the photography contest too....at least I didn't buy anything from there.  I blacklisted their email address from my inbox as I was getting spammed constantly.

I have since found a more reliable source for my submissions...I will know if it gets published in an edition that gets published in 3 yrs, not sure when I am notified if it gets selected though.

How about Kitty Cat-spiracy?  That 4th cat under the blankets is funny.  From the faces it looks like maybe 2 males and one female?  Mystery cat under the blankets remains a mystery.  (Of course I already knew Ernie is a boy so I cheat a little).  Do you have a pic of the mystery cat...now I am curious.

Does anyone here write poetry or short stories?  And, if you do do you submit it for publishing or income?  Where would be a reputable source?

Chit Chat / Re: Chain letters? Advice from Snopes
« on: November 27, 2008, 06:45:52 AM »
Okay...I am very confused here.  What is SNOPES?  I do not understand what we are checking out on snopes.  Is that a website for something or a person?  I get the chain mail letters too from one friend in particular who is on someone else's list.  Then I was getting chain mail from someone on that list that was sending to her.  I don't even know that person...must be the send to all function or something.

Oh, and I really hate the SEND BACK TO ME mails too.  I do get the guilt trip though.

Mostly, I am concerned about getting a virus if I open it and that my friend may be sending it unwittingly.

Thank you everyone for your kind words...it helps to know that we were not alone in this.  (Although we sure felt alone when it happened...)  I miss him very much, and it is hardest in the morning when he use to do his little "morning greeting" routine.

Chit Chat / Senior Kitty passed away this evening....
« on: November 17, 2008, 09:09:00 PM »
Sadly, my beloved (and favorite cat) passed away this evening.  It was a very painful experience....he passed away in my arms.  The Vet said that he was closing shop and had to be somewhere so we could not bring him in for euthanasia when we realized that he was having a stroke or heart attack.  He was still breathing but unable to move or blink his eyes.  The vet said that we could bring him in the moring to put him to sleep.  No compassion at all.   I think he felt pain when he passed and there was nothing we could do but be helpless and in terror while he was crying out for help or in pain.  It was a truly horrible experience....

We will be burying him in the backyard tommorrow morning.  It is a very sad day, and has been a very bad year for us.   :'(

Chit Chat / Re: Senior Kitty may be dying from cancer
« on: November 15, 2008, 06:30:28 AM »
Thanks everyone for all your comments and concern.  I cannot tell if he is in any pain, he is pretty quiet these days.  He normally is a very vocal cat.  I started him on the ES Clear for cat cancer yesterday.  Will keep you posted if there are any positive results.

Chit Chat / Senior Kitty may be dying from cancer
« on: November 12, 2008, 06:09:03 AM »
Went to a couple of different vets to determine cause of rapid unexplained weight loss.  He is pretty frail now and resembles a walking skeleton with sunken eyes.  All his organ systems returned as normal in the bloodwork that was repeated 3 times over a period of 7 months.  No answers were found or treatment available other than to refer to a specialist who would primarily want to do either "exploratory surgery" to see if there was a tumor and where was it (especially if an ultrasound was done and didn't show anything).  Or to do surgery if they knew where it was.

He is so weak and frail that we worry he would not wake up from an "exploratory surgery", or be able to heal from it if he did.  We have to force feed him through a syringe now because he will not or cannot eat as much as he use to.  Although he wil lget up to drink water.  The two general practice vets believe that he has some sort of "lymphoma".  One said that he could be put on oral meds for that.  The other said it is not successful long term in an older cat, only a younger cat.  Senior Kitty is approx 9-10 yrs old.  We found him abandoned by someone in 2000. Vet said he estimated that he was one year old when we found him.

I am heartbroken to see him like this.  I bought this alternative feline herbal online.  I am hoping that it will at least improve his quality of life...still waiting for it in the mail.

raccoon.

cats and opossums aren't going to climb into a pond to poop in it.

Is this typical behavior?  It seems to defy logic in that why would an animal contaminate its water source?  I just don't get it...

Has anyone here tried growing Dutchman's pipe vine ?
I searched on Dave's garden website and learned that they can smell like rotten flesh, and the pattern kinda looks like varicose veins.  I saw a striking specimen adorning a wire fence at my local Leu Gardens and have been interested in this unusual plant for some time.  Ordered one plantling online from a private grower in Florida and am patiently waiting for it to grow.  I think the one I ordered was specifically labelled as "lemony smelling"...no rotting flesh odor here I hope.

A Turdle?

 lol lol lol

Esther- kinda looks like as you describe...pretty gross.  I don't think I'm gonna be putting my hand in that tub.  I'll wait until the tadpoles are grown and throw the whole thing out.

Pond Chat / Something pooped in my pond!
« on: November 02, 2008, 07:43:27 AM »
I can't believe it, but something pooped in my pond!  I have a few tubs out that have tadpoles living in them.  The water is clear until yesterday I wondered why one of them is yellowish brown and dirty.  So I look into it and it looks like there is something falling apart in the bottom of the tub that is an orange yellow color.  I suspect either poop or barf.  I figure it could be feral cats, possum, or racoon.  Its a pretty big clump of something down there.  I recently found one of my kiddie pools thrashed around too, so I suspect a racoon in the area even though its pretty urban and I've never seen one in my neighborhood.

Anyone know what type of animal will poop in a body of water?

I thought it would be neat if my "Halloween Kitty" (she is a calico with white bright orange and black) woud sit by the front door to great the children.  Or at least on the window sill.  No such luck...she and the other female cat took off in a flash and were not seen for the remainder of the night after the first door bell rang.  The older male cat just sat in his "throne" looking grumpy all evening.

LeeAnne- That does sound very labor intensive...don't know if that is something I could keep up with... :-\  But those sure are some nice potted specimens they sell at May Greenhouse.  I didn't know you could find the florist quality (disbudded and pinched) as potted plants for gifts like gift baskets.  Too bad they don't sell to the public, just "those in the trade".

That is weird...reminds me of a fish my brother had named Ferrel that one day started swimming upsidedown and backwards.  It did everything upside down, but lived for a number of years and got pretty big.  I think it was the last one to go, he couldn't bear to bury it and released it into the natural pond out back where he lived.  Don't know if it was still alive or not when he did it.  I think it was his favorite too.
