Pond Chat / Re: Some Pictures :)

Very nice Howell!  Haven't seen you here in a while, glad to see your lilles are blooming...did you get new ones?  I remember you were having a hard time getting them shipped to Mexico. So are you home for the summer or still in college in the USA?

Great Pictures! How do you decide which seedling hybrids to pot up and let grow out to bloom?

That's pretty. Do you think it will continue to change as a couple more years go by?

Nice! My Gigantea is only now starting to sprout...but all my tropicals for the most part were slow to sprout this year.

It'll be open for sure before you go to work in the morning tommorrow?

Pretty!  I've got the orange daylilies from Kat.  I've only ever been able to get hers to grow and bloom for me.  Tried Oriental Star Gazer and Tiger Lilies, but they did not do well for me.  I think I had them in places that were too sunny and not watered enough.  Squirrels also like to dig the bulbs up and eat them :o  :o

I've seen nice displays of clumps of Bromelaids under oak trees or bamboo in Leus Gardens.  I've got the oak trees and bamboo now...just need to find the bromelaids.  I did not realize their leaves were that sharp that they cut you?

That's a lot of bananas!

Vickie, how long have those kiddie pools held up for you? Mine only lasted 2 yrs max and then everytime I tried to replace it the new one leaked! I am thinking they do not make them as good as they use to, or they are selling old stock.  The price of the kiddie pools went up too.

Harry,
Go to this thread link on one of the other forums that the grower has been discussing the Lotus Express.  It is a long thread but somewhere on page 2,   they discuss how to pot it up and plant it and other stuff.  :)

Pond Chat / Re: Locals cannot figure out how to pot water lilies
« on: July 07, 2012, 08:54:21 AM »
Wow, that makes me think that they do not do any yard work at all if they do not want to bother to learn.  There are people who do not have any type of garden whatsoever, just grass and trees so they probably never had to plant anything before.

A friend of mine refuses to do any gardening, her excuse being that she is afraid of spiders and all the other bug critters that can be found in soil.  I told her that  she could always use gloves.  So I was shocked to find out on FB that she was planting 13 rose bushes  :o at the house she rents (so she won't even be able to keep them when she moves, if she ever gets her own place.) Supposedly someone gave her the 13 rose bushes as a gift, she's been wanting a rose garden for years.

That's pretty impressive on the blooms with only a single fertilizer spike for the year. It is that Jobes tomato spike that others keep refering to?

Wow, I don't think I would even know what a spore looked like. That is pretty cool, I cannot imagine how small everything was to deal with and dissect in the beginning.

Interesting plant. It looks as if someone has splashed paint on it, haha. I guess the adaptation to lose its surface area is so that it retains moisture or something like that?

Aquatic and Terrestrial Plant Exchange / I have Aloe Vera for TRADE
« on: July 06, 2012, 03:38:09 AM »
I have Aloe Vera for TRADE in varying sizes, though I don't think the large ones are good for mailing...too large.  I really only want to keep a small number as I am not really into spiny/spiky plants...ouch...Is anyone interested in a TRADE? I am looking for hens and chicks (again, because I cannot seem to take a clue that they do not like me) and jade plants. I've not had success with jade plants either in the south so thinking might need to get one with roots started already.

I think this will be my final go looking for those plants and hope for the best.

Well the lantana and dwarf zinnias do not like it in the water and are pretty much dead. I am going to replant this one. I just made another one and am going to try one of the 2 calibrachoas I bought 2 days ago. Some places online say it doesn't like wet feet, but others say it cannot dry out completely between watering. It will be an experiment.

By the way, if anyone who is interested in making these has a JoAnn's craft store nearby, all the gardening items there are 70% off - I bought 6 of the coco liners for $1.50 each. They are a bit large for the 12 inch rings - largest size I can find so far, but I cut them in 2 spots and they fit perfectly. I also used coupons again for rings, bringing the total for this island (minus the plants and soil) to $4 since my husband already had a large container of the cable ties.

That's a sweet deal!  I have not been in a JoAnns fabrics/crafts in years. Did not know they would carry that stuff.  Thought I had seen some of the coco fiber pots and green rings in the floral dept in Wally World though.

Wow, they have a lot of hardies there this year.  When i went there several years back it was later in the season and the lotus were past their prime but their dried seedpods were very impressive.  At the time I had no idea that was what I was looking at but it was cool.  I remember seeing lots of blues and purples water lillies. Maybe they change their stock or add the tropicals a little later?

Wish I could go there again, I really enjoyed their Japanese water garden it was so peaceful that I forgot that it was in the middle of the city until I saw just the top part of a building nearby.
