A five foot tall pile of Horse poop could only be made more beautiful if:
there was a bunch of straw mixed in in alternating levels.
It doesn't take much to make me happy but that is one
I REALLY miss my pick-up truck, no more picking up the horse poop
The wife wouldn't appreciate a load in the hatchback.

Chit Chat / Re: How would you handle this one
« on: August 08, 2009, 03:12:42 PM »
Well it finally came to a head... The final straw came last Wednesday.
I went out to do our weekly grocery shopping and upon returning, saw the neighbor
as I was backing my car into the drive and into the garage.
We made eye contact and basically acknowledged each other
no words were spoken.
I went in the house and put the food away. I went down
into the basement to log on the computer to check e-mail and get laundry started.
I hear a knock on our back door and knowing it was the neighbor decided to ignore it
Next my cell phone starts ringing and i check it and see it is the neighbor calling.
I am not in the mood to talk to them so I turn the "ringer " off and go back to my e-mail.
Next it's the front doorbell... ring...ring....ring....ring....then my cell again.....
now I'm getting upset and figure that there is no way I'm going up to answer the door
cause I am thinking that nothing good is gonna come from this
Next thing I hear is a voice INSIDE my house, they let themselves in and were looking for me
I scream up the stairs that I am down here and I am fine and I don't want company today so they left
Fast forward to the next day:  in the afternoon I am outside working in the garden and messing with the pond
when they come strolling over into my backyard with their beer cooler.
Before they could actually get on our property, I put up my hand as a stop sign and told them
I don't want any company today. They were still heading for the chairs by the pond when I said that I don't want anyone
in our yard today. They wanted to talk and I just said that I'm busy and REALLY want to be left alone
They acted like they were put out by my comments,
The good thing is they haven't really spoken to me since, and I haven't seen them in my yard at all.
It wasn't the way I wanted it to go,but
a new chapter in our lives has begun

Gone through 2 knee surgeries myself. First was 25 years ago and it took 4-6 weeks with physical therapy before I was back to work.
Last one was 2 years ago and I was walking on it less than a week later. Both were arthroscopic and the second one was actually a further tear of the first one. I don't have much cartilage left in my knee now but the one with 2 surgeries on it feels better than the other one.
 Good Luck Bullfrog
Hope you heal well and get back to normal soon

That sounds like a good size pile to me but we are lazy composters here... just fill the bin and leave it for a year or so
Nothing like a good pea ::) lol
a little #1 helps speed up the compost
The amount of cheese and grease on the top of a pizza box doesn't affect anything
I heard that you can compost other stuff (dairy and meat)...
but then you need to watch out for rats and other vermin so that isn't such a good idea

I wonder if it is actually a Monk Parakeet? They can survive cold winters and I know of at least 2 colonies living in the Chicago area. They build a humongous communal  nest of sticks and twigs. The one nest was actually a block from my old job and built "on" a telephone pole directly in front of the local Police station. No one would bother the nest that close to the cop shop. The other nest was even more famous as it was in front of then mayor of Chicago Harold Washington's house in the city.
Monk Parakeets are pretty large, bright green, and noisy too. They are from South America I believe and could easily survive in our zone 5 weather
And the movie Blind'Too mentioned is wonderful too

We have a couple of milkweeds in our yard...They are referred to as "swamp milkweed" or butterfly weed. There also is a "common milkweed" that grows in the ditches and edges of farmers fields around here

Pond Chat / Re: overwintering tropical waterlilies
« on: August 03, 2009, 01:03:24 PM »
Our garage is attached and unheated
It can get very cold here in the winter -20 or more
How cold can a tropical survive?
We keep our canned soda out there and on several occasions it has froze so i don't think
our garage will work.
How about same tub planted same way in the basement with grow light?
The temp down there will average 60 degrees or so in the winter

I know it is still August...but this our first full year with a pond and now we need to plan for overwintering our tropical plants
We don't have a greenhouse so whats the best method for overwintering tropicals in zone 5?

Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed,....but only on the very small baby plants, they eat the large plants but do not lay eggs on them
Milkweed in bloom is very sweet and attracts ants like crazy which in turn eat the monarch eggs. The monarch caterpillars eat the large flowering milkweed until they get a certain size and then find a place to hang in order to become the chrysalis. The life span of an adult monarch is about 2 weeks

The ones that migrate in the fall to Mexico are the last brood of the season and they are actually smaller then normal and thus better suited to migrate long distances. The monarchs that return in the spring are a new batch, born on their wintering grounds down south. On a pond tour last weekend, one of the homeowners was really into this and she showed us her conservatory where she raises monarchs to release in the wild.
She had them in every aspect of their life from eggs to caterpillars of all sizes to about a dozen chrysalises hanging from everywhere. In the wild monarch survival rate is about 10%. She averages 90%
Here is what I found most fascinating: She "tags the last brood of the year with a little sticker that goes on it's wing and keeps records of whether it is male or female then releases them to the wild.

Usually the feathers on the hen's neck extend further up to the head. Sometimes the hens can have beards too although it is rare

Chit Chat / Re: Can You Freeze Corn-on-the-Cob?
« on: August 01, 2009, 07:13:35 PM »
Blanching and then cold or even ice water is the key.
Do not freeze without blanching first, then on or off the cob is a
matter of personal preference. Blanching is only partially cooking;
that way, months later, you finish the cooking in the microwave

Tink:
The raccoons will let you know when they are ready
One morning you will go out to your grapevine and all the grapes will be missing cause the raccoons got to them first
Works the same way with sweet corn

Pond Chat / Re: What is the most you've paid for a water lily?
« on: July 30, 2009, 01:26:16 PM »
We have been lucky as the first lilies I actually purchased were here on this forum.
After waiting all winter and drooling over lilies in catalogs and on-line stores,
it was really refreshing to pay members here their asking prices
which were so far below what the garden centers around here ask that I am beyond grateful

couldn't agree more
the taller the better
gets hotter sooner than a pile thats all spread out
A little dried blood will speed up your operation too

Pond Chat / Re: has anybody had a normal summer....
« on: July 30, 2009, 01:00:01 PM »
the only good thing is not needing the air conditioner much
We didn't even put it on until almost the end of June
Still waiting for the first tomatoes to ripen
Mildew is rampant on our honeysuckles and phlox
Same black death as Tinkster described is on our larger patches of veronica
Did have a good spinach and snow pea harvest due to the cooler weather though

I rode a motorcycle for years and just like Bullfrog said:
Ride like every vehicle doesn't see you.
In fact once at an intersection, I made eye contact with the
4-wheeled driver and then watched as he turned right in front of me
even though I had the right-of-way.
Somethings never change

The fragrance is the key for me

Make sure that the tarp isn't allowing the pile to dry out too much
I am constantly amazed at how quickly our pile can dry out when it is really "cooking"
Do you have a thermometer to check the temp?
I have seen 170 degrees inside ours

you need equal parts of "brown" material too ...like dried leaves and even shredded newspaper...
we even compost carry out  pizza boxes that we get to add to the brown portion of our pile
