My favorite nursery has a flagstone bridge supported by either rocks or blocks under water for their huge koi. I'm not sure how deep the pond or how high the bridge is, but I have seen really large koi disappear under it. I plan one of those for my pond. Honestly when you look at the pond, it just looks like it has a large flagstone on bottom, then you see the 'submarine' dive under...brilliant design, IMO

Thanks Howard for the insight. We're looking for around 1600 GPH for the planned pond. When we broke down my brother and sister in law's pond, we got a Vancs, but when I looked at it, I actually thought that it was a sump pump and would be too much of an energy hound. Maybe the Vancs is a good pump, IDK

Kat, what size is the hose on it? You might be able to add a length of hose with a plumbing  coupler and hose clamps. Jeff has added all kinds of hose to be used as attachments for the shop vac so that the vacuum can be far away from the pond in an area that I'd like to release the muck, using basic home depot plumbing supplies

Hi Howard, thanks for the input  I always felt that around three years was good for a fountain pump (600 gph), so had no idea that a bigger pump would last longer. What is your average life on a non-mag drive pump? Which brand do you like?

I couldn't decide whether this is the correct forum or if Pond Chat would be appropriate 

We are in the planning stage of construction on a ~1600 gallon, roughly oval pond with maximum head of 6' for the waterfall. I would prefer a submersible pump to keep all of the water inside the liner to minimize leak potential. Our head pond with the waterfall spill will be inside the liner because I just don't want to deal with waterfall leaks.

I looked at the Dealers section of the forum and there appear to be many choices and pricing is much lower than I had anticipated 

Can anyone please provide a recommendation on a brand that has been great for you?

This is a plant and goldie pond so no real needs for super filtration.

I can see where the wicking would be an issue  A mixture of rocks inter planted with plants would serve my purpose just as well.

I use an old PVC table over the grass. Easy on my back and the grass loves the nutrients. I just set up near the pond and hose it off when I'm done.

It's a little different here in Texas. We had 50 hours of instruction followed by the exam, then 50 hours of volunteer work to complete the certification. Then the yearly certification requires at least two additional classes (so easy because they are fun) and 50 hours of volunteer work plus the yearly dues. Cost for the initial program was only $110 and yearly dues are $150. I want to take the Master Naturalist classes soon, but can't work it into the schedule right now.

The exam scared me too, but almost everyone passed it the first time around and the ones who failed got another chance!

You will learn so much during the initial classes, plus if your Master Gardener group is like mine, there are monthly presentations at the meetings. It's so much fun to hang out with other gardeners too! I completed my certification in 07 and wouldn't trade the experience for anything!

I call those days 'accidents waiting to happen days'  Did you ever notice that some days are full of near misses and most of our commutes are just uneventful? Not sure that this makes sense to anyone else, but I really think it's related to planetary alignment
