After those pics Sayer, I don't think I'll look at a dragonfly in quite the same way again!  What a whiskery face they have.  Awesome photos!   :)

Great pictures, Sayer! Can't say I will look at them as endearingly now that I've seen that second picture!  :o

That person must spend a fortune on fish! They don't look very small, as in feeder fish.

The Heron, aka, Birdzilla!

Mike S.
Spring Hill, FL

We call them pterodactyls here! Their wingspan is unbelievable!!!

We must have had a visit from one (or maybe the owl we hear loudly each night?) just a few days ago, because all of our fish are SPOOKED!!! :o They will no longer come up to the surface to eat, nor will they follow us around the pond when we walk outside the perimeter. :'(  It's been about 3 days now. I can't tell if any fish are missing, because they are all moving so fast to get away whenever we go near. Thankfully the 3 koi are still there, as are my favorite goldfish, but as for the others... only the shadow knows! :-\

Unlike a lot of people, I think any fish is a fish worth saving.  They are all beautiful to me.  Can't help who your parents were or how we turn out looking like..... 8)

My sentiments exactly! ;)

I, too, am so sorry this happened to your wonderful fish.  I know how it feels to have things dumped on you all at once, and hope you are able to have a good visit with your cousin. Right now that is what is more important, so try to concentrate on that one piece for the moment.

Pond Chat / Frog!
« on: June 07, 2011, 08:57:49 AM »
This frog is larger than the ones we usually see around the pond, and was just sitting on this flat rock at the edge of the pond last evening - he sat there for hours! He let me get up front and personal for some nice shots, so I took them from all sides.

Kathy ~ I, too, have been having problems uploading pictures from my husband's Canon. I used to have a "wizard" program that automatically uploaded the pictures from the camera. Now I have to open my editing program to be able to retrieve and edit them.  A PITA, but at least I can still see the pics online somewhere!

How old do these plants need to be before they flower? A friend from Texas sent me a piece of her Cereus 2 years ago. They were barely limping along, til I fed them with some Superthrive last month, and now they are finally putting out some new growth - slowly.

What should I be doing for these plants?

Terrestrial Gardening / WHAT am I???
« on: May 27, 2011, 06:26:58 AM »
Found this growing on the back side of the waterfall hill.
I didn't plant it there.
It looks vaguely familiar but I cannot put my finger on it.
Can't tell if it's friend or foe.

Anyone?!?

See how tall the flower spikes are? There are many more growing up from the leaves.

Carnivorous Plants... / Re: sarracenia Dana's Delight
« on: May 26, 2011, 07:06:12 AM »
I decided to keep them in their original small pots, as I was told that they like to be rootbound. Put them in a plastic bucket that my husband drilled some holes in the sides towards the bottom, so water would just be coming in at the bottom. Surrounded the pots with rocks and they seem to be doing fine.

Koi Corner / shy?
« on: May 15, 2011, 11:13:41 AM »
I got a new all white shimmery butterfly koi o(:-) on Thursday, from the better ponding store near here.  The young kid said it was a Gin Rin?  It is about 3-4 inches, and has very shiny scales - pearlescent, and looks very much like this one (sold on ebay, borrowed picture).

It is MUCH smaller than the other fish in the pond - I have thirteen 8 inch sarasa comets that are 2 years old, a 10 inch yellow koi also 2 years old, and another blue/silver koi that is 1 year old and about 6 inches.  The new fish seems to be terrified of the others and hides under a specific rock all the time, unless I gently move the pot that sits on top of that rock.

Will it eventually warm up to the others, or will this one stay in hiding pretty much all the time?  I feel so badly for it! :-\

Carnivorous Plants... / sarracenia Dana's Delight
« on: May 14, 2011, 01:43:52 PM »
My husband gifted me with 2 small sarracenia Dana's Delight plants for Mother's Day last Sunday. I've read up a bit, and plan to put them in larger pots so I can place them on the shelves in the pond with the water only reaching about 1/2 way up the pots. I will be potting them in 1/2 sand and 1/2 sphagnum peat moss.

I went back to the pond store where my husband bought them, but the owner was out on a job, and the 2 kids that were there, were brand spanking new there and not very knowledgable at all. The one helping me said to pot them up in regular soil (NO!), and to "just fertilize them with whatever you usually use on plants" (NO NO NO!!!).

Does anyone know if these plants spread at all? Right now they are in 3 inch pots and rather small.

Any other true growing tips would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with the others, it looks very different from my lizards tail.

I pot up my lizards tail the same way kat mentioned.

« on: April 05, 2011, 07:21:08 PM »
My Canon program has stopped working, but picture an egg on a haul out rock. No wonder my wive thought I planted it,
By the way, I uninstalled the progrm and reinstalled it Now it says there is an error.  I will try again.

I find this post very interesting - I have been using my husband's Canon Rebel for the past year or so, and about a month ago it, too, quite uploading pictures to my computer.  My husband reinstalled the program also, and I spent an hour on the phone with a Canon tech guy, but he was unable to help.

My son, who is an IT, came home for a visit last month and showed me another way to retrieve my photos, but it's a pain to do it that way.

Hope you are able to fix your problem easier, Jerry.

Pond Chat / Re: Gave away all my extra fish today
« on: April 05, 2011, 07:16:39 PM »
I agree with jax! I would be very glad for some babies, and I really like the comets that are mostly white with some spots of orange. 8)  I've had several small koi, but those seem to be the favorites of the blasted heron around here, so I am very greatful for any fish I can sustain in my pond.

I must admit that reading the first two posts threw me a bit  :o because I think some of those comets grow up to be lovely and very friendly fish. At least the 27 cent ones I hand picked at Petsmart 2 years ago (that are now about 6 inches long) are and they let me pet them, and swim circles around my legs when I am in the pond.

I'm glad that woman gave those fish a nice new home. O0

jax - be careful what you wish for - I love having frogs around my pond, but I gotta tell you... it gets VERY loud out there during mating season!!!  Not that I mind, I'm just sayin'... ::)
