Chit Chat / Re: Hummingbirds?
« on: March 17, 2007, 09:26:25 AM »
Barb, I think that they make Hummingbird feeders with something called a bee guard (?)..... I think it might have something to do with the length or shape of the opening in the feeder. The Hummingbirds can reach the food with their long tongues but the bees can't.

frloplady, hope your new fish continue to do well. Your quick thinking probably helped them out a lot. I think I would have been in a panic for sure.

Thanks everyone. I didn't even realize that they could be hardy here. They were forced bulbs that I received for Christmas. I think I will plant them outside. If they come back for Emm they should for me too. And Mikey I will not be braiding the leaves :).

Does anyone know how to save the bulbs to use next winter. I think mine have finished blooming. Do I just leave them until the leaves have turned brown then take them out of the pot cut off the leaves and store dry until next Dec. or so?

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Teresa, I may have to check out the pest control stores. Joyce, they may not be fire ants but they are small and red and when they bite it really hurts quite a bit. It leaves a red welt that will become itchy and it lasts for quite a few weeks. Andrew I have tried the boric acid mixture and it seems to attract a few. Maybe I have to keep renewing the solution more often. I don't know if they are very attracted to sweet substances though... I've seen them attacking earthworms... maybe they are "meateaters" :). Craig I'll see if "Award" or something similar is available here in Canada.

Terrestrial Gardening / Getting rid of ants!

This isn't exactly gardening but more pest related. I was looking forward to spring and the gardening season and then I remembered all the red ant nests in my gardenbeds and near the rocks around the pond. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how I can get rid of them or at least cut back on their numbers? I believe some call them fire ants.

Mikey, that looks a lot like our compost box that DH built. There never seems to be enough compost though, right?. You're lucky having the compost pile continue to work year round - mine is buried under a couple feet of snow.

Pond Construction & Filtration / Re: Getting ready to start my pond
« on: February 17, 2007, 05:02:32 PM »
I can't comment too much on the mechanics - just make sure your pump is adequate for the job and that the bottom of your pond slopes toward the drain. What I wanted to suggest is that you site your pond so that the waterfall can be viewed from the house, patio etc. - but you've probably thought of that already. Make sure you post lots of pics of the whole process :)

« on: February 17, 2007, 04:46:06 PM »
We just survived a winter storm that closed the schools for 2 days this week but today it was a degree above freezing .... is that a sign of spring?? :search:

I hope to work on hiding the biofilter at the back of my waterfall and tweaking the waterfall itself. It was redone last fall just before the weather turned cold and I had to stop playing with it. Can't wait :)
