Kat,

I got them this afternoon. I had to pot them up while dodging lightning bolts.
Thanks so much. I'll leave you some feedback.

You know you can't trust those lawn guys... or the bugs either.

The wife bought a water mint for the new bog.

I bought dill and 2 types of fennel for swallowtail to live on...

They had another plan.
I found about 10 on the water mint on the other side of the yard today and her water mint now looks like swiss cheese.

See Jen,
I told you kiddie pools work great for lilies.
There is also goldies in each but you can't see them unless you feed them or thin out the pads. LOL

Hubby likes his fish......I like my lily's.

GAjen, We are just the opposite here.
I'm the lily fanatic... obviously.
The wife's goldfish and later her koi. They keep her happy.
I just see them as taking space away from my lilies.  >:(-  LOL   o(:-)

I have a lot of goldies. Some are up to 7 inches long. They are healthy and happy.
I am overstocked by the guidelines but my water is clear and they make babies so they must feel at home.
I have'nt had any die that I know of in the last three years.
I lose plecos every year during the last hard cold snap but the goldies live on.
Most of ours are fancy fantails but we also have some comets.
One of the babies from 2 years ago is one of the biggest fish out there now. He is obviously something of a pig.

I would offer to send you some but the pool it is in is covered with that #@$*%! azolla.
You can never wash it all away as it can come back from microscopic spores.
I hate the stuff.
Evidently a bird or frog or something gave it to me as a present a few years ago.

I wouldn't want to infect a friend.
So far no one has come up with a way to kill it without taking out everything else.

You need to put it into your profile so I can find you when I need to.

Help me out huh.

That was my thought exactly.
I just took a few more pix of them. I don't know if any are any better.
I'll check them this evening when I move them to my computer.
They are pretty skittish. If I get within 8 feet they take off.

My wife actually wanted them and it has taken this long to get them to take. LOL

By the way I just took some shots of the Halloween Tango lily. Orange and Black.

I'll post them later this evening.

Time to work in the yard.

« on: May 30, 2007, 07:40:06 AM »
Yes Gary, I was going to say Sue's pic looked way too yellow for N.Texas Dawn.
It should be a pale yellow with peach tones.

Julles, N. Joey Tomocik will do great here in Houston. Just feed it heavily. Our heat and humidity will probably allow you to have blooms until December.

You definitely want to keep some sort of fish in there. Just my opinion.
Living in GA you have mosquitos.
Not the 2 lb bloodsuckers we have here in Texas but a pain just the same.

Fish of some sort will definitely please you and they will eat all of the unwanted guests that appear in the pond.

Lemon Bacopa is also called Bacopa caroliniana.
It has small blue flowers throughout the summer here.
That waterfall of plant you see in the picture was from a 4 inch pot that I transplanted into the pond. It probably took about 2 months to get that big.
The only downside is that it dislikes intense heat where it lays. Where it touched the landscape timbers I had to put fabric under it to keep it from cooking.
High 90's is normal here.

Well it's obviously not N. Woods Blue Goddess. The pads look a little like N. Lindsey Woods juvenile pads but still way darker.
Either way they are really cool looking.
I hope it's something spectacular for you.

Thanks SheilaJ.
Good luck with the callas. As I said above this is the 1st year in 3 years where I can say I have had any success.
The tango lilies come in red, orange, pale pink, yellow and the white you see above.
I really can't wait to see the red or orange as I prefer bold colors.

Gander,
Any idea what the lily was that produced the seed for that last almost totally burgundy pad?
It is really cool looking.
Feed the heck out of it and grow it out.
Let us see how it develops.

Jerry,
Have you got any bacopa?

It will spread out and get about 9" tall but it will also spread out and cascade over the edge like a waterfall.

This picture is from 3 years ago. It is still on one of my websites.
You can see the waterfall of bacopa on the left corner.
There is a lemon variety and a fuzzy variety.
The lemon smells good but the fuzzy one looks a little nicer.

Man does my yard look naked from what it looks like now.  :o

The last 2 shots are a little more exotic.

The first is called a climbing lily. It is a plant that is almost 6 feet tall.
When it opens, it is flat like a passiflora and it is green.
The second day it recurves and turns red.

The other picture is one of the Asiatic tango lilies.
I ordered a collection of assorted colors.
This one is the first to bloom. It is called Cappuccino.
Hopefully I will be able to post pics of the other colors in a few days.

I ordered a set of 4 summer blooming amaryllis. They arrived a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately 1 had already bloomed in transit and subsequently wilted.
I planted all four in a big container to see what 3 would bloom.

Collection included 4 bulbs:
1 Papillio
1 Elvas
1 Exotic Star
1 Santa Cruz
So far the Exotic Star, the striped one and the Elvas, the double white have bloomed.

The one I really want to see is the Papillio. With my luck it is the one I am going to have to wait another year to see.

Here are some new flowers that are blooming for the first time for me...
The first three shots are all calla lilies.
I have bought them 4 different times and they always disintegrated from root rot.
Last year I planted some from bulbs and got 1 flower.
This year I was encouraged so I planted some more varieties.
So far the pink one from last year came back and the other 2 are part of this years plantings.

Okay, I know I am nuts.... my wife keeps reminding me.

I have been chasing one of these guys around the yard for a week.
It would never land for me to get a shot.
It kept getting chased off by the regular blue dragonfly's.
Today however he brought friends.
I had 4 darting all around the yard harrassing the plain blue ones.
Finally one landed.
Man did I snap off a handful of shots.
This is the best.
It was early morning and the sun hit his wings so that certain scales reflected in the sunlight.   Perfect.
Check out the detail in the cropped shot of the wing.
